21" K Constantinople Big Band Ride:
Well, duh, this was the whole reason I was there! They had 24 in
stock, I only needed to hear about eight to find mine (I could have kept
going, but it would have been pointless, I knew it was "The One"). There
were two that were really quite wonderful, the stick sound is that dark
click (almost like a nice flat ride or the original DeJohnette series or the
really dry K Custom Dry rides - anyway), but it had volume that that type of
stick sound doesn't usually have. The articulation was unbelievable, but not
at all like a dry ride. There was spread (more on mine in a minute), but the
wash was always controlled. The bells were all excellent, quite cutting
without being clang-y. Now, for mine specifically: WOW The one I found is
drier than the others, almost like there was a weird hammer hit somewhere or
something, it had some wash, but the wash just faded so much quicker than
the others. So, it has the body, and opens up nicely when crashed, but then
gets right out of the way. And the stick sound, well, I think I picked one
of the darkest (I think the darkest one was a little washy, although that's
relative, because none were particularly washy), and the stick click was
amazing, I could not lose it under the spread, but at the same time, there
was body and presence beneath the stick impact sound (and it was that pretty
wash, not a yucky "-innnnnggggggggg" that you get with a real heavy ride). I
think I have found the "George Larson Ride" - finally. (Although what
happens next month when I start playing with that hypothetical thrash band?
Oh well, damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead). I hope everyone checks these
out if you have the chance, they're wonderful!!!!!!
21" Avedis Sweet Ride:
What the hell do you need this for if the K Con. is perfect?
Well, this was a bow to owning at least some versatility. I've liked the
Sweet rides that I've heard, so I knew I wanted to pick one up, and I'll
have no better opportunity. The one I picked has a nice stick sound (there's
a surprise, can anyone guess my main priority with rides?), it was brighter
than the K Con., but nowhere near the brightness of a Ping ride. It was
washier than the K's, but not tons, and the wash stayed polite and
controllable at all times, and it crashes too. What a great, versatile ride.
I feel like the Sweet will be great when I need a little more volume than
the Big Band Ride, but don't want to break out the Rock Ride or (God forbid)
the Mega-Bell Ride. Oh, by the way, the bells on the Sweets were all great
as well, I don't know if it's the best choice for a strictly Latin gig, but
it can cover the all the bases, cutting without overbearing.
I have to do the crashes in a lump:
I went in with a 17" A Custom Crash to match things up with.
15" A Custom Crash
This was beautiful, it opened so well. There was another that
was a little gong-y, but this was, as MD put it, "A big splash."
18" Avedis Thin Crash
The 17" I went with is really thin, and this is about the only
non K crash I could find that has a lower pitch than my 17" A Custom. Very
nice big explosion.
18" K Dark Crash Thin (Brilliant)
This is one of the lowest crashes I've ever heard! It is so thin
that it just roars out at you. The wonderful thing is that it also has
excellent ride qualities. It will work great with my 21" K Con. and the 22"
K Custom Flat as like that third, really light ride (I like something super
light for bass solos).
15" A Custom Crash; 17" A Custom Crash [already mine]; 18" A Thin Crash; 18"
K Dark Crash Thin:
Okay, the best part is how these crashes work together: they are
a cadence!!! (Okay, Kim didn't seem to hear it as much as I did, but I heard
it damn it!) I love to go down my crashes, kind of like toms, or up, or
whatever, but I think melodically anyway, and when I hit these in a
descending row, the 18" A to 18" K seems very cadential. I didn't pay enough
attention at the exact moment to figure out whether it was a perfect fifth
relationship or what, but the 18" K was the tonic by the end, very cool.
13" Azuka Multi-Crash:
This is to complete a family of two splashes I have that
includes 9" and 11" Trash Splashes. The Azuka I picked is dead. I mean that
in a great way, it crashes, gives you what its got, then it's gone. It'll
fit right in with the Trash Splashes.
13" K Hi-Hats (Bottom on top and a Bottom on the bottom)
This was a great last minute idea I had. This set of hats works
great together, they splash real nice (and fairly loud), the chick sound is
strong, and the stick sound is dynamite. Articulation was incredible, I
could play flam drags on these and they'd come through perfectly, but,
again, it wasn't at the expense of tone. They were dark and moody, just with
less wash than thinner ones might have. Now for the REALLY cool part: I have
5 other hi-hat cymbals (not pairs, just 5 other cymbals): two K tops (from a
set of K/Z's and then one that I picked up separately), a pair of Avedis
Mastersounds, and a Z Dyno Beat bottom (from the set of K/Z's). I will now
have 7 13'" cymbals, the possibilities are mind-boggling. I can't wait to
start mixing and matching!
Stuff I tried that didn't follow me home:
20" A Custom China:
This was actually very nice, I just wanted something a little
darker (they didn't have any 19" K Custom Chinas, which is what I was
looking for). Riding was great, I was playing paradiddles between the cymbal
and the floor tom, and they sounded great. The crash sound was very biting,
maybe a hair on the thin side. Very nice, just not what I wanted today.
12" Re-Mix Hi-Hats:
Interesting little buggers these. They got really dry for such
thin hats. I could see them working as an auxiliary pair, but not as mains
for me. The chick was a little wishy-washy, and the splash was kind of thin
as well. Nice closed on a x-hat mount, though.
18" Re-Mix Breakbeat Ride:
Okay, I almost grabbed one of these. VERY funky. Kim said this
is what he recommends to people looking for a ride similar to Steve Gadd's
(which is a K Custom Prototype). My first thought was that it was a
non-brilliant K Custom. That's how it sounds, too. The stick sound is dry
and metallic (sort of like a heavy version of the original DeJohnette line).
The more I think about it the more I feel like I should have grabbed one
today. I just couldn't justify it to myself, though. It is a fairly
one-dimensional sound (plus it's a little limited volume-wise due to its
size), and I'm just not sure I'll ever need that particular sound. It was
really neat, though, anyone who is looking for something a little different
on the dry side should definitely give one a listen.
Okay, so that was my day (wait, I thought you said this was a brief
run-down - sorry, I'm a little excited). After living with my new babies for
a while I'll give some updates. I'm sorry this got so long, it was a very
busy hour indeed! Thanks for reading (assuming there's anyone that made it
this far), I just wanted to share my wonderful experience at Zildjian and
publicly brag about how great the people were and how lucky I am to have my
new bronze beauties! Thank you Zildjian!!!!!!

