We haven't done this in a long while, and it seems there are alot of newbies
lately. Those that can, or want to, let's hear where you are, age, length of
playing, current situation, and location.

Pete Pemberton, West Chester, Ohio (just north of Cincinnati), 36, drummer
and choir director at Cornerstone Church, percussionist with the West
Chester Symphony Orchestra (could use some help with this!!!), sharing the
jazz/rock drum chair with Blue Stone Ivory, a 9 piece horn band
www.bluestoneivory.com , part time drum teacher (three students),
manufacturer's rep, husband, dad, volunteer adult Scout leader, been playing
about 26 years, most styles, Gretsch and Ludwig Standard.

Pete,

I'm right in your backyard!

Jamie Wernsman, 40 (yikes), Lebanon, OH. Currently the drummer of the
King's Praise Band at King of King's Lutheran Church in Mason, OH. Also
playing with a Christian rock band (we're just getting started). I've been
playing off & on for about 28 years. Played a ton in the seventies,
eighties, and early nineties. Quit playing for about 8 years, and started
back up in 2000. I'm a Business Manager, husband, and dad (4.5 & 6.5). I
have a brand new Spaun kit, a little Ludwig Classic Birch kit with jazz
sizes, and a Roland Pro V Custom electronic kit. Been around RMMP for only
about 4 mos.

Me too! I just got a theremin a few weeks ago after wanting one for
years. I'm into doing experimental music on my 4-track and the theremin
gives it that really spooky sound.

I'm the standard-ass hobby drummer now. mid thirties. live near Toronto,
kids, house, blah blah blah. got a kit at twelve. Played through high
school and the fuck-fest that was college. Was offered a spot at a well
known music school in Toronto (Humber College) but studied business instead.
The crossroads of my career. This year I'll earn more than most musicians
(no, it's not a what's-your-income challenge) so I have lots to spend on
drums and other toys... but I've regretted my decision nearly every time I
think about it. No shit.

Seems that there are alot of church drummers around. A nice way to practice
and play regularly IMO. In these parts there isn't the same enthusiasm for
rock bands in churches so these gigs aren't really available. Besides, I
don't really go to church so there's a catch right there eh? I'm looking for
another bunch of has-been thirty or forty-somethings to play with. You
know, jams, the odd gig. Once you get the feel of playing with other warm
bodies it's hard to play along to recorded tracks.

I play on a Pearl/Sabian 5 (sometimes 7 piece) when I can and still have
some good chops but can't seem to get enough practice time. I love the
looks, the sounds, the chrome, everything about a drumset. Always have.

When I was in primary school I had a friend and we were both into drums. We
parted ways and I gave up drums and did the study thing and got my university
degree and now work in the computing field. Seven years ago a female friend
lent me her kit for a week when she found out I used to play. Well I got hooked
and when she wanted her kit back I went and bought my own. I'm now in two bands
(one cover and one original) and just love to play gigs for the fun of it. I
don't do it for the money and I'd quite happily play for free. When I do get
paid though, I *always* spend the money and something fun - never a bill.

Met up with my primary school friend a year ago. He'd became a professional
drummer, moved to the big smoke and played in front of some stadium sized
crowds. He's a shit hot drummer and is ten times as good as I'll ever be. I'm
totally envious of some of his experiences. He's now moved back to the quiet
lands and plays most nights at local pubs and clubs.

When we met up again and compared notes he looked at me and said:

"I wish I'd done it your way."

The grass is always greener...

