I was running the p.a. for a band last weekend and their drummer was using a
Canwood custom all maple wood snare. Best sounding snare I've heard live. I
want one! Does anyone know where I can get a hold of one of these or know of
a website for Canwood drums. I know they are made in Canada (that's where I
am).

Thanks
Wayne

Not much info but here's a 1st shot using Google:

Endorser comments:

"Saf is big on using Canadian made products.
He uses Canwood drums - made by a farmer
who lives in Lloydminster on the border of
Saskatchewan and Alberta."

"BE: Canwood. I got them around 1985; they've been all around the world.
I've never used cases for them
unless I'm flying. They still sound fantastic. They are wonderful drums.
The shells were selected to have a
low fundamental resonant frequency to maximize the effective tuning
range. I can tune them very high or
very low and they speak the same way, with a consistent length of tone,
and the stick response is virtually the
same at any tuning. When I first played them, I was used to my Gretsch
and other sets, none of which have
such consistent stick rebound on all the drums. I'd play the floor tom
and my arm would fly up into the air
because I had developed a muscle memory over the years where it's
necessary to hit floor toms harder to get
the same volume and response as the snare and smaller toms. I soon got
used to the Canwoods ... too used to
them. I find it hard as hell to play provided drumsets at jazz festivals
both here and in other countries,
especially when they put those thick, sluggish, clear plastic heads on
the drums. Playing drums like that
becomes an Olympic event because since they have no pitch or tone, you
can't tune them, and you have to
beat them to a pulp to get any useable sound out of the drum. I prefer
thin Remo Diplomats. I hit the drums
hard, but I've only broken one drum head in over 25 years, and that one
broke only because it was so old,
the glue around the rim had dried out and cracked. "

I believe Canwood is a Keller shell company. They definitely use all-maple
shells, anyway. Musicstop (http://www.musicstop.com/) used to (and may
still) sell them, but they don't exist beyond New Brunswick, so might not be
an option for you. I can't imagine that there wouldn't be another dealer for
them somewhere near you though. I know that Musicstop can order raw Keller
shells that are cut and drilled to your specs by Canwood too.

While I've never seen any of their new kits on display, I have seen one used
set close up. It was a tiny little green 8/10/12/18 kit, and it looked real
sharp. All maple (natch) with rims mounts, immaculate condition, for
$800CAD, which is approx $544USD for the mathematically challenged. I didn't
get to play them (though I was MIGHTY tempted), but at that price I don't
see how you could go wrong. If my memory serves correctly, they sell
10/12/14/20 and 12/13/16/22 kits for $1300-$1500CAD + taxes ($884-$1020
USD). Those may have been specific package deals though, not open for custom
sizes.

is where i got mine . ask for dave skinner .. tell him i sent you. know
him well. the owner of canwood is fred pepper in lloydminister sak. his

outlet.unless there is none in your area. i tried that way first but due
to living in halifax ns and musicstop being here , i had to go through
them. i would have saved some money. wait is 3-6 months as a rule. fred
is a very interesting guy, knows alot about mfg of drums. I love these
drums, great sound ,all keller shells and i used pearl hardware.music
stop has a set of these in stock now, seen them yesterday, they are a
nice whiteish finish. they have a set or 2 a year made. i have heard
rumors some of these sets are made for jazz festivals then sold off..i
sometimes see sets sold locally used. $800-1200. went to see a set b4 i
bought mine, but the color was horrible and really scratched alot so i
took the plunge and got a set made. i know a few other local guys who
own these and never heard anything but good.. hope this helps mike

Thanks for all the info guys. I appreciate it. I'm actually only looking for
a snare since I have a Yamaha recording custom set made of cherrywood. They
are great sounding drums, but I need a good snare to compliment them. Seems
it may be difficult to find a Canwood snare around here. I seen a Yamaha
custom maple absolute(used) in a local store the other day for $425.00.
Anyone have opinions on this snare and is the price about average?

Thanks
Wayne

I played a set a few weeks back in Rabbit Lake, Sasketchewan at a
festival. Met the builder. Very typical Keller shells with no
proprietary hardware. Good simple finishes. Probably attractive to
Canadians looking for a good workhorse maple kit for less money than an
American counterpart but nothing out of the ordinary soundwise.

I bought beat up old set of Canwoods 9 years ago. Restored them with some
professional help. I've been to Fred Pepper's farm in Lloydminster SK. Keller
shells, but Fred seems to do wonders in sonically matching them. He's an
eccentric guy... quote:
"Endorsements!!??? Why should some poor 19 year-old drummer have to pay for Lars
Ulrich's drums!!???"
Mine are 22x18, 16x15ft, 15x15ft, 13x11, 12x10 and a kick-ass 14x7 snare!

For the money there isn't anything out there cat even remotely come close!!!
