I've been posting my playlists for a few years over at
http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=26 and occasionally
here but I'll try to keep up with it a bit more regularly especially
since the show's been available on the web for a few years now.

Orchestra, Ta Ki Ta and a visit in the studio from Tony Montague who's
putting on a South African dance party featuring the band from the
South African show Umoja at the Maritime Labour Centre on Monday
December 17th - apparently it's their night off! New Richard Underhill
release hot off the presses! Got a number of calls about the Roland
Kirk so another track is coming up soon!

Just catching up with last week's show, a bit of a look back, a bit of
a look ahead with upcoming shows (at that time) with the Umoja Band,
Ian Hendrickson-Smith, Michael Blake (at Cap College in January),
Ornette Coleman, George Roberts, Bruno Hubert, and Dave Brubeck. Nice
relaxing show, got a couple of calls from folks who appreciated
hearing the Indestructible Beat of Soweto - I guess it's been off the
radar for a while - winding down for the year's end and off to my book
club's Christmas party!

This week's show coming momentarily ....

Slightly truncated show, started at 3 this week since the Community
Living Show had a guest in for a special show.

Not quite a Christmas show but slipped in a couple of fun things,
brief tributes to Frank Morgan and Joel Dorn (by way of Roland Kirk -
they have quite a funny exchange on Here Come the Whistle Man);
upcoming shows for Michael Blake, George Roberts, B3 Kings, the Night
Crawlers and the Anita O'Day film (don't miss it!).

That's my last show of the year, Robert Kerr is back from the shadows
to fill in next Friday, I'm off to Montreal later this morning and
I'll be back in the New Year.

Thanks to Brian, Cory at the Cellar, Johnny O., Ken, Julie, Rainbow
and all the folks over at Coastal Jazz, Cem on Gabriola, Fiona up at
Cap, Coat with NOW, John K. with Hard Rubber, all the great musicians
in the city and all the other movers and shakers that make Vancouver
such a great music town. From early outlooks, 2008 looks to be better
than ever; happy holidays everybody and I'll see you in the new
year ... N

Handed the whole show over to an Oscar Peterson tribute, and tried to
avoid some of the more obvious things that have been getting around
lately. A number of phone calls and a few requests that I managed to
get on, still didn't get around to quite a few favorites that I was
hoping to catch - Coleman Hawkins & Ben Webster, Soulville, playing
with Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Stan Getz/JJ Johnson, live at the
Blue Note, Canadiana Suite, too much great music. I'll try to squeeze
the odd thing into the next few shows.

Working on an interview with Michael Blake for his upcoming show at
Cap College on January 19th with the sextet that recorded the recent
Amor de Cosmos CD for Songlines. Things start getting really busy with
gigs in the next little while, stay tuned ... N

Just realized that this was my last show for January, couple of
drummers named Haynes, leadins to what turned out to be a couple of
fantastic concerts: Atomic at the Western Front on Saturday and Simon
Shaheen at Cap on Sunday - both were sublime.

Had a visit from Tony Montague talking about Festival Baobab starting
this coming weekend, other upcoming shows from Morgan Childs, Bill
Charlap, Tord Gustavson, Ornette Coleman and so on.

More in the way of upcoming shows tomorrow but I'll try to squeeze in
some new releases and recent acquisitions that are threatening to take
over my living room. See you next month ... N

Matching up two drummers named Haynes again, when I got home Friday
and looked in the New York Times arts section, there was a picture of
Roy Haynes with the band I played ... spooky.

By all reports the confab with the other Haynes and Blake at the
Cellar on the weekend was pretty amazing, looking forward to the
recording. Also announced the lineup with Herbie Hancock for his
festival appearance, Chris Potter sax, African guitarist Lionel
Loueke, Dave Holland bass and Vinnie Colaiuta drums!

Other upcoming shows Bill Charlap at Cap on February 14th, Spanish
Harlem Orchestra the 15th, Festival Baobab Feb 1, 2 & 8, Time Flies
Feb. 6-9, and Ornette on the 17th. Johnny O. pointed out that this
month is about the 50th anniversary of Ornette's first released
recording so I'm planning an Ornette special on the A-Trane on the
15th, any requests?

Also a couple of fabulous new releases from Hugh Masekela and Alvin
Queen, my ears are burning ... N

Mostly nods to concerts (what a crazy month), past now - Time Flies,
Tord Gustavsen, and tonight Bill Charlap (soon to return I'm told).
Still upcoming - Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Ornette Coleman, Steve
Turre.

