I'm looking for a specific recording of "Poinciana," made sometime
around 1960 or not long prior. I was under the impression that Ramsey
Lewis recorded it, but I don't really know, and I can't find any
references to a Ramsey Lewis recording of the song. Did he record it?
Where can I find these recordings? I spent a long time searching song
lists for his albums with no luck.

Thanks. I can't find any clips online to see if any of his recordings
are the specific one I have in mind, but I'll take your word for it.

Where would be the best place to buy a downloadable MP3 of the song? I
tried mp3.com, but they don't have any downloadable versions of the
tracks that interest me.

Also, if I buy an mp3 and I want to give it to someone as a gift, how do
I do that? I assume there's some sort of protection on them that keeps
them from being freely copied and sent around to prevent piracy, no? I
don't need the song myself, so I would effectively be transferring
ownership of the file to someone else (like handing them a 45-rpm record
back in the olden days).

It's the one that originated the 'poinciana' beat, and shaped a lot of Miles'
thinking about pacing.

I guess you could call it a classic in some ways, and it actually got airtime
here and there when it came out, which was one of the things that interested
Miles iirc. I'm fairly sure it's the best known recording of the tune.

pershing "
because it 's one of the best records in the story of jazz and you should
buy the whole Cd....

The other day I randomly found out that I actually own this album. I think a
family friend had originally loaned it to me but we never returned it (I
found it next to an old CD-ROM I remember he had loaned or given to my
aunt). Very good album - I now remember having listened to it quite a bit
when I first got it, then putting it away with the intent of giving it back.

Maybe my mother still keeps in touch - it's been at least 4 years...

Dig the drummer, and the trio dynamics. Sublime.
