Alex Van Halen used to use one; the only album I can specifically recall
with it was 1984. He had a cool sound back then; perfect for the music.

Hell yeah! Well, it *was* pretty hip in 1978... Ten toms and still very
portable! Used to tune them to trade licks with the bassist--sick eh?
Admit it...You were just trolling for dinosaurs.

When Steve Vai toured here last year - Im sure Mike Mangini used a kit
composed of only rototoms (small in front of him, increasing in size
around to both his left and right side)

That's when *I* used rotos for all my toms! Pretty dry sounding, and
not as portable as you might think - suitable cases didn't exist back
then (do they now??) Also, without individual stands, independent
positioning/tilting/angling can be a nightmare.
Bozzio used all roto-toms c1980-83 (with 2 regular kicks & reg snare)

M.J. I saw the Simpsons episode with the hurricane the other day, and when the part
in the Quickie Mart came up I marveled at how I now know this useless piece of
information. Got a good laugh!

In the late '70's Bill Bruford was using roto toms in place of traditional
toms. Check out the records "One of A Kind" and "Feels Good To Me".
Also, I have an old Louie Bellson record that features him on an entire
kit of roto toms - bass, snare, toms. He plays this roto-kit on a tune,
appropriately called "Roto Blues". Louie plays the head (melody) on the
drums with the band, then does a long solo. Kinda cool.
And (though it was only one roto tom), Bruford's work with '80's era King
Crimson.

Louie bellson used to play a set made of ALL ROTOS, Toms, bass drums and
the snare! I have the album "Louie Bellson's 7: Live at the Concord Summer
Festival (1976). Louie plays a "song" on the Roto set called "Roto Blues".
He playes the melody on the set, then the band kicks in and he plays the
"rhythm" parts. There's a photo of Louie playing his Roto set on the
cover. He had custom holders for his roto bass drums, and it looks like
six toms and a roto snare. The snare is a 14" roto with snare wires under
the head (it's single headed). In the late 70s-early 80s Pearl made a
double headed Roto snare called the Pearl Vari-pitch. (I had one and
recently sold it). It was a 14" roto tom for the batter head whicj was
connected to a 6x14 snare shell, with "normal" snare striners and a botton
head.
Yes, you can have a whole set of rotos INCLUDING the bass and snare
drums...it was done over 20 years ago!
Alex Van Halen also used a ton of rotos during the Van Halen 1984 album
and tour, Terri Bozzio also used a roto set as did many other in the 70s
and 80s. I remember a roto set featured in the back of Modern Drummer mag.
years ago that had something like 30 rotos in it!

Hey ... I think I could make you envious :)
I actually OWN such a kit: It's the PureCussion HeadSet. As far as I can
remember, there was a small thread about PureCussion being sold to
DW about a year ago, just when I got my pre-used HeadSet for $600 !
The best deal I ever made, apart from my 50 bucks-Yamaha QY 10 ;)
- It sounds great. You don't need a different bassdrum - in fact, you'd
be surprised to hear how great this roto-tom-like bassdrum sounds.
Actually, I'd say it's the best sounding part of the kit! Speaking of
the kit's sound, the snare is a roto-tom, too! Well, you probably
can imagine what it sounds like :( But it's a great glass-holder,
as Vinnie Colaiuta once proved in a MD ad...
- It comes with a bag where you can fit the COMPLETE set ! To have
a useful set, you just need your cymbal stands, hi-hat, bass drum
pedal, cymbal case and snare in addition to that bag and that's it.
- It's a great practice kit! I'm currently using it exclusively for
that purpose. Put old heads on there, get yourself some foam,
cut it in 12'', 13'' and 14'' sizes, stick it to the heads and they're
almost dead since there's no shell ring at all. Since I live in a
small flat and should absolutely avoid noise, I still have to use
the Calato Blasticks, though, but that's okay with me. I have no
bassdrum-head at all - the beater goes right through the hoop
and hits my foot-practice-pad :)
So try to find one if you can !
I can only recommend it.
Greetings,
Michael

After Bart tied the balloon to Groundskeeper Willie's Kilt...
I went around calling everyone "a bunch of puritan pukes" for a month!
...and when he hallucinated "Fergie"...Hoot mon!
[back to topic] ...How 'bout them rototoms, eh? I'm thinking of digging
them out and setting them up again. Anyone have any favorite heads other
than the black cs that they sold with? [That seemed to give the clearest
*pitched* sound.] Tried pinstripes; didn't like 'em... Anyone tried
anything exotic [like calf]? Rotos don't seem to project much when
damped...

Although he didn't use all Roto-toms, Connie Kay of Modern Jazz Quartet
fame used large Roto-toms in place of tympani drums. He started doing
this a long time ago, but, I'm not quite sure when.

Not when I saw the DD tour. I also have two videos from that tour and in
both he was using a Ludwig set with Simmons pads on the "floor tom" side
of his set, no rotos.
When I caught the tour the album was just coming out so I might have been
catching the end of the Fair Warning Tour. He was using the black and
white striped Ludwig set pictured on the Diver Down release (back cover or
inner sleeve).
You can hear his roto set on "1984" and see it on the video for "Jump".

Didn't Bruford use a mostly Roto-tom kit back in the late
seventies, around the time of UK and the first two Bruford
albums? Terry Bozzio also had a kit comprising mostly of
Rotos in the early Missing Persons days.
Jon Farris of INXS used Rotos, but I think he just used
them as vehicles for triggers.