I was hoping to have a visit from Francois Houle last week but he
couldn't make it unfortunately, we'll try to reschedule for another
time.

Show on the 15th mainly handed over to Ornette Coleman with some
slight side forays but busy days, who ever heard of a February with
five Fridays?

As promised, the show was handed over to Ornette in celebration of
both his appearance at the Chan Centre on February 17th but also his
50th anniversary as a recording artist.

It's always fun doing features like this, I'm always getting reminded
of things that I'd forgotten or never realized. Like the Free Jazz
session and the Jazz Abstractions session were done on consecutive
days. Or that Coltrane made his recording debut on the soprano
saxophone on an Ornette tune - The Blessing which wasn't released
until 1966, 6 years after it was recorded. Or that the titles on To
Whom Who Keeps a Record are lined up to form a sentence (Music Always
+ Brings Goodness + To Us + All + P.S. Unless One Has + Some Other +
Motive For It's Use). Or that the tunes on Ornette! are initials which
are named after works of Sigmund Freud.

Anyway, I've made brief comments about the concert elsewhere, awe-
inspiring ... N

+ produced by Teo Macero

Power to the people!

Started of with an oblique tribute to Teo Macero who produced so many
classic recordings and was quite an interested player and composer in
his own regard. Other than his own famous works for Columbia, I was
reminded that he produced Michael Blake's first recording as a leader
and Lazz's story prompted pulling out the Loose Tubes for two of my
favorite pieces. (Hey Lazz, did the other two releases ever come out
on CD?)

Buddy Miles also passed away last week, he did play with some fine
guitarists over the years and nods to upcoming shows by Lisa Miller,
Michael Herring's Vertigo and Campbell Ryga.

This week an Women's Jazz Show in celebration of International Women's
Day, I already have some requests!

I used to annually but haven't done a women's jazz show in a few years
but there was a general buzz around the station to do special
International Women's Day programming. So I loaded up the old record
bag and although it was great fun, only got through a small fraction
of faves, pretty eclectic mix though. Few requests - Julie Driscoll/
Tippetts, Mary Lou Williams and the Melba Liston.

Upcoming gigs for this coming weekend Lisa Miller's Octet (her new
recording hot off the presses) and Michael Herring's Vertigo (an
unofficial woman for this week) Friday and Saturday respectively.

I'm taking a break this week and Cory will be filling in (maybe he'll
post his list?), and I'll be back with more faves on the 21st.

Relaxin' on a holiday good Friday afternoon, an old buddy Richard came
down to hang out and we just played some good ones. Nods to upcoming
shows in Vancouver: Chick Corea Return to Forever (a lot of people
forget that the first incarnation of RTF was as Stan Getz' Captain
Marvel band), Herbie Hancock, Ross Taggart's stint at the Cellar and
Vespers, and the Guitar Summit with Bill Coon, Oliver Gannon & Mike
Rud this weekend at Cap College. (Not to mention compositions by Joni
Mitchell, Ray Davies/the Kinks, the Grateful Dead, Peter Gabriel, and
Fela Kuti - talk about the new standards!)

This Friday more recent releases and faves before the Spring
Fundraiser starting on April 4th. Stay turned on and tuned in .... N

I haven't posted the last show from March yet (coming soon) but I
wanted to get last Friday's show up, it was the first show of the
spring fundraising marathon and we did the Trane to Train special
again - from the A-Trane at 3 past Crossroads (the country blues show)
past In the Claddagh Ring through to the Gospel Train ending at
9:30 .... pheewwwwww. We raised over a thousand dollars in 6 and a
half hours.

The fundraising theme this time round is Sex Drugs & Rock and Roll and
we tried to mix it up and have some fun. I couldn't find a rock n roll
version of take the a train so I made one by mashing Robert Gordon
(with Danny Gatton!) into the Ellington Orchestra.

So the playlist above is a smattering of some of the stuff I
contributed over the course of the show, lots of fun! Had a bunch of
visitors including Franco who came down to hang out and Coat Cooke who
dropped by with a New Orchestra workshop demo and talked about the NOW
show with Nicolle Mitchell next Friday. Even snuck in some Dee Daniels
in advance of her show at Cap College in a couple of weeks.

This coming Friday I'm doing a (solo) fundraising show and I thought
I'd do something a little different. Over the last few years, I've
tapped into a tape trading community and periodically pepper the show
with unreleased gems; I've occasionally made copies of things for
folks if they ask nicely.

