Hey guys,
While I was at the Kidrock show in Louisville this past weekend, I had
an opportunity to talk with Fred Young of The Kentucky Headhunters.
This guy has to be one of the nicest guys I've ever met. We talked
for quite a while in the hallway during the show. He was showing me
some stuff to try, asked me about MY drumming history, and told some
funny "on the road stories". The Headhunters have always been my
favorite country band so it was a thrill to talk with him. Great
band...I love that crunchy guitar on "Walk softly on This Heart of
mine"!

You won't meet a nicer guy than Fred Young anywhere. Greg Martin, the guitar
player with the Heads is a friend of mine, and I have hung out with Fred on
more than a few occasions. I don't know how he does it, but Fred gets an
unbelievable sound from that drum kit. The Heads live show is like the old
classic rock days where the band just leaves the stage for about 15-20 min. and
they turn Fred loose. It's a wild experience to say the least.
Here's a couple of pics of Fred's kit.

Fred is definitely one of a kind, there's no question about that...

I may be playing some opening dates for The Kentucky Headhunters this
summer. I hope I get a chance to meet Fred.

I know, wild, huh? I think they were going to hang out with Kidrock
backstage from the way he was talking. He did say he was playing that
same old Frankenstein kit, by the way...amazing!

That's a cool kit.

What does it sound like? I presume it's getting triggered when all is said
and done.

I really like the stand on the floor tom. I think I like it better than
those spindly legs we've gotten for the past 30 years.

No, Fred's drum kit is not triggered at all. Fred and the Ky. Heads are
definitely "old school" when it comes to their stage sound. Fred's drums sound
really great out front. But I guess you have to take into consideration they
always play thru a huge p.a. and drums are miked with really good mikes, AKG
D112 on kicks, Sennheiser 421's, etc.

It's a mixture. He has old Leedy, WFL's, etc. The bass drums are old marching
bass drums. The toms are old marching snares.
