Last night I saw a Jazz Trio featuring a excellent local drummer. His
cymbal sound was similar to what I have been looking for. I spoke with
him during the break and found out he was usung Bosphorus cymbals.
They were the master series. He did mention that he also uses the
traditional series in other gigs. The best way I can describe the
sound was that it reminded me of the sound Leon Parker has. Any
recomendations regarding the Bosphorus line for Jazz trio's and Jazz
standard bands featuring several horns would be appreciated.

the bosphorus ferit antique series are fantastic. the 18" bosphorus ferit
antique jazz crash-ride is a wonderful cymbal. i also have to reccommend
checking out ISTANBUL MEHMET cymbals, whom i am lucky enough to have an
endorsement with! the heritage (mel lewis) series, and the nostalga series
are incredible. i also like their sultan line (same lathing pattern as the
bosphorus ferit antique). your more than welcome to come over and hear mine
(if you live near ohio)! i also have some bosphorus cymbals from my
pre-istanbul days.

All Bosphorus lines that I have heard offer nice cymbals. Find a dealer
in your area where you can check some out, although you may get better
deals on ebay.
Sounds to me like the Masters will be what you are looking for.

This guy is obviously biased. Bosphorus is making FAR superior cymbals to

offense to JR, but it is fact.

Yea, I agree. Drummers World in NYC has both brands and the Bosphorous
stuff definitely sounds better to me. If you get them free, well then
good for you :-), but if you gotta pay, buy the Bosphorous Masters or
a nice thin Ferit ride.

Rob,
Hey, I'm a Bos endorser, & I don't feel that my feelings about their
cymbals is compromised. Of course, it just so happens that they are
making the thinnest pies on the planet now, which is what I really
gravitate toward!

Jeff,
You should seek out some Bos to tap on. Their dealers are at
http://www.bosphoruscymbal.com/
In general, the Masters are thinner than the Trads and have more
wash, smaller bells, and aren't as loud. They make THE most
delicious flats of all time, which as you know are really perfect in
acoustic piano trio situations. Leon usually (at least with Jacky
Terrason) plays an 18 Sabian Flat - I believe an HH. I used to own
one of those, but much prefer a Bos - it's not as dry as the Sabian.
For those moments with horns, I often use a 22" Bos Trad which has
more carrying power than my Masters.

J.R,
By the way, I do have a fantastic 21" Mel Lewis Istanbul Agop, but
only after a LOT of trading and comparing - honestly, the best of
EIGHT 21" Mels. I was at the Istanbul factory a few years ago, and
have gotten rid of most of what I bought there in favor of Bos or
Spizz.

hey rob,

trust me...the heritage series (mel lewis) cymbals are DEFIENTLY thin enough
and are killer to boot!. flatter profile, a smaller bell, and low gram
weight...14" hats, 19" crash/ride, 21" ride w/2 rivets...i never thought i'd
take to the 21" (i'm a dedicated 20" ride guy) but it's amazing! the
nostalga series cymbals are in a desireable thickness range for acoustic
playing to moderately amplified situations. besides that u are right. the
line is thicker and heavier. the sultans are thicker and far heavier than
the bosphorus ferit antiques, and i do prefer the bosphorus ferit antiques
to the sultans, i do admit...how's that for honesty? JR

ps...i'll be posting this as well on the newsgroup

Rob,

Just how is he "obviously biased"? Did it occur to you that he might
have pursued his endorsement because he actually liked the product? If
I had a Sonor endorsement, would it somehow "taint" my enjoyment of and
enthusiasm for their drums? I know it's hard to imagine, but just
suppose for a moment everyone doesn't have the same tastes you do.

I don't care for thin ride cymbals myself. I played a set of the Mel
Lewis Signature Series Istanbuls for a few nights. Agops I think. I
found the ride too thin for my taste, but the 16" thin crash and 14"
hats were a dream. I'd have bought them then and there but the moron
who owns the store wants to get RETAIL++ for them. $425 for a 20" ride?
Not a chance. They'll be hanging on his wall for quite some time.

rob, weren't you an endorser before/are still?

i agree that SOME endorsers could
be lying about the quality of the product because they get it for free. but i'm
sure
that there are plenty of endorsers out there that absolutely love the things they

endorse and would probably play them even if they didn't get them cheap/free.
i think you forgot about those folks.

sorry, i've never played istanbul or bosphorus cymbals mainly because next to
nobody carries them and if they do, its only a select few or the more "poppy"
sounding cymbals.

joe.
