I've done it a couple of times. Sometimes I just like to set up things
differently. It *does* have an effect on how you play...suddenly (out of
necessity) I approached fills differently with no "rack" toms.
EC
I've used a scaled down version of this on an unplugged gig with less
toms, snares and x hats. I called it my "rhythm" kit. I also had a conga
and a cajon (box) that I sat on and played. It worked wonderfully. I
really like having all the "ride instruments" (hats, ride cymbal,
cowbells, etc. grouped in front. Johnny Rabb has akitt that has two of
his company's snare drums (10" and 12") to the left of the hi hat and
the little 8" snare in between the regularly place snare and the floor
tom.
I've been talking to Dave Dyer who makes Ryzer Rax custom drum racks
about making a version of the old trap tables out of his rack bars with
the clamps built in to facilitate thes kind of set ups. what do y'all
think? His racks are on my website if you want to check out some cool
stuff. I'm the distributor.

my band plays regularly at the city walk at universal studios. one day, i
showed up & realized that i had the *wrong* tom mounts (i have a few different
kits). just a bass drum, snare & cymbals.
for 5 hours.
actually, i was amazed at how much i enjoyed myself. paying that much attention
to what was coming out of my snare caused me to find out how many different
sounds i could pull out of one drum. and i concentrated on the groove more than
i would if i had 4 other drums hovering around me. so anyway, what began as a
nightmare ended as a great experience.
as always, just my .0000000001. your mileage will vary.

george, you totally suck! that is pretty much *exactly* the setup i've been
preparing to build. i was getting a remote hi-hat this weekend, to reside in
front of me, as my primary hi-hat. setup would have gone like this:
left - 10" and 14" toms
right - 8", 12" and 16" toms.
middle (directly in front of me) - 1 cable hi-hat, 2 x-hats in various stages
of aperture, 2 rides. crashes & splashes interspersed everywhere.
actually, it's been done before. dony wynn did it with brooks & dunn. i once
set up his kit on the tonight show set, and although it looked a bit funny, it
was the most comfortable kit i've ever played.
as you've said, george, great minds think alike... =)

I have my toms all set-up in the floor tom position. I was looking to get
better access to my chinas and bells. I saw the Bozzio pic and how his
floor toms went across to his snare and then to the 2" depth melodic toms
and went hmmm. I don't ignore the toms though. It has made an
interesting set-up. My drums are on one plane, my hats and bells above
and the chinas over that. It's like a multilayer cake, but more fun to
play. I don't have any pics yet, but I made a simple diagram. If you
look at the old pics and at the diagram it will be clear.

Tonight (9/10/99) a band from Mobile, AL was playing on Campus and the
drummer has a Sonor set in Scandinavian Birch with only a 18"x20", a
11"x13" suspended "floor" tom and a snare drum....the cymbals were a Ride,
a sizzle cymbal, and hats. Very basic, and they were on a
fusion/roots/rock/soul trip...
By the way...good players, but boring to tears!
And a further note...when playing an open air gig through a kickin' PA
please consider a vent hole in your bass drum...The sound company was a
good one, but this guy's KICK had no PUNCH and was TOOOO resonant for
close micing. It would have been sweet for a small room acoustic gig, but
for a large outdoor thing it was horrible.
Lot's of drummers tune the drums for themselves and do not take in to
consideration how the set sounds when miked and pumped thru a PA
system...think about it if you want your drums to sound the best they can
to the audience/venue your at.

HI!
I have played a whole tour with just a snare, bassdrum, hi-hats, floortom
and a ride. It was wonderful just because everybody felt that there
suddenly was a lot of space left for music.
Look at the Hip-Hop scene. Quite a lot of them drummers play with just the
basic set. What else do you need for great beats and grooves???

Of course, any group with a female singer is considered "hip hop" it seems...
and any (no offense here, but it's what I've gathered) group that is derived of
mainly african-americans is considered "R&B" even if they play rap... is it me
or are music critics people mixing the musical genres a bit too much?
