You might want to check out TheBOngoGroup at www.yahoogroups.com for
specific questions about bongos. The folks there are pretty helpful.
The traditional suggestion would be palm butter or snake oil, available form
your local botanica or wherever fine santeria accoutrements are sold. In
case you don't have one of those in your neighborhood, palm butter is a good
substitute, available at your grocery store.
Many people swear by things from the ag store, like bag balm (for milkers)
and cornhuskers lotion, both of which are lanolin-based.
I think that anything that you would put on your own skin would do. I use
the same hand cream on my bongos as I do on my hands.
After treating the heads with whatever you are using, a few hours in the sun
would do them good as well.
