I have a set of New Beat 13" hi-hats and would like to purchase a set
of Quick Beats. What are the pros and cons to buying 14" vs. 13"?

13" is higher pitched. That's about it. Cons? Whichever one you buy,
you end up liking the other one more. That's about the only con I can
think of. :)

I have 13" A customs that I use with a small swing band. I have 14"
quick beats that I use with big bands and rock. I also have 14"new
beats, my first high hats bought in 1970, that are great for anything.

Tom Hall (th...@deltanet.com) spake thusly:

Actually I have both 13" and 14" newbeats and I sort of prefer the 13".
The 14" just somehow seem a little clunky and slower. Though the
difference is rather minor. And quick beats sound almost the same but
are a little faster due to the holes.

But the other side of the coin is that I have a set of Paiste dark crisps
and I'm thinking of trading for 14" hats. In that brand I find the 13"
to be just a little "light" or something. They just seem to lack a
"solid" sound somehow.

It's all opinion of course, but I think Zildjians sound best in 13" while
Paiste is better in 14". And try some K-Z combos too. I'm always
switching between the 13" K-Z and the 13" Newbeats, depending on what
sound is currently turning me on. I love em both.

I use a pair of 13" Sabian HH, EQ hihats. They are nice and crisp
sounding. Personally I prefer these above most of the 14" I tried. I
paid $230 new 4 yrs ago.

Actually, 14" UFIP Class Series hats are the same way. Very bright, with a
great hi-hat bark. I also own a pair of Zildjian 14" K Customs, and the
difference is like day and night. Hey...I get it! Day and night = Bright
and dark...oh, nevermind...stupid joke. :)

I got lucky a few days ago when i found a Meinl Dragon 14" crash. I bought
it right away without intending to use it as a crash, but as a new top h-h.
I use it now with a 14" A Custom bottom. One practice yesterday and i now
have the perfect hats that i have been looking for.

Before that, i had been using old (and trashy) 13" A Zils. I now have
a set of 13" A Zils for sale. I aslo have a really old A 13" to mix
and match with that to make for many great combos.

$130, ...any takers?

Some great hi-hat's to check our are Sabian AA or HH 13" fusion hats. The
bottom hat is very heavy which makes them very fast and crisp. They're
really versatile too, if I just switch sticks they can go from really cutty
to a more mellow sound. And for a cool effect, sometimes I put the bottom
hat on top and because it's so heavy, just hitting it by itself is like a
bell chime.

I agree. I chose to go with the 14" dark crisps (which I love) after
A/B testing them against the 13"'s. The one inch produced a big
difference in both sound *and* feel which I didn't really expect. In
any case, the point to make is that you should really play before you
buy, and to try as many alternatives as you can.

If your looking for some crisp hats try Paiste Sound Formula 13" Heavy
Hats. They are very versital and bright but with some body. The Signature
Heavy hats are nice also but have a softer sound and not as aggresive as
the Sound Formula. I've compared these to the Sabian Fusion hats and the
Paiste Sound Formula hats have more sustain, bark and chip better and can
get louder with out choking. See ya, Mike
