Carlton Barrett honored by Modern Drummer Magazine
And it's About Time!

From full-page review by Adam Budofsky of "Exodus" by Bob Marley and the
Wailers

Modern Drummer magazine, March 2003, page 148

"Theres a point in 'Natural Mystic,' the lead-off track of Exodus, where we
hear an almost sub-sonic bass drum note accent (on the 1, of course). It's a
subtle touch, no doubt, but an effective one, and a telling one......The band's
smash American crossover, Exodus features several classic cuts.....each of
which is brijmming with invention, soul, and big, open sonic spaces. Drummer
Carlton Barrett's beats are some of the most profound ever recorded. Steady,
playful, dramatic, teasing. Carly's licks of course cannot be separated from
the rest of the instruments here....Still, close inspection of Barrett's kit
playing is research worthy of a college degree...."

See here for Deluxe 2-disc edition of "Exodus" with live and alternate versions
-- at amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005Q5WC/qid=1044139138/sr
=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/103-3230165-1409459?v=glance&s=music

I haven't heard the extras yet (I just ordered the disc) but several are dub
style so I'm optimistic.

Best,
Joan

Wow....they actually did a story about a drummer huh? No wait...did Carlton
get a tattoo or a facial piercing?

I'm fucking dumbstruck.

Carly Barrett was clearly the most inventive and stylin' reggae drummer
ever. He is often imitated, but no-one has come close to his groove, style,
musicality and most of all, sound. Nothing taken away from Sly Dunbar, but
Carlton's playing remains the high water mark of Reggae drummers.

my 10 cents Canadian <2 cents US>

Hmmm, I'd argue that. It's easy to mix the music related to ska,
and I'd say that Lloyd Knibb is master. His grooves always complement
the music more smoothly than anything. Not to mention, it all started
with Lloyd and the Skatalites.

And none of that is to take away from Barrett. Knibb just wins in my
mind.

Have you ever seen photos of his kit in the studio?

Some people make jokes about drums that sound like pizza boxes... I swear,
they had pizza boxes duct taped to his toms.

Between Carlton and Ashton Barrett, the world may never again know such a
rhythm section. We'll never fully understand what they did, either, and no
producer in the universe will ever be able to recreate it.

Bob Marley was Bob Marley, and in many ways he was something more than
human, but.... he would have been nothing without Carlton and Ashton. May
the world someday recognize their genius.

much love and respect for Carlton Barrett...a man of obviously spiritual and
deep groove. a rastaman, an erbsman, a familyman.

You got that right. There are many great ska/reggae rhythm sections, but
when you heard those guys fire it up, it was and remains, unmistakable.

Are you talking about music? ;-)

LOL, yup.
Sadly, the preferred medication of Carly ended up being blow, and that is
what he died over. Another one bites the dust by a handgun...

Tell me about it. He was one of my greatest inspirations. Sometimes it's
better not to meet your heroes, in case they turn out to be coked-out
arse-holes...

I don't know about Carlton's substance habits, and haven't found any
reference to his having a coke problem via Google searching, so that may
not be true. His death was a gunshot murder by his wife and her lover.
Here's a reference for that:

On a more positive note, all fans of Carlton should get the Bob Marley
concert video "Live at the Rainbow" (available at amazon.com) -- this
showcases Carlton and all the band members at their very best. In fact
it's the greatest filmed concert of any genre I've ever seen -- perfect
sound, camera work (directed by Keef) and superb musicianship. "I Shot
the Sheriff" starts with a gorgeous dub style instrumental verse with
Carlton prominently featured. Guitarist Junior Marvin was outstanding
throughout. This was by far Marley's greatest lineup and may be the
band's alltime finest performance.

Best,
Joan

I met the guy, and saw him play 3 times. I also know guys from JA who worked
with him, and a fellow who tour managed one of the reggae all-star tours. No
question, Carly had substance problems. I know...I hate that part...
Nice search result, BTW, very informative. I'll look for that vid, I'm a
huge Barrett brothers fan. I've got lots of their early stuff on vinyl.
