Let me start by saying that that the gig went very well. Crowd was small
but very appreciative. They are used to hearing lame watered down
bullshit, so when went go out and did things like "Resolution," "Broadway
Blues," etc, they were very good sports. DDSD showed up early and tapped
me on the shoulder and I honestly did not recognize him. His hair is
longer than in pictures. We talked a little shop, but he seemed a bit
uneasy, but that may just be his personality. We were able to show off
battle scars to each other. He is in an ankle cast and a wrist cast. I
just had surgery on my wrist 2 weeks before the gig to remove a thing
called a fistula which I used to use to connect to the dialysis machine.
It was HUGE and scary looking and it is nice to have a normal arm again.
It was was only a skin deep cut even though it is a about 6" long. It did
not affect my playing at all. I hope that he did not expect to sit in as
this gig was a performance and seeing that it is a very contemporary
thing, I would only feel comfortable with someone who was well known for
that type of music. DDSD was much more normal in person than I expected.
He never said much about my playing, so I may have freaked him out with
my very crazy free type playing. Someone with a big band background would
be fairly out of touch with what we were doing. Having two saxes, bass
and drums allows myself and the soloist to get away with a lot more by
not having the keyboards or guitar filling up space. I love the sound
because there can be so much more openness. Shan was there and is a very
good guy. I cracked up though in his post about the gig when he referred
to the audience being older with an average age in their 30's! :-) I had
a great time as I played with guys that I have known for years and are
used to letting things go and be free but at the same time the time is
always internalized. The other very cool thing about paying with guys who
are open minded is that you can take chances and not do things
conventionally. On some tunes I used sticks, Hot Rods, brushes and
mallets! I love changing colors, especially on ballads. For the guys into
the tech side, here is the gear that I used. Main kit was Sonor Signature
Series with 18x16 bass 14x16 floor tom, 12x12 mounted like a floor and
10x10 tom. I was using my 6.5x14 steel Premier with the Yamaha Vintage
Wood hoops on top and bottom. (Thanks to Sean at Drummin Men who got the
bottom hoop to me that AM) Cymbals were a 22" early 90's Pre Aged Dry K,
my new 22" Constantinople K, 18 inch real Istanbul K with a chunk cut
out, a very ugly and trashy Beverly crash that I stand on to invert and
use as a china. It sounds better than ANY big company trash cymbal
because the metal is so terrible, 14" Paiste Sound Creation Dark Medium
Sound Edge hi hats and a 22" Wuhan wind gong. I carry regular Vater Super
Jazz sticks, a pair of Johnny Rabb ribbed 5As, for her pleasure, three
types of home made Hot Rods, Good old retractable Regal Tip metal
brushes, tympani mallets and a few thin dowels. Hopefully any of you that
are terribly offended by this post have your kill files up and running!
:-)
