It has been about 20 years since I have seen it (good lord did I just
say that?) but I still remember how funny it was.

West Side Story was really good, but Modern Drummer released a cut in one of
their issues that had an unreleased solo by Buddy that was played just for
the hell of it that the magazine reported blew away everyone who watched and
listened during the recording of the West Side Story sessions. I still have
it. It's pretty good.

The most remembered one is Channel One-because LIVE it had two solo's in
it--one overlooked solo but a harder one to do was off of Rich in London--song
is Time Being--a more technical solo to do

Definetly West Side Story and Channel One. Channel One is my favorite song on
the planet, and not entirely because of Buddy. The horns are great too!

How can there be a best??? There's sooo many great things about them all.

It's probably be allot quicker to list the not so favorite ones.....

I'd check out the tune Two O'clock jump he did with Harry James's Band. It
was on a France label. Perhaps someone here can help me out with the name
of the album. It's a musical and amazing thing.

hey;

i heard that buddy used to REALLY bust his chops in the night club-smaller
gig type situation; that these were some of his best solos. this was
because he knew that the place was full of musicians (drummers), and he
would do his darndest to blow the hair clean off of their bodies.
sounds like buddy eh?

Did you guy's realise that Animal was actually Ronnie Verrell. Ronnie is a
well loved drummer from way back and did all those early Tom Jones shows.
He was also the drummer with the Ted Heath Band in the 60's.
He's about 70 odd now crippled up but still gigging, saw him TV a few months
ago in the UK.

Check out 'Slides and Hides' recorded January 18, 1965 in Japan, with
Louis Bellson and George Kawaguchi's big band. The track is 28 minutes
long, and 22 of them are taken up with the exchanges between Louis and
Buddy. They work their way up to an extended solo each. Louis plays a
fantastic solo making the most of his dual bass drums. Then Buddy
comes back with a real virtuoso display much of it just on snare drum
punctuated by his single bass drum, but it's enough to make the hairs
stand up on the back of your neck.
It must be something like the solo he played at the Newport Jazz
Festival in July of that same year. He played last in a group of solos
by Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Louis (!!), and by his own account,
'did things that day I didn't know I was capable of playing. I mean, I
actually astonished myself!'
PS - if anyone knows of a bona fide recording of that session I would
be very interested in getting hold of a copy.
regards
Mike D.

Can't help you out on the Newport Solo, but that reminds me of another
recording I would like to get my hands on. My first drum teacher used
to loan me recordings - usually Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa stuff. One
record I recall (although I've forgotten the name) had a bunch of
great drummers playing with various bands. I think it had Chuck
Flores w/ Woody Herman. Bellson may have been on the album. There
was one tune that featured Irv Cottler, Don Lamond and I think Stan
Levey. Dave Black may have played a tune. As I remember, the
highlight of the album was Buddy doing a feature with (I think) Woody
Herman. It seems to me that the recording was on Capitol records and
the arranger might have been Billy May. I'm not sure how much of this
I'm remembering correctly. I do know Buddy smoked on that recording
and I've never seen the record since. The cover had a great picture
of a drummer shot from directly overhead. I think the picture was of
Buddy. If anybody has any info on that album I sure would like to
hear about it.

Thanks.

That Lp was called "Hi-Fi Drums." Buddy played the title track with
Woody's band although I have a Woody Herman Lp with the song titled
as "Drums in Hi-Fly." My favorite tune from it is "Gonna Tan Your
Hide" with Dave Black and Ellington's band. Black just wailed on that,
double bass kit and all. The song you're thinking of with 3 drummers
was Irv Cottler, Stan Levey and Alvin Stoller. That was called Tr-Fi
Drums. Billy May's band played behind that and "Brushed Off" with
Alvin Stoller. There was an Ep version as well as the Lp.

YES, that's the one! Did Chuck Flores also do a tune on that album,
or am I thinking of another LP? On the tune w/ 3 drummers, I remember
one ot them was using some really high pitched toms. It used to
remind me of that tiire commercial where they immitated rain falling
(a Tigerpaws commercial perhaps?). Anyway, as I said, I haven't heard
that album in about 35 years but it still sticks in my mind - a
classic drum album. Got any ideas where I might be able to pick up a
used copy or tape of it? Just wishful thinking I suppose.

Thanks for all the info. I've racked my brain about that album for
years.

Chuck Flores did two tunes on the album, both with Woody Herman: Skinned and
Skinned Again.

A great album and Dave Black *was* great. Buddy's solo though is a work of
art.

Yeah, he did a couple songs with Woody's band, Skinned and Skinned
Again.

You might want to email Joe at Euclid Records
(http://www.euclidrecords.com/). He carries an ungodly amount of
stuff. You can also go to http://gemm.com and do a search for the
album. They list several different dealers so there's a good chance
it'll show up. I think I've also seen it on eBay once or twice.