This Friday, I'll try to do all unreleased recordings and, as an
incentive for people to sign up, I'll make a copy of any single
recording for anyone who signs up as a member of the station.

Currently I'm planning to include rarities like:

John Coltrane & Stan Getz recorded at a European Newport Tour
Lambert Hendricks & Ross recorded in Germany in 1960
Roland Kirk with Andrew Hill at Newport
Lenny Breau and Danny Gatton
Thelonious Monk with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers 2 CDs of out-
takes from the Atlantic sessions
Abdullah Ibrahim/Don Cherry/Carlos Ward
Giorgio Gaslini tribute to John Coltrane
Don Byron tribute to Henry Mancini and Sly Stone
John Zorn - Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet Live
John Zorn - Big Gundown live in Italy
Return to Forever/Headhunters Soundstage DVD
Mingus with Roland Kirk and Yusef Lateef at Birdland
some Miles but I don't know what yet ...

I'm open to requests and suggestions - don't be afraid to ask, I've
got lots!

Montgomery but they're all great dates.

The offer stands, I'll make a copy of any of them (see the earlier
list of shows too) for anyone who'd like to sign up as a member of the
station. Drop me a line and let me know, or drop me a line for a
request - I barely scratched the surface last week so I may do some
more, with some recent release diversions this week ... N

The last fundraising show of this spring session and I extended the
'private recordings' offer for signing up with the station as well as
including some new releases, recent acquisitions and upcoming gigs.
The CD release gigs last weekend for Melody Diachun, and this weekend
for James Danderfer, Dee Daniels at Cap tomorrow night and a new
acquisition of Fern Lindzon's disc with some wonderful duets with
George Koller, Don Thompson and Reg Schwager - more about that later.

The jazz festival lineup was announced this week (see
http://www.coastaljazz.ca/index.cfm?page_id=62 for preliminary
details) so most of the show will be for some previews. But the
ScottyHard/Scott Harding benefit is on at the Commodore tomorrow
night, Talking Pictures with the Unexpected at Ironworks, Dee Daniels
at Cap, Mark Sherman / Joe Magnarelli and James Danderfer at the
Cellar this weekend, sounds like a festival in Vancouver right now!

Mixed bag this week, with the Jazz Fest lineup announced did a number
of things from artists coming to the festival this year, but found a
1958 Cafe Bohemia broadcast with the late Jimmy Giuffre in my bag, as
well as iminent concerts from Dee Daniels, Talking Pictures, Mark
Sherman/Joe Magnarelli, James Danderfer etc.

Also played a bunch of music associated in one way or the other with
Scott Harding in anticipation of last Friday's benefit at the
Commodore which sold out and was a lot of fun to boot! Apparently
there will be a more jazz-oriented benefit (not to besmirch the
stylings of the Jazzmanian Devils) upcoming, more details will be
forthcoming.

By the way, the Thirsty Ear label donated a bunch of copies of Scott
Harding's fabulous remix cd Radical Reconstructive Surgery - check out
samples at http://www.myspace.com/scottyhard - which mixes up folks
like John Medeski, Matthew Shipp, William Parker etc in a heady funky
stew. I believe there are still some left at $20 with all proceeds to
Scott - if you want one, drop me a line and I'll point you in the
right direction.

I'm off to Toronto for my brother's wedding (at Casa Loma!) this week
so Cory Weeds will be taking care of business this Friday, tata ... N

Off this week, pre-empted for some station maintenance although I
understand they'll be rebroadcasting an old show, and don't forget:
the archives are alive!

Don't miss the benefit for Lawrence at Ironworks on Saturday, tata ...

Just catching up from a couple of weeks ago; Jared Burrows came down
for the first hour in anticipation of the East Vancouver Jazz
Orchestra performance that Saturday. Aside from a small detour to
commemorate the passing of Walt Dickerson (including a couple of his
collaborations with Sun Ra) and a preview of the East Marries West
performance, mostly stuck to artists coming to this year's jazz
festival.