Vince Waters, Hamilton Ontario Canada. 18 yrs old, have been playing for
about 6 years, on and off for 10 years, but have been focusing on
music/drumming for 4 years. I've only actually been in 3 or 4 bands, one
was good, and we never actually broke up, we just haven't had time to get
together to jam - our last jam was in May of 2001! I am in my schools
crappy jazz band (crappy because of our instructor, who, IMHO, should not be
aloud to teach anymore! But I wont get in to that right now) and I will be
playing drums/percussion for my schools semi(?)-annual major production.
This year we are doing Guys And Dolls, and I can't wait!!!
I currently play a shitty Trak kit with Remo Pins for batters, no resos on
my toms or bass drum (except the floor tom which has a clear amb.). A new
drum kit is in consideration, but I wont get one for a while coz I'm off to
College in Sept. (that is, if I'm accepted), so I'll have to pay big bucks
for that. But if I do get a new kit, I'll probably get Pearl, but when I
"make it big", I'll endorse in DW or Yamaha. All of my cymbals (except for
my ride) are Sabian AAX (one is an AAXplosion). I *~-=LOVE=-~* Prog. Rock!
Genesis & Rush are my fav. bands, but Dream Theater, Van Halen, KISS, Max
Webster, Supertramp, etc etc etc etc etc are all on my list of fav. bands
too.
Non-music stuff. I'm a computer nerd. I manage my own web site
(http://www.justdrums.net - as if you didn't already know!), and I have been
doing a LOT of networking lately, just messing around with some stuff on
some comps I set-up at school. My latest little project is setting up a DNS
server with Win2K - setting up groups, OUs, etc. I haven't gotten it
completely working yet, and I know it'll be a while before I do! I also
like to write little programs. My latest is a very basic program (written in
Visual Basics) which calculates the resistance and tolerance in a resistor,
going by the color bands the user selects (if anyone wants a copy, email
me). I'm also single - I never have been able to figure out why. Oh, I
LOVE Star Trek TNG! "Sir, I am NOT a merry man!" And though I am
technically Catholic (I was confirmed), I now consider myself to be
Agnostic.

Is that enuf??

Matt Myers, Kansas City, 26, playing 10 or so years.

I'm strictly a hobbyist drummer but currently I am playing 4-10 nights
a month with Copperpot, a jam rock/jazz band that's been together
close to a year; also not currently gigging but writing songs for a
second CD with 8 Miles Down, an acoustic rock band that usually gigs
regionally and has been together almost five years; also recording a
demo CD and working up some live stuff with Laura Pilcher, a local pop
singer/songwriter/keyboardist. As if that isn't enough, I'm working on
starting an irish folk/rock band too.

Right now my drums are a Pearl Forum kit that belongs to a guitarist
friend while I'm finishing up a Keller woodhoop kit. Cymbals (not
borrowed) are a modest assortment of Zildjian with one Wuhan. I strive
to do the most possible with the least amount of gear, so it's
doubtful I'll ever be able to justify five kits and 40 snares, though
I envy you gear hounds from afar.

I am a new dad and not so new husband and freelance sysadmin/network
engineer. I've been actively posting to RMMP off and on since 1997
under various non-anonymous aliases.

It's my real name. I live in Nazareth, PA. I'm 44, married for 17 years,
father of three boys, 12, 10, and 8. Also a scout leader. I've been
playing since I was 8. Started in my first band at 12 or so. Right now
play with three bands. Small Change is a five piece original jam band,
Blues 'til Sunrise a 4 piece blues and rock cover band, and I also sub with
a 9 piece horn band. I do 12 or so gigs a month. I also teach 2 students.
My day gig is part-time as an independent financial consultant and planner.

I have a 1980 Ludwig kit, a set of Pearl Birch Masters, and a Ludwig Accent

Gabe Kangas here. I'm 20, located about an hour north of Chicago... but
looking to move anywhere where I can find a job!! (I'm a out of work Unix
admin... you need my services? Please? :) I started drumming around grade
7, but I grew with my dad's drumming... so before I first picked up a stick
I think I was learning to play all along.

Recently I've gotten into the e-drums stuff. Just built my own set with
stuff I found on ebay, local drum shops, and online stores. They are tons
of fun :) I've found it to be a creative addition to have a variable set
like that... different sounds, effects, and even switching around what pads
are what sounds. It's really put some different life into my drumming
again. Not to mention it doesn't wake up the 'rents at 2am ;)

I have a small side project where I've been writing some small electronica
stuff and releasing it online. I think it's just a way to let myself
continue expanding creatively when not having a group to jam with. I've
played with jazz, top 40, and ska/punk groups, marched drum corps, and hope
to get together with a band again in the future.

I'm a RMMP newbie, and having a great time reading all of your posts!

