Anybody play an original Radio King snare? I mean solid
shell 7" or 8" deep pre 50"s? Do they really sound great?
Just curious. I'm sorta gettin a hankerin' for one. Am I just
falling for hype?

I have two: a forties and a fifties. If you find a good one, they are like
nothing else in this world, BUT the majority of them suck; out of round,
worn out, not sensitive, etc. . The beds are deep and you don't get much
snare buzz which is cool but many of them aren't very sensitive because of
this. Very throaty, very big and fat sound. Great for rock and fatback, not
subtle enough for be bop. best one I ever heard was one that I heard Jeff
Porcaro play a lot.

Thanks, Geroge.
Do you have a clamshell strainer? Should I stay away from
them? They look cool. And I know about the handle breaking.

No need to stay away from them as Jim Petty produces repros. You can
find them at his website at www.jp2creations.com I believe that's the
site. He also makes a ton of other parts for vintage kits....Luddy,
Sling and Rogers parts, spurs, etc.

Gene: I've got a '39? Krupa model with the 3-point strainer and I used it
in the orchestra for years. I think it's only 6-7 deep. Now I occasionally
use it for big band stuff. Got it in '81 at the Salvation Army with Radio
King bass drum, original dual cowbells included, for $80. It was green duco
but I stripped it to the gorgeous maple years ago and just tung oiled it.
It's fat but still pops when tuned up and has stick chopper rims that give
it a vintage rimshot sound. I have another non-Radio King that seems to
have the same shell but different hoops (w/clips) and a lesser strainer.

I have a late 40's era Radio King. Trust me-go get one!
Its probably the real reason I have never bought a DUnnett!

i have 2. both 7", a mid 30's and a late 40's. actually, dan radin
has one and i kept the sweeter one. both came to me in rough shape so
they got reworked. new edges, beds, and strainers. kept the original
hoops though

from what i have heard with mine and others, the older ones are a
little more consistent as far as sounding great. if i were to get one,
i'd look for one in poor shape that you can get for a good price. the
50's ones are good too, brass sticksavers on them , most likely, but
avoid the clamshell. plug that hole and add a P86 or something .
