such finesse. i've seen this guy play tremoloes with his left hand -
absolutely
flawless, i couldnt do the same with four hands...

They Didn't have any kind of PAISTE cymbals back then. I am sure he used
Z's and not the Crappy "Ludwig" cymbals that were the only other ones sold
back then with Ludwig kits.

Joe is the master. Ever since I've seen videos old and new of him (I
originally thank Shawn Martin, for sending me a tape where I first saw
this godly drummer), he's simply the drummer I've always wanted to
become. More than Buddy, and I dont' think I'm alone in saying that
isn't much of a stretch.

I saw his two drum solos on the Rhino.com video, Jazz Casual, and was
AMAZED at his beat and his explosions, the Ludwig set was rockin and his
tuning was nice and open. Brubeck was a genius for giving him all that
room too. Check out that video, it's only a 1/2 hour but it's also only
$14.99.

I've heard and read several instances where Joe described his setup on
the early DBQ recordings. On Take Five and most of the recordings
we're familiar with (including the '63 Carnegie Hall concert), he was
playing a 20" medium A Zildjian. I'm not sure at what point he
switched to Paiste but I would imagine that Drumron is pretty close to
the timeframe. Once the Sound Creation line was introduced, he had
his own "Bright Ride." He was still with Paiste for a short time
after the Signature line came out and had a Bright ride in that line
as well. Then of course, he made the deal with the devil and went to
Sabian & DW :)

ditto on that. i have a 20" paiste 602 thin crash that is the best ´bright
ride cymbal ive ever played.
btw. the hot licks videos are from late 80's so theres some minor irritating
spots here and there (joes sunglasses & red lightning etc).
theres a nice clarity in brubecks records with joe, many of the jazzers then
used
all the available space. b & friends however sometimes played very
simplistically to keep things clear.

Damn I love this group...you guys know everything!. oe is left out a
lot on polls, I never understood that. He's the kinda' drummer I'd
like to be.
Don't know if you know it, but Joe is legally blind, the glasses are a
Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles/blind guy thing. Just another testament to
how much of a God Joe is.
