So, today my son and I took our weekly excursion to Jack's Drum Shop here in
Boston . . . you know, just to see what's new. New hi-hats are what I've
been "needing" lately, so I go to check those out first. I look at some
Zildjians, Bos, Sabians, pretty much everything they've got. Well, I step
on one of the many hh stands set up, and I get this indescribable
feeling/vibe, whatever you want to call it. It's that sound! The one
that's in my head! I couldn't believe it! That's the first time I've ever
found a cymbal (or pair, in this case) that actually sound like the ones in
my mind. I usually don't buy cymbals without having at least my main ride
with me, but I couldn't let this find slip away. Of course I set 'em up as
soon as I got home, and they are perfect with all three of my main cymbals,
I'm in Hi-hat heaven! I wasn't expecting to buy anything but a pair of
Rabbs today; my wife is gonna kill me!

BTW, the cymbals were K. Constantinople, and they had a few other pair, but
they sounded like hell.
Go figure!

I was in Rupp's Drums in Denver this last weekend, just to check out what's
new and to see what's turned up in the used cymbal stacks. They had the
Constantinople Big Band Ride that we all read George Larson's rave review
on, and that I'd been wanting to hear. It sounded a lot like my Sabian 20"
AA Crash/Ride, so I wasn't that impressed, especially considering the price
difference.

I found a pair of AA 13" Fusion hats in the used stack. I a/b'd them with
some AAX 14" Stage that are a lot like my AA Regulars, and they definitely
had the cut that Dan's always talking about. They said they would go for
$95, but I really don't need them. But it's not about need, is it? I'll
probably end up calling them and picking them up next time I'm in town.

Isn't that the fun part about cymbals? I just love that (especially with
non-Paiste lines) you can get amazing variety within the same cymbal type
and size. I have a strong feeling that if I hadn't been able to pick from
about 20 Big Band Rides I might'nt have found a good one. It kind of adds to
the excitement for me - the thrill of the hunt or something silly like that.
I think that the new Cons are especially prone to vast variances (but I
suppose Zildjian would say that even that is reminicsent of the original
K's). I'm sure the one you heard was nothing special, but believe me, mine's
a gem.

I have a sore backside from just such a find that I didn't act on. I had hit
this set of Sabians and experianced the feeling you discribe... It was THE
sound I wanted. I was in the local shop pricing DW sets and I asked the
sales guy to toss this AMAZING set of Sabian HH hats I had just found (HALF
PRICE) into the "tab" he was adding up... Well, I didn't end up buying the
set and walked out without "the" cymbals. I went back a week later (a WEEK)
and they were gone.

i'm such a moron.

It's happened to me so many times in the past, that I just couldn't pass 'em
up this time...the wife was pissed. . . she just don't understand. She's
one of the few drummers I know that doesn't have any sort of gear lust.
