Drummer for the original King Crimson lineup. Where is he now? I used to
just love his playing.

Jon,
Yeah I've got two of those, but I had never heard of the
Giles/Muir/Cunningham release. Is it any good? BTW, his brother Peter
was a hell of a bass player too. I spoke to McDonald in NYC just before
or slightly after he joined Foreigner. He was very proud of the
McDonald/Giles album. I have it on Cassette of all things. Was
originally on the Cotillion/Atlantic/Ampex label. I got it new for $3.64
when it came out. Man I'm old...back then albums were $2.98 (vinyl).

He did try out for one of the most recent versions of Crimson (a few years
ago) but was rejected in favor of Pat Mostelloto! Make up your own minds
about that!

I love Pat, I got to tour a little with him when the band I was in
opened for Mr. Mister on a few dates. They made us look like a garage
band. Anyway back to Giles. He was so inventive. Maybe the accent is on
WAS...also, they could have had old unfinished quarrels, ya know? I
think that Giles would have never worked out having to share the
drumming with Bruford though. Michael kind of had a cool overplaying
style. Pat is much better suited for the gig under those circumstances.

What was cool about Giles' recent 'audition' to rejoin Crimson was that he
showed up for his rehearsal with his cymbal stands all-extended, with all
the cymbals already mounted on the stands--talk about ease-of-setup. Fripp
and the other guys got a kick out of this! (He also does some cool
playing--in a little more subtle fashion than in Crimson--on Anthony
Phillips' Wise After The Event album (1978). Pretty good, sometimes mellow
album (though the 10-minute title track is a definite classic).

Don't know what became of him since the early '70s, but he's on
"McDonald & Giles" (Japan - Atlantic 18P2-2852),
Giles/Muir/Cunningham's "Ghost Dance" (UK, Piano-502), and of course
"Cheerful Insanity Of Giles, Giles & Fripp" (US/UK/Germany - Deram
820965)

Haven't heard it, I was just going by a catalog title listing the
artist as Giles, Michael/Muir/Cunnigham.

Indeed Michael Giles is an awesome drummer .But you know why he didn't make the
audition with Crimson? I do. Because Robert Fripp is a LITTLE BITCH. I cant
stand the little self righteous, arrogant, pompous pecker head! He doesn't
deserve Giles.