Urologic surgeon by day / jazz drummer by night & weekends (occasionally
some R&B stuff, too). Gig with a quartet (mostly hard bop and straight
ahead, called "b.d.bop jazz project") comprised of piano, bass, sax and
drums.
Playing drums since age 14, essentially self-taught, but did study jazz
drums with Clyde "Batom" Lucas (Illinois Jacquet Big Band & Omar Hakim's
former teacher) intermittently for a number of years.
Terminal gear freak - prognosis dismal.
I play Gretsch drums (18.12.14.snare); although when stressed I've been
known to rock out on my Sonor Designers(22.10.12.14.snare).
Cymbals for the Gretsch's usually a combination of old K's, Spizzichino's

American series K's or UFIP Class Series.

Scott Logsdon, 40. Originally from Santa Monica, CA. Started toying
with drums in 1973 (still own that kit). I've have been playing pretty
much constantly since 1976 (you'd think I'd be better at it). Married
14 years to a wonderful woman who's very tolerant of my penchant for
Sonor drums, Apple computers, J.A. Henckels cutlery and my new
astronomy hobby. We have two children of the female persuasion, ages 10
and 12. One female cat, 4.

First gigged professionally in 1979 with stepfather. Played with him
around the country in hotel & motel lounges from Nevada to the
Carolinas to Alaska. Later, I worked in Country, Rock and Top 40 bands
through the 1980's. Currently working at the Greenbrier Hotel in White
Sulphur Springs, WV. Have been here since 1993.

Nope. I'm off on some different tracks this August. I've been on staff
for eight years, seven as an assistant director, and I'm looking at
doing a few other things this year. The State Fair Band is a wonderful
experience, and I've been very glad to be a part of it and contribute to
it, but some new opportunities are opening up. I do plan on visiting
for a day or two, and one never knows what could happen next year.

1.) Hopefully I'll be playing drumset/electronic percussion for the
Lyric Opera Cleveland production of John Adams "I Was Looking at the
Ceiling, and then I Saw the Sky," which runs through August 4, which is
camp rehearsal week and the opening couple of days of the fair. (the
new CBA was just neogtiated, so no one's been hired for the season,
yet.) LOC has been trying to put this production together for the last
two seasons. (If I'm playing, my beautiful Pearl drums will be in the
pit. :-b I guess I'll also have to dust off the MalletKAT.)

2.) I'm tentatively scheduled to be one of three or four faculty for a
week-long music experience camp for 8-13 year olds at Cuyahoga Community
College the week right after the opera. (August 5-9)

3.) THE BIG THING.
I'm going to Germany to participate in Nebjosa Jovan Zivkovic's
Marimba and Percussion Masterclass from August 21-26. I'll be spending
time preparing 30-45 minutes of recital material for my trip. I'm
hoping to do a couple of small preview recitals before I go. I'll also
be spending some extra time on the continent as well to see concerts,
meet people, taste some authentic fermented liquids, and do a little bit
of shopping for things that I need that are only available in Europe
(timpani felt, especially). I'm hoping to hit other cities in Germany
and Brussels to meet a fellow percussive acquaintence. I'm also looking
at visiting the Netherlands and maybe France. I'd also be interested in
playing a bit of pickup work, if it were possible.

That's the story, so far...

After a year or so of focusing on getting a small steel band off the
ground (gotta pay for that mortgage somehow), I'm getting back to my
main musical interest, mallets. Rest assured, when (hopefully "when"
and not "if") I get my vibes group in to some local clubs, I'll be
publicizing the gigs here on RMMP...

If "yooze guys" have a mailing list for the band, put me on it - if it's
an old-fashioned snail-mail list and not e-mail, I'll send you my
address offline.

Where near SM? My folks are in Mar Vista. Aunt & uncle in Brentwood,
cousins in WLA.

I go down in the basement every night to get to the cafeteria -
lovingly referred to as "Kitty's Litter Box."

I took the bunker tour last year when Dad came to visit his grandkids.
The freakin' thing is huge! If you see that the "Secret Passages"
episode is airing on the History Channel, take a look. It gives the
story in detail (along with hotel propoganda footage). BTW, it was a
bunker for Congress not the prez.
