I was listening to the "Time Out" album and I'm still blown away by
"Take Five". Does anyone know what Joe's set up was? Ludwig 12,14,20,
snare? What about the cymbals? I'd love to get some new cymbals that
sounds similiar to those. The quality of that recording was fantastic
too. 1957, I think? What kind of equipment was being used at that
time?...classic album...phenomenal musicians...love it!

Well done, DRUMRON!!! There's a concrete example of where r.m.m.p. is
tangibly useful.

such finesse. i've seen this guy play tremoloes with his left hand -
absolutely
flawless, i couldnt do the same with four hands...

They Didn't have any kind of PAISTE cymbals back then. I am sure he used
Z's and not the Crappy "Ludwig" cymbals that were the only other ones sold
back then with Ludwig kits.

ACTUALLY THE REASON PAISTE MADE THE 602'S WAS FOR MORELLO SPECIFICALLY... HE
HAS SAID THIS MANY TIMES... THEY TOOK HIS CIRCA LATE 50'S A ZILDJIANS AND
AROUND 1963-64 OR SO COPIED THEM EXACTLY,,, SO ID SAY AFTER 1964 THEYRE PAISTE
602'S BEFORE THAT OLD A'S... ON THE 1ST RECORDING OF TAKE 5 CIRCA 1960
(COLUMBIA RED LABEL 12" VINYL) WOULD HAVE PROBALY BEEN A ZILDJIANS

I don't mean to contradict anyone here, Joe pretty much stuck with
Ludwig and Zildjian or Paiste throught the 60's, but in the latest
Modern Drummer (it has an actual drummer on the cover, flame suit on
=) Joe HIMSELF describes the setup (to the best he can remember; guys
in those days I doubt ever thought they'd have to call up the info
again) he used on that recording. I haven't read it for a week, week
and a half so I can't relay it with 100% certainty. Check it out
though.

Joe is the master. Ever since I've seen videos old and new of him (I
originally thank Shawn Martin, for sending me a tape where I first saw
this godly drummer), he's simply the drummer I've always wanted to
become. More than Buddy, and I dont' think I'm alone in saying that
isn't much of a stretch.

Morello gets skipped over a lot in polls and such.

I saw his two drum solos on the Rhino.com video, Jazz Casual, and was
AMAZED at his beat and his explosions, the Ludwig set was rockin and his
tuning was nice and open. Brubeck was a genius for giving him all that
room too. Check out that video, it's only a 1/2 hour but it's also only
$14.99.

I've heard and read several instances where Joe described his setup on
the early DBQ recordings. On Take Five and most of the recordings
we're familiar with (including the '63 Carnegie Hall concert), he was
playing a 20" medium A Zildjian. I'm not sure at what point he
switched to Paiste but I would imagine that Drumron is pretty close to
the timeframe. Once the Sound Creation line was introduced, he had
his own "Bright Ride." He was still with Paiste for a short time
after the Signature line came out and had a Bright ride in that line
as well. Then of course, he made the deal with the devil and went to
Sabian & DW :)

ditto on that. i have a 20" paiste 602 thin crash that is the best ´bright
ride cymbal ive ever played.
btw. the hot licks videos are from late 80's so theres some minor irritating
spots here and there (joes sunglasses & red lightning etc).

theres a nice clarity in brubecks records with joe, many of the jazzers then
used
all the available space. b & friends however sometimes played very
simplistically to keep things clear.

Don't know if you know it, but Joe is legally blind, the glasses are a
Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles/blind guy thing. Just another testament to
how much of a God Joe is.

I saw Joe Morello at a clininc in the early 70s out here on Long
Island. I'll never forget it. When he started soloing with just his
left hand, he knocked everyone out At one point he was playing
triplets w/left hand very fast and said, " I don't think Buddy has
this down yet" He was so informative and kind, just like he comes
across on his videos.
I then said hello to him at a Billy Cobham clinic a few years later.
Billy was a little full of himself, but played great. He had three
bass drums, five pedals, etc... I told Joe during the clinic how
inspired I was by his playing, etc, etc.. He was cool. I also said "
Joe, I wish you would go up there and show this guy how to play on 4
drums." He just laughed. Later that year I read in Modern Drummer
during a Joe Morello interview how he was dissappointed by drummers
(w/o mentioning any names) who give clinics just to show off and not
really share any advice or practice technique.

Just thought I'd share a little story.....

I am sure you are correct but they had a Ludwig stamp on them and were the
shitz! Used to wear out in the mounting hole quickly and the sounded
pretty Dead right out of the box!!