Realized at a certain point that this year's fest is a real bassists
treat, arguably half-a-dozen of the world's top ten jazz bassists are
playing the festival in some capacity or another this year: Dave
Holland, Charlie Haden, Miroslav Vitous, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Steve
Swallow, Barry Guy - more about that later ... N

Last week's show, the 'request line' for Jazz Festival artists worked
out well, the Andy Bey, Michael Blake and Miroslav Vitous were
requests. Along with new releases from Cory Weeds, and Joel
Haynes/Seamus Blake, we had some nods to the passing of Jimmy McGriff
and Earl Hagen (with a left-of-centre Harlem Nocturne). The Miroslav
Vitous overlap with L.Ron's favorite keyboard player Chick Corea in
advance of Return to Forever this weekend and other festival fun. And
the legendary Kenneth Patchen/Al Neil recording as a reminder that
there will be an Al Neil Homage Collage do at the festival this year -
note that the Jazz Festival cover artwork this year is a collage by Al
Neil.

Late start at 3 pm tomorrow afternoon, but the lines are open
604-684-7561 for requests for Jazz Fest artists, promises to be fun

Catching up with playlists, slightly truncated (started at 3 pm) but a
fun show. Again (like most shows these days) mainly jazz festival
preview, but also nods to some other gigs, the cd release concerts for
both the Cory Weeds and the Houle/Smulovitz cds. Also some stuff from
Return to Forever from the new anthology, and I was right - that was a
really fun gig!

artists appearing at the Festival in the next week (as I usually do
for the opening day A-Trane) but I'll be open for requests from the
bag at 604-684-7561 into the studio. Get a schedule and plan out your
week, lotsa great stuff!

Now that the festival's over (whew!) I can catch up with the
playlists; as every year, the first Friday's show featured artists
playing in the first week of the festival - I was halfway through the
show before I got past the artists playing the first two nights and I
didn't even play any Herbie Hancock! Lotsa phone calls and scuttlebutt
(I got the call that Frisell had cancelled just as the last notes of
Grapevine were fading out), but overall great way to get into the
festival vibe .. N

the Guitar Summit (Three Much Guitar) at Cap College with Coon/Gannon/
Rud along with a Phil Dwyer gig sometime I forget now and some Juno
nominations, the tune that turned out to be the encore at the Return
to Forever gig and a Herbie preview. And some recent acquisitions - a
reissue of a Blue Note Lou Donaldson octet date with Wayne Shorter,
the Keith Jarrett Setting Standards box, Martial Solal at Newport, the
Duke with Betty. Hmmm, makes me want to go to the archive and
listen ... N

As promised (and as usual) for the last Friday's show of the Jazz
Fest, mainly featured artists performing at the festival through the
last weekend and the Nation's birthday natch (with a side detour to
Glory Glory Hallelujah). Not quite as frenzied as the week before with
not quite as many artists to cover but still ran out of time before I
played everything I wanted. Great fest this year! ... N

Just clearing out the pipe before leaving for holidays this week. A
nod to the passing of the great pianist Ronnie Mathews leading his own
trios and with the groups of Freddie Hubbard and T.S. Monk.

New release by Joe Baione, a vibes player with an affinity to Lem
Winchester (there's a player I haven't pulled out in a while). A
recent acquisition from Fern Lindzon, a pianist/singer from Toronto
whose debut release is very impressive, performing duets with some
heavy T.O. players - Don Thompson (on vibes), Reg Schwager and George
Koller - and definitely holding her own, highly recommended!

Two recent reissues of killer dates from Alvin Queen's Nilva 80s/90s
era label on Justin Time's reissue imprint, I never thought I'd see
those on CD! Now if they would only do Ray Drummond's Susanita!
Whatever happened to Manny Boyd anyway?

In recognition of the holiday south of the border, played Charlie
Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra - who would have thought to combine
America the Beautiful with Lift Every Voice and Sing and then top it
off with Ornette's Skies of America? (Carla Bley probably...)

And finished off with some fave artists from the fest, Satoko Fujii's
accordion band Gato Libre, a languid performance from Blake Tartare
and one of the critical hits of the festival - the virtuoso bassist
Renaud Garcia-Fons.

I'm on vacation for a couple of weeks with fill-ins from Marc Lindy
and Cory Weeds, drink lots of water and see you at the end of the
month ... N

Back at the helm after a couple of weeks on a desert island,
interspersed some Johnny Griffin faves (those Bud Powell dates
frinstance) with some artists appearing at the upcoming Festival
Vancouver (see http:www.festivalvancouver.ca for more details).
Upcoming FA shows include the Argentinian pianist Adrian Iaies, the
Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa, a tribute to Oscar Peterson
featuring the trios of Miles Black, Ross Taggart and Tilden Webb, and
Bill Charlap. Had a couple of other requests for FA artists but
unfortunately either didn't have any tunes or couldn't squeeze them in
- good response overall though. Finished up with a funky romp for the
late Joe Beck with James "He's too strong, we can't stop him - That's
because he's the Godfather" Brown in Hell.

