The guy on drums in the most recent vids is named Chris Coleman. I've
never run across his playing before.

Check the other vids there. The guy on the guitar, John Ziegler (whose
channel that is) just freaking smokes. Danny Carey is sitting in on
some of those vids too.

Yeah, he's enjoying himself but what's the deal? Do these guys get
paid by the note or something?

I'm sorry but speed alone isn't music. The track with the bass solo is
somewhat better, but pretty much these guys are NOT listening to each
other. Musical ideas do NOT seem to be flowing back and forth. Which
is too bad because at the talent and skill level of these guys if bass
and drums would just freakin' listen to each other they could blow the
roof off the joint!

Damn that's amazing. He's got that Billy Cobham tone but with more
randomness. I like that. a lot.

This one is even nicer. Man that is some great drumming. Paul
Chambers style technique. Burns like magnesium. He's got IDEAS.

Just another non talented smiling nigger high on crack--this is not music-it
is not a drum solo-it is a chimp going nuts--give it a banana.

remember those old wind up mechanical chimp bongo playing toys--at least
they didnt need bananas afterwards

You know the onlyway to get this ape to stop banging the drums? Have a white
woman stand in front of it.

Yeah, playing music that only other muscians enjoy ain't my cuppa tea. At a
jam session it's great, but I like gigs to be a little more about the
audience have fun. It's cool to show out a little here and there, maybe more
than a little if the audience is digging it.

I also like the concept of using the least number of notes to get the
musical idea across. The more notes you use the more likely it is that the
cloud of notes will obscure the idea. Unless the idea is to blow a bunch of
impressive chops to cover the fact that there is no idea behind it...

Here's one of him at a different gig:

Definitely some Billy Cobham influence in that guy. The guy has speed
to burn.

Genius, I say. Such originality. So flashy and so solid at the same
time. Very good tone. He even seems like a nice guy. What's not to
like?

Impressive chops. Nice tone. The most un-musical noise I've heard in a
long time!

I don't know about genius.....that is a term I reserve for, say, a
Jaco or a Jimi amongst very few others, but the guy is a natural for
sure. He's from Saginaw, Michigan. Hold your left hand up so it looks
like the mitten of Michigan. Saginaw is right where the crotch of your
thumb is.

Well I found another video of this Chris coleman guy--seems he does have
rythm and can play some normal beats--I guess he is like Schuh-to me just a
lot of noise-but a bit more energentic at it than Schuh ever could be

Un-musical? I think the ability to play in different time modes across
the bar is a very musical ability. This is a jam jazz group he is
playing with, and when he solos, what do you expect hime to play? Give
Indiscipline a listen by King Crimson/Bill Bruford and tell me that
isn't musical.

Agreed. "Indiscipline" is a similar situation, where the band plays a
repeating underlying motif and the drummer is given the freedom to do what he
will over the top. Bruford's performance is most musical indeed. I don't
really see it as a function of how many notes you play (Bruford uses FAR fewer
notes than this Chris Coleman guy does!) but it's what you do with the opportunity.

I was just listening to Bruford the other day on "Brother Of Mine" from
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe's first album, and I continue to be blown
away by how inventive he was (and still is, I'm sure). I can't help but wonder
what I would have done with that song if I had been in his shoes, but I know it
would have paled in comparison to his performance. The song is endlessly
peppered with things I wouldn't have thought of in a million years! I
particularly like what he does with the kick drum during the guitar solo right
after Anderson sings "This time!" Perfection!