You mean Kim Dunning. He's a friend of mine who lives right by the factory

As far as the cymbals go... you suck!!! Just kidding. I'm a tad envious. Enjoy
those cymbals brother.

Rob,
Actually, I've been cleaning out a whole bunch of cymbals that I've
acquired over the years and just never developed the long term affection for
that I thought I would (ironically enough, they've mostly been Sabians, I've
only sold one Zildjian, my 22" Ping Ride). So, from the bread I got for the
stuff I got rid of, I'm actually a little richer now, which I think is even
the best part. I got a treasure trove of goodies and it didn't cost me
anything apart from saying goodbye to some cymbals that needed a better home
than I was giving them anyway. I'll definitely keep you posted.

George,
Were they cool with you going there??? Or do you have to know the Pope
or something... I mean could someone like me go there??? I've never
found a really good store around my area that carries alot of
anything. So you don't get to really try stuff. Then when you do find
a store with a larger inventory, they won't let you try stuff.
I end up buying stuff mail order on the recommendation of
others--especially you guys on RMMP. But there's always the risk of me
not liking it, then trying to resell it "used, but like new", then
having Schuh call me a "cum-suckin, scrotum licking choad" or
something like that.... Hell I don't even know what a choad is!!!!!

Tom,
I originally heard that word on Beevis and Butthead, but it is a VERY old term. I
have heard two definitions for it. One is penis and the other is the word for the
area of skin between the anus and the scrotum. Someone over in the bodybuilding
newsgroup looked it up in an Old English dictionary. See what wonderful things
you can learn in RMMP!!! :-)

From what I understand, an exception was made for me (I don't think I
know the pope, maybe an archbishop - or at least a saint!). That's the cause
for my reference to "super powers" in my first post. I suppose it can't hurt
to ask either your local store or call Zildjian directly. Sabian, on the
other hand, is much more accommodating about bringing in 'nobodies' like me
(there was much less involved with previous trips to the Sabian warehouse in
Pembroke (I think it's in Pembroke now)). Unfortunately, the final judges
(my ears) just don't seem to really latch on to anything that Sabian makes
(although I do love the Flat Ride that they custom made for me in the
original DeJohnette style). So, you might have better luck arranging a trip
to a Sabian facility. I know how hard the mail order thing is, I've done
that myself. I've gotten things I love to this day (like my 13" K/Z hats)
and things I hated from the start (like my 22" AA Chinese (Brilliant)) from
mail order, it's very hit or miss. Cymbals are worth really going some
distance for, because when you find the right ones, you'll have an
instrument that will stick with you for a while. The K/Z hi-hats I mentioned
have been my workhorse hats for the last 9 years. Maybe if you have trouble
getting into one of the cymbal manufacturers a trip to New York (or your
nearest giant music city) would be a possible 'weekend vacation' spot? I
know I had considered that before my trip to Zildjian happened. It's
something to think about. Can you tell I take cymbals WAY seriously :-) .
Anyway, good luck in the hunt, sometimes that's half the fun (although
sometimes it's more frustrating than anything). Oh, and don't worry, I don't
know what a "choad" is either, although there was a discussion about its
meaning a couple months back, I just ignored it.
Take it Easy,
George

