Yeah, I got all excited when I saw this CD at a CD Warehouse. I
listened to it, and then swiftly tossed it back on the rack. I will
tell ya though (as if you guys don't already know), Vinnie is the most
amazing/incredible drummer. I saw him with Allan Holdsworth -- before
I had even heard of him. I remember expressing to a friend there that
Ronnie Montrose's (opening act) drummer sounded good; my friend then
told me "You ain't seen nothin' yet, Vinnie Colaiuta is drumming with
Holdsworth". I was COMPLETLY blown away by him; it was like a
religious experience for me; and at that time I wasn't all that
interested in drums; I was there to see Holdsworth. I wish that that
show could have been recorded onto CD for me; it was an ideal venue
for him to display his talent -- along with other excellent musicians
(Jimmy Johnson was on bass). I have never heard him play like that
since.
As far as Bozzio, I happen to like Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop (this
brings back memories of the Beck/Vaughan tour -- Whew!)
Bozzio, Levin, Stevens - Black Light Syndrome is cool too; I just got
it.

I didn't even think about including Vinnie's solo CD on my first reply list
but I definitely would add it to the list. Not any sick grooves?
How about "I'm Tweaked", the first one? Jeezis! How much more SICK can
you GET!!? That is an INSANELY twisted time thing. And I'm personally
gonna nominate "Bruce Lee" as one of the top ten most intensely complex
fusion tracks of this century. That is an absolutely mind boggling track!
When I first got the CD, I didn't really get where he was coming from. I
was kind of expecting Zappa/Holdsworth style Vinnie shit. It's not like
that at all. But as I gave it more of a chance and listened carefully I
began to hear ALOT of stuff that is just amazing.

I've got almost everything worthwhile from Bozzio and Colaiuta... The
list could go on... and on....

I began transcribing the drum solo, but eventually gave up. Most of the
fills are pretty easy, though the unison part just before the drum solo
is a bit tricky. And here's the infamous beat displacement:

...and of course there is one last "displacement" on the downbeat of the
next measure to put everything back in place. It's not that hard to play
on its own, but it's a major bitch if you're trying to perform it live -
the other musicians usually end up following the displacements, or falling
out of time in their effort to avoid following the displacements.

For Terry try Missing Persons-Spring Session M. I've heard other recordings of
him, but I would have to say that one made the biggest impact on me.
Welcome to the church! ;) I was hooked too when first I heard Vinnie, got into
Holdsworth also. Bozzio is one amazing drummer too. I have had the privilegde to
see him perform solo on many occasions. Check out his two new cd's :
"Drawing the Circle" and "Chamber works". This last one is a cd with classic
compositions (played along with sequencer/samples) in the Stravinsky vein. If
you dig "Le sacre du printemps" or work from Edgar Varese you will like this
alot. I have heard that there is a chance that he will perform his chamber works
live! I wonder who the conductor will be Pierre Boulez ;) ? GET THIS CD AND OPEN
YOUR MIND!!!
