Alternative to wing nut on cymbal stands?

I'm tired of dropping these things and having them fall onto the
cymbal, bounce onto the snare drum, then under the most remote location
of the bass drum. What's out there? Anything at the hardware store,
like some kind of clamp?

I use these things by Cannon. DIRT cheap!

Basically it's two plastic halves with O rings around them. They don't
grip super tight so if you like tight cymbals you need to add some
rubber bands around them. Also only seem to come in one thread so if
they don't fit yours you have to clamp them closed and tap them out
(they are plastic so no biggie).

The main benefit is not only no lost nuts but the MAJOR saving in time
setting up and breaking down. Squeeze, slide, release!

If you are in a more bucks than sense mode, there are some really nice
similar things called "slicknuts" or some such name. Cost an arm and
leg but are aluminum and VERY nice.

Personally I find the Cannon things work just fine if you can locate
some.

I use 1/4-20 well nuts on my Ludwig stands, but that won't work if you
are using anything metric.

Sonor makes a very similar product called cymbal clamps, came with my kit
and I've used them for the past 7 years no probs. Heres a link to what they
look like, don't know about the availability.

aggravation they've saved me. I know George is a big fan of the Camber

That would be Murphy's Law of Wingnuts: Any wingnut dropped at the drumset
will always fall under the bass drum or to another location that is
unreachable from the drum throne.

I think this is what he is talking about. They work great, but I did have
to wear them out a bit before they fit well on the larger cymbal holders.

Those slicknets are pricey. I can't see it. Of course when I'm crawling
around the kit, looking for the lost wing nut, I think differently. Even my
lady friend knows not to drop one, or get near me when I have. :)

I don't use anything to hold down the cymbals and I hit them pretty hard on
occasion and I have never had a cymbal fall off of the mount. I do use some
laytex tubing slid over the threads so that the felts don't fall off when I
pack up.

I don't know a whole lot about them. Cannon makes a whole bunch of
cheap imported drum pedals and parts. I found these at the local
guitar shop (of all places!) Were only a couple of bucks each! I keep
looking for them among Cannon stuff on the net ect. but nobody else
seems to stock them! Must be that guitar players get sick and tired of
the drummer cussing and swearing on his hands and knees looking for
wingnuts and he just hands him one of these!

I have 'em, and love 'em. Saves me a good 2 mins on breakdown time. They're
a little expensive but work great.

Do yourself a solid and also buy the remo Quick lock hi-hat clutch, too.

Those are good, but, the slicknuts allow your felt to be attached to the
slicknut. No worries about losing top felts anymore. They come off with the
slicknut and go back on the same way.

If you're replying to the barrel locks idea, then no, they don't move all
that much. I don't like my cymbals tight to the stand, so they hold the felt
on and give plenty of room for the movement of the cymbal.

If you don't mind looking a bit ghetto, go to wal-mart, big lots, dollar
general, etc., and look for those tiny little spring clamps.

http://mikedrums.com/cymbspringclamps.jpg

The sheet metal in the folds grab the threads perfectly, allowing for
tightening and loosening..... and they *do not* come off. I've even
hot-glued some cymbal felts to mine.

Some fit 6mm better and some 8mm better. In my case I found red went
with 8 and yellow with 6.

Talk about dirt cheap-- like 8 or 10 for a buck.

I have the slicknuts, too, and I have to say they are worth ever penny
if you're a working drummer. But my small clamps with some hot glued
felts come in a close second.

Certainly someone could outfit their whole kit with them, plus the price
of a hot glue gun, for less than the price of two slicknuts.

Maybe I should spring for a Slicknut just to see how they're put

They're quite an ingenious little device. It's one of those things you
inspect and say to yourself, "oh, is that all," but would never have
thought of on your own. :-)

I've been messing around with making some of the Sonor versions out of
hardwoods on the lathe. I remember, way back, seeing a "readers input"
blurb in Fine Woodworking in which some clever cabineteer made some
quick-set jig clamps by cutting some round handle knobs in half with an
acute angle on the top. He rubber-banded the bottom to hold the
nut-half together. When you squeeze the top, the nut separates to pull
off quickly. Not something for high tension, but great for just about
everything else.

If somebody writes an article about all the different types of cymbal
fastener tops with photos I'll post it on the Steve Gadd website.

I've used the Camber tops that George has, Zildjian tops which had a

I found a picture of something similar though this guy doesn't say

They don't move at all. You screw it down on to the threads of the cymbal
holder and leave it there forever, slip the cymbal over it by holding the
cymbal sideways. You don't take it off so there is nothing to lose. No
moving parts so nothing to break.