I've heard that referred to as the "taint"... Taint quite your scrot, taint quite

Rob,
I don't know about it meaning penis or not, but the area between the
scrotum and anus is referred to as the perineum. According to
Dorland's medical dictionary, there is no such word as "choad" listed.
It's not listed as a separate entity, or as a 'variation' to the words
"penis" or "perineum." I don't think it's medical...
It sounds like a pretty neat thing to call some idiot though.... I
mean, what sounds better??? "You're a scrotum-lickin'.....guy" or
"You're a scrotum-lickin' choad!!!"
I guess this MD thing comes in handy every once in awhile.

I didn't mean they would let you 'try' them... I meant they wouldn't
let you 'play' them. There's a difference...
Most stores let you take a wimpy 7A stick (sorry...no offense to 7A
stick players, but I play SD1's--hands are too big), and go like...
chang chang a lang, chang a lang, chang a lang on a ride or a large
crash. However, it's very rare (around here) that a store has the
facility to hae you go into a room and 'play' the damn things. I guess
there are alot of thrashers and whackers that they don't want to play
their cymbals, being new & all...
I do live about three hours from the Twin Cities. I've called around
once when I was there--to inquire what drum shops/music stores were
around & had any kind if an inventory. It sounded like a few had a
so-so inventory, but I either talked to some yutz who didn't know the
difference between an A Zildjian and an A Custom, or someone who
didn't have time to tell me about their inventory. Unfortunately I
didn't have time to explore all the shops around the Citries. I did
find one Gretsch dealer by calling. They told me the only inventory
they had was a Vinnie model kit that he had used personally on a
studio gig he had played in a local studio a month or so before that.
But for what they were asking for the kit Vinnie should be bringing to
my house personally...
Anyone out there who lives in the Cities, knows a good drum shop, and
wants to spend a few hours listening to & buying cymbals with a fellow
RMMPer???

Mark,
Thanks...sounds like a good deal. I'll have to look them up. I'm
trying to decide on some A Customs, vs. some new Sabians. I have a few
A Customs--fantastic cymbals. They always seem to sound good, no
matter how hard they are played...
As for the SD1's....... I just got a new box, and they're made much
lighter than the 'old ones.' I've actually broken three already--at
the shoulder/neck junction, playing the ride cymbal. that's NEVER
happened before, and I've played them for 6 years. Been through about
10-12 boxes of them. They're great--you don't have to hit as hard in
louder volume (ie; non-jazz) situations. I contacted Vic Firth--they
were real nice, offered to replace the broken ones and all. I'm going
to send them one of them and any more that break tonight on my Rock &
Roll gig...
Normally the Vic Firth sticks last a long time--the heads chip, the
shanks splinter, etc... I usually throw the sticks away before they
actually become unplayable. That's why it was such a shock that these
three broke--I've never broken a VF stick at the shoulder before. I've
always found Vic Firth to be a great company to deal with. Once they
sent me almost an enitre box of Dave Weckl sticks, as several of the
ones I bought were warped. I didn't even send them back any
sticks--just E-mailed Kelly Firth, and she replaced them.
I bet you they probably even make some nice 7A's too--although I bet
the don't sell too many, except to like, little kids and girly
drummers...!!!!!!!
BTW, you owe me a phone call.....

somewhat of an exception). Sorry for any confusion. And no, I'm nowhere near
endorsement stage just yet, still a nobody playing in the basement :-) . I
had a TOTAL blast. I didn't tour the place because I was much too busy
looking at cymbals. Besides, I toured the last time I finagled my way in
there, about 5 years ago.
Take it Easy,

Since the RMMP group seems to growing in numbers and therefore consumer $$$$,
maybe we could pull together and get some clout to arrange tours/sales for the
group that would otherwise be impossible individually. We would probably have
to create a user list and guarantee minimal attendee numbers but it might be
worth thinking about. Any ideas???

Paiste far and away is my choice of cymbals, but the Zildjian plant is

P.S. any job openings yet?
