I got this drum off e-Bay a couple of weeks ago. It's a Radio King shell
that was customized for Ted Nugent's drummer Cliff Davis in 1978. It is
signed by Foley and Jamieson ("custom built by Paul Jamieson"). I can't
figure out who did what. It was definitely custom painted and has a Rogers
strainer. I can't imagine what "custom built" means. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
Fred Mann

Pat Foley did paint work for Tama, DW, and most recently Slingerland.

Paul would get drums and Pat did all the work on them. Paul would then put
his name on it as if he did all the work.
For the record, Pat Foley is much more than a paint person, he did do custom
work but NOT for Tama or DW. He was in charge of Slingerland for a short
time. H emight have done custom paint on a Tama or DW, Bill Detamore used to
work for DW doing their custom paint. Then he left to start his own company.

Paul Jamison was and still maybe a drum tech, he came to the fore front
handling Jeff Porcaro's drums, he has done snares for many people including
Steve Smith.

Pat's a friend of mine, he now lives in England working for Gibson in
artist relations.
He pretty much started the custom drum business, hand cutting bearing
edges before anyone cared about that sort of thing, I own a drum set
he made for me and a couple of snares as well.
He made custom drums for Don Henley, Jonathan Moffet and pretty much
every professional drummer in LA.
Later he worked for DW for a short period of time when they wanted to
build custom drums with custom paint jobs.
When Slingerland was revived he ran the whole business hand making the
top end drums from paint jobs to hand cutting bearing edges and was
the sole guy making the Radio King reissue snare.
The drums were great, but DW had too much leverage in the market and
started putting pressure on dealers that carried the new Slingerland
drums.
Gibson said screw it and decided to dump the whole Slingerland
project, but if you ever see one of the Slingerland kits he made, they
were beautiful and far better than the DW kits.

I'd have to argue that Joe Cusatis was the first custom drum builder. In New
York at his Modern Drum Shop in the late sixties.

I bought one of Paul and Pat's drums in the late seventies when I live in
L.A. Nice Radio King that had been tweaked. Like an idiot I sold it. I
replaced it a couple of years ago with another that I had Sam Bacco paint
for me.

DW did not have anything to do with Slingerland's demise. What ruined
Gibson/Slingerland was two things: The owner's poor business tactics and his
personal life (a nasty divorce) and the fact that they were just charging
way too much money for Slingerland drums. They did themselves in. I watched
dealers who wanted to carry the line just have to laugh at the prices that
they were charging. Slingerland is not the only brand name that he bought
and ruined. Gibson has much more money and "leverage" than DW.

Don't forget Sam Bacco. It was actually Pat AND Sam who were both doing the
custom work for Mapex and Slingerland.

Pat Foley (not Bill Detamore) painted my Cherry Sunburst DW kit...circa 1987
when he worked for them.

Paul Jamieson was one of Jeff Porcaro's Drum Techs and helped design The Pearl,
Jeff Porcaro/Paul Jamison Drum Rack, Great cat, in fact I spoke with Him
tonight (5/6). He's doing my cartage for Greg Kilgore show on May 21nd and The
American Country Music Awards May 22nd and 23rd. I was pretty pumped when Dinah
Gretsch told Me that's who they make arrangments with when endrosers need gear
on the West Coast. I have about 1500 questions to ask Him about JP and His
gear. I thinking it's gonna be a majorly cool Hang.

Pat Foley was head of Artist relations when I signed on for My "Brief" stint
with Slingerland. I got 2 kits that Sam Bacco and Pat personally built. Not
trying to sound full of myself or brag here but they are amazing kits. Too bad
to see such a great idea then product get flushed down the toilet. Like George
posted, Henry at Gibson was CLUELESS on how to run a drum company. He was
responsible for running that good thing in the ground.

Thanks for all the replies!
So is it likely that the bearing edges were recut? If so, how can I tell?
I'm just curious.
If you want to see the drum follow this link:

I realize this post is over 10 years old but I just acquired one of these custom snares. Mine is obviously a 6 ply Gretsch snare that has been modified with a Rogers strainer and butt plate. Edges also appear to have been re-cut to a much sharper edge. My drum says Custom Built for John Siomos by Paul Jamison. If the name doesn't ring a bell he was Peter Frampton's drummer in the 70's including the smash album Frampton Comes Alive. At the bottom of the badge/plate it has the years 12-76 and #003. Doing a google search on Paul Jamieson led me to this posting.

Friend was a former rep for Slingerland and Mapex. Their downfall wasn't DW, but trying to make a dealer buy everything Gibson had to offer, in order to stock Slingerland. A $2k slingerland kit wasn't as attractive as a $3k DW to a lot of dealers

Does Paul still do custom snares. If he does how would I get ahold of him.
