I'm traveling to Dallas on business soon and am hoping to hit some drum
shops while I'm there.

Any suggestions for either vintage or modern shops? Or both?

Thanks!

These are the majors, for which I am semi-aware. Perhaps, others
will add additional entries.

large amount of stuff; reasonable prices; decent but not fantastic discounts
to pro players. a large batch of parts and such..they just had a clearance
sale with some incredible prices, and if they didn't get rid of all of it, i
bet some of it will be very inexpensive right now..worth a look..

These are Guitar Centers. Say no more..probably the best deals, if you
cultivate a relationship with the sales folk.

I have seen more than one of the proprietors here be incredibly rude to
customers on various occasions, including cussing them out in front of other
customers and refusing to give a cash reciept. i was the guy who they
refused to give a cash receipt to, for a pair of sticks. I was ridiculed and
called "big spender" for asking for a receipt on a pair of sticks. i ended
up demanding and getting my money back, and never returned. If this were the
only music store in Dallas, I'd go to Waco.

absolutely lame for drummers..nothing there..

This is the only place with many vintage drums. Dave has hundreds and
hundreds of used drums, but you can not usually buy them, because he's never
there to give it a yes or no, and if he IS There, he's usually wishy washy
about how much he'd take etc. I think he'd rather hold on to all of them.
There's a lot of junk too. Still, it's probably worth a few minutes to wade
through the stacks of stuff. Old pre-CBS Rogers drums, a tangerine sparkle
round badge Gretsch kit which he'll probably never sell, probably buried by
now under other used kits. Go have a look, if you're hanging in Dallas..i
got my 5" brass supra phonic here, by trading in another 6"
supraphonic..even trade..

As far as other spots, Voyager's Dream in Denton has a lot of interesting
ethnic stuff, and i recently heard of a used drum shop opening up in
carollton, but i cannot find the business card someone gave me..if i find
it, i'll post it here..

Thanks for the review Eric, probably the most important part....

"And I was just thinking of a ride to Lone Star Percussion to
check it out - probably not now!!!"

Kinda' reminds me of the old B & S percussion on Oak Lawn,
in the 70's. "Bill & Sandy" were great great people, but Bill could
be a little "salty" at times. I recall one of my trips there to get some
2Bs(yeah, I was just young and stupid). As soon as I asked Bill
for the field sticks, and knowing from my other visits that I was
only involved in hobby play, Bill proclaimed:

"Got a parade"?

Me, Bill, and the friend with me all had a good laugh. But I know
Bill would have never cussed at anybody or argued over a cash
receipt.

There's also a place in Glenn Heights(aka Red Oak) but the OP
said Dallas, so I wasn't going to include it. I've never been there,
but have sat in on jams in Dallas using the instructors kit. Here's
the information.

Guitar Focus
Larry Daniel - Instructor
111 W. Ovilla Road
Glenn Heights, Texas 75115
972-223-0133

Larry is really a great guy. He's just a country type with a very dry
sense of humor. Give him a call sometime, he's a hoot.

Thanks - Gary Walker

They don't encourage browsing. Everything is behind the counter in the
warehouse, and you tell them what you want , nd they go and get it..no
testing anything..

=============

yeah, i loved bill & sis. B&S was a truly classic drum shop. I bought my
sonor phonics from bill in about, oh 78, i guess..he gave me sh*t about
asking for an extra discount, then turned around with a grin and sold me the
drums at a price where he probably made very little, if anything..

That's where I met (conguero)A. D. Washington and (drum repair and
refurbishing wizard)Jim Shelley..I miss Jim Shelley; what a genius he was
regarding drum repair. i asked nuckols about him and heard only that he's in
west virginia somewhere. If anyone has a line on him, PLEASE send me his
contact info..

I was in a conversation recently with someone? where B&S came
up. My conversation partner? said that he believed that Sandy had
died, and Bill was in some other state, can't recall where.

Remember how they had that little red Dachshund on "gaurd" in the
store?

I loved Bill and Sis's drum shop. I bought a set of Phonics there too ,
Eric. Sis's family owned AmRawCo, the drumhead company. Bill wasn't even a
drummer. I marched in the B&S Drum Line and Beer Brigade and Bill played
bass drum.
