I'm NEVER one to print what I can't personally confirm, but I've read on two
different forums that Dino Danelli suffered a heart attack and had open heart
surgery last week. Two unrelated sources said he is home "with a long recovery
ahead". Has anybody else heard anything?

Cuppajoe,

Please let us know if you learn anything further. Dino was my first big
drum hero. I'm originally from Jersey (& I admit it!) and was so proud that
the Rascals were from my home state. I don't remember which TV music show
they were on, but they were said to have been the first band on the show to
insist on playing live instead of lip syncing. That's integrity! Dino had
it all; great chops, great feel and great showmanship. I think the term
"blue eyed soul" was coined to describe the Rascals' sound.

Stu, here are a couple of messages now growing in numbers on two of the forums:

The message reads as follows:

i was at bridgewater country fair on sunday the 18th and dino wasnt there. gene
got very emotional and said the reason dino wasnt there is that he was having
open heart surgery thst day. later he said dino had had an angioplasty on
saturday but that he was home now and that it would be a long recovery. does
anyone out there know what really happened? ive heard so many contradictions
thats its hard to know what to believe! dino is a very special man and i
certainly hope he recovers completely from whatever happened to him. my prayers
are with him.

Thank you!

I heard that it is still very touch and go about Dino. He
is not out of the woods quite yet. He is home recovering st
ill, but I am not sure as to any more information.

This is devastating and all my thoughts and prayers are with
him.

I'm very sorry to hear this, and I hope that Dino will convalesce
uneventfully and then maybe do another interview for Modern Drummer and give
us some insight into his own barnd of magic.
Dino was a MAJOR inspiration of mine; I saw him MANY times with the Rascals
in NY (sometimes with Vanilla Fudge opening!!).

Once again, Jay Epstein - I'll never be able to thank you enough for that
birthday VHS you sent me of the Dino tapes!!!

Mark,
I only wish we had 600 hours of the guy or possibly we could jump into
my time-transcender jalopy & ride back to '67 to dig him. He's only
58. I'd heard he'd been playing gigs (with the 'New' Rascals) as
recently as last month.
