I have a possible interesting poll here.
Whats the best or most popular or most interesting-eye catching color
for a drumset when playing live as seen by the fans/audience/crowd?

If you were to get a new kit and you wanted it to really stand out on
stage whats the best color? (Remember there are colored lights too)

SILVER SPARKLE, every time. That's why my rock kit is done up in
green sparkle. :)

Hey Chris
Yeah it's an interesting question.
I bought a white marine pearl in the 60's, and yup it looked
sharp. Then it turned green/yellow, so I had it re-done in
Black. Of all sets I ever sold in retail...by far black was
the most popular finish. Blue sparkle and red sparkle were
huge in the 60's and then silver sparkle. If I bought a set
today I like gray cortex covering. I saw Erskine with one
and just loved it ...it was soooo different on stage.
Seems Choad sparkle is very in these days around the Group
:)

Either WMP, White gloss/white lacquer or a silver sparkle. Any color
light thrown at it will reflect. I don't think the chrome finishes
would fare as well though.

I would have to add that a bright, solid yellow would cut through, too.
Plus the yellow base would mix well with any of the standard lighting
gels.

Alex Van Halen used to have an all chrome kit that you could see a mile away.

Oh, and how about those old acrylic Ludwig kits of the mid-seventies that
had the tiny lights mounted inside the shells?

I'd have to vote for two different finishes. One would be silver sparkle (and
not just because I have a silver sparkle kit... well maybe it is) and the other
would be a natural maple (or birch) in a satin finish. The satin finish wouldn't
be too glossy, would sort of reflect (in a subtle way) the colors being shined
upon it, and would still look like wood from the audience.

Gloss white or silver sparkle. My Sessions are white and they look
kick-ass under colored lights.

You should check out the Sonor Lites natural Scandanavian Birch finish. The coolest
and most durable natural finish ever produced imo. Anyone know what they used to
finish those?

My Terraverdi Green Genistas look pretty damn good onstage, and even better up
close, but I'd guess that it has something to do with the amazing Premier

besides drum finishes, i think putting black tom heads on the bottom of all the
toms looks really sharp too... anyone do this?

I used to, but then I heard my drums from the house...yuck! The only usable
black heads IMO are Evans Resonants, and I don't really love their sound
either.

I remember that set - And Keith Moon's, Ansley Dunbar's, Nigel
Olson's, Mitch Mitchell's and Phil Ehart's to name a few. I
didn't want to be the first to mention chrome but now that you've
mentioned it and still not voted for them Dan, I have to say that
chrome is the answer to that question if eye-catching under
lights is really the criteria. Chrome bottom heads add to the
riot when the lights come on. Chrome drums are extremely high
maintenance and scratches, pits and dings are heartbreaking.
Finger prints and smudges appear by magic. If a beverage gets
within 5 feet of them it will spill automatically and splatter.
They will jump out of moving vehicles on their own, stagehands
will trip over them on an otherwise empty stage and small dogs
will urinate on them for no apparent reason. Never-the-less
chrome drums are beautiful curved mirrors that drive the lighting
crew crazy, (it takes an experienced stage manager to light them
right).

I've heard a lot of pros and cons for chrome sets over the years,
I know them first hand. For this poll, chrome sparkles and
dazzles like no other finish short of bronze and copper (I'm
thinking of the set Carl Palmer Built)! .

I have a Sonorlite Scandanavian Birch snare and I think it is ugly on stage.
But my Creme Laquer Sonorlites pick up all the colors from the lights.
Anyway, lighter colored kits standout and look the best on stage.

I went to a Statler Brothers show a couple of weeks ago and their
drummer had a Remo kit in glossy white that took on whatever color the
stage lights threw on it. Very cool. Definitely added to the mood.
Plus he had some really monster rack toms.

On the other hand, my kit is a midnight black satin finish that really
doesn't take on colors (it looks like a charcoal gray under most
lighting conditions)and I think it looks cool anyway.

I have had 4 kits in the last year and 1/2 & none of the first 3 where
metallic. I now have a white set of metallic Ayotte customs & they look
much more impressive on stage. It has ALL colors of small metallic
specks inside the clear coat over the white lacquer. It looks white
with gray specks in normal light, but put spotlight (especially colored
ones on it) and it sparkles and has a slight prism effect with the
different colors of metallic in the clear coat.

That was a bitchin' set. Alex VH did something similar when he used
Simmons and surrounded the pads with Octobans covered with like big pieces
of a broken green mirror (or at least it always looked green to me).

Silver sparkle is a very classic finish. It says to many things; kitch,
flash, hot rod. And it works so well on stage because of the way it
reflects all the colored lights. My old Rogers were (well, most of them
still are) sorta pearly silver metallic, like a Hyundai a saw the other
day. It's like the finish would suck up the lighting and radiate it. The 2
pictures on my web site don't really show the effect since the lights are
mostly in the same color range. But like if I had a fuschia light on one
side and green on the other, the shells came alive.

Clear Vistalites also look great, especially when they've built up a few
years of micro scratches to diffuse the light a little. They glow instead
of looking glass-like.

I think that any sparkle finishes look great under lights, especially
Rogers & Gretsch glass sparkles. The glass glitters are more 3
dimensional and jump out much more than the uniform sparkles of Ludwig &
Slingerland.

I have a set of Yamaha Maple Customs finished in a custom white
metalflake color that I put black bottom heads on. It looks killer! And the
kit really looks good under colored lights, because of the different colored
flakes in the lacquer finish.

Why choose A color, choose rainbow. My maple set is various complementary
colors of vibrant aniline dye. Each tom is two adjacent colors in the ROYGBIV
spectrum, with the dividing line on a diagonal. So the 10" is violet and red,
the 12" is red and orange, etc. The basses are three colors each.

Lined up with all 7 toms, the set covers the whole spectrum with a little
overlap at the ends. Even when I use 1 bass, 1 mounted, and 1 floor tom it
still has all 7 colors represented. It's very festive, if you can picture it,
and it screams wood grain, with water-clear batters and resonants to show off
the natural maple interiors.
