Tony Williams died February 22, 1997 of cardiac arrest, two days after
undergoing minor gall bladder surgery. Williams served as drummer for Miles
Davis from 1963-1969 and played with what was arguably Miles' best band,
along with Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock. He recorded
several fusion albums, and had two collections of his music released
recently - last year's The Best of Tony Williams (Blue Note) and this year's
Tony Williams Lifetime - Spectrum: The Anthology (Verve). His last studio
album was last year's Wilderness, which featured Hancock, Pat Metheny,
Michael Brecker, and Stanley Clarke. Williams is survived by his wife
Colleen, and his mother.

Dan,
"Wilderness" was recorded in '95. His last studio date was "Young At
Heart" - trio w/ Mulgrew & Ira Coleman and a great side. He was
starting to use a couple of little splash cymbals on it. I know his
wife, Coleen. She's a singer and I used to play gigs with her. Tony
had NO history of heart disease. This all happened very quickly.

A friend of mine - a bartender at the hotel - came to work last night,
felt weird and went home early. He'd had a heart attack. Luckily it was
mild and the doctors don't think there's much if any damage. No
previous heart problems with him either. You just never know.

The very first symptom in one out of three men with heart disease is sudden
death. That's why it's so important for anyone who thinks they might be
having symptoms to see a physician - you have a two out of three chance of
possibly avoiding an event such as Tony had.
Oops - back into civilian drummer mode.

Yes it is, Paul. But it's still good to let people know that disasters are
sometimes avoidable by not succumbing to denial.

I don't know, George - but if so, then it would stand to reason that it
contributed to his coronary artery disease and M.I. (heart attack) which was
the cause of his death, according to the news reports.

Myocardial Infarction?

Dr. Mark is that the correct term:)

That was the one term I always remembered from M T class.

Yeah, but lots of folks have heart attacks while putting to good use
that area. :-)