Next week on the August 8th show, my guest in the studio will be Fred
Stride in advance of the August 12th Festival Vancouver concert Duke,
Dee and Me featuring his own music (from last year's Cellar Live
release Forward Motion), some of Duke Ellington's and Billy
Strayhorn's music and guest Dee Daniels. Should be fun, check it
out ... N

As promised, Vancouver-based composer and arranger Fred Stride came
down to the studio and brought down some of his favorites and I
brought down some faves, and we actually ending up bringing quite a
few things in common. You can tell we had a lot of fun talking since
we played comparatively few tunes (although some great ones), we
talked continuously off-air while the music was on and ended up
standing in the hallway for 20 minutes yakking after the show was
over.

Along the way we covered a lot about Fred's background, historical
tidbits and the contemporary state of writing for large ensembles. In
fact I had to keep reminding him to mention the nominal reason for his
visit, the upcoming concert that's part of Festival Vancouver
(tomorrow night now), viz:

==================================================

Duke, Dee and Me
Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at 8:00 pm • Christ Church Cathedral

Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra with special guest Dee Daniels

Fred Stride has spent the past 40 years honing his skills as a
composer and leader of large jazz ensembles, and Duke Ellington has
been one of his greatest influences and inspirations. He salutes his
muse with this concert, a celebration of Ellington’s works along with
a sampling of Stride’s own compositions for large jazz ensemble. Dee
Daniels adds the vocal icing to the cake, working with a superb 20-
piece group that includes Brad Turner (trumpet) and Ross Taggart
(saxophone). Expect to hear the exquisite Billy Strayhorn arrangement
of Ellington’s Come Sunday, and other great Ellington-inspired tunes.

==================================================

Although the radio show is not packaged up as a podcast, you can still
listen to mp3s which make up the show from the station archives, the
show starts about 28:20 into the Part 1 file:

Part 1 : http://cfro.virishi.net/mp3/t1218233286.mp3
Part 2 : http://cfro.virishi.net/mp3/t1218236886.mp3

Part 4 : http://cfro.virishi.net/mp3/t1218244085.mp3

Thanks to the folks who called and requested the playlist and thanks
to Fred Stride for coming down and contributing to such a fun show -
catch the Orchestra tomorrow night, should be even more fun; back on
Friday for more great tunes ... N

Thanks to my cooperative compatriot Ray Bolen for taking over for the
last hour of the show while I hustled off to catch a ferry (which I
didn't actually get on for 5 hours but that's another story).

Started off with the sinkable Darlene Edwards doing the theme, the
late Jo Stafford by any other name- it's not easy for a good singer to
sing that badly - didn't manage to get back to more G.I. Jo but I'll
have some cued up for next week. Fallen hero tributes as well to Bob
Florence and Isaac Hayes (with a Jimmy Webb mini-opera that doesn't
have anything to do with a cake out in the rain).

Featured a couple of recent releases which I've been enjoying - Larry
Vuckovich's inventive piano trio (sometimes quartet) hasn't strayed
too far from my player lately. Also Jeff Barone's guitar in a couple
of settings, an organ trio with Ron Oswanski on B3 and erstwhile
Vancouver-native Rudy Petschauer on drums, and in a guitar duet with
the under-appreciated (and under-recorded) Jack Wilkins. On other
tracks Joe Magnarelli and Mike Dubaniewicz turn in stellar
performances on trumpet and alto respectively but I wanted to feature
the guitars first time out, I'll be back to it. And Fern Lindzon's
disc which I've raved about before.

Upcoming shows - Brazilian Guitar Wizard Yamandu Costa finishing up
Festival Vancouver last Friday, Adi Braun at the Cellar next weekend
and Cory Weeds recording with special guest Jim Rotondi at the Cellar
last Friday/Saturday.

Had a good response to posting the archive links last week, here are
this week's mp3 files from the archive, the show starts about 24
minutes into the Part 1 file:

Part 1 : http://cfro.virishi.net/mp3/t1218838008.mp3
Part 2 : http://cfro.virishi.net/mp3/t1218841608.mp3

Part 4 : http://cfro.virishi.net/mp3/t1218848807.mp3

At the end of this coming Friday's show (Aug 22), I'll be subbing for
Blues Boy Bill on the Crossroads vintage blues program from 5:30 to
6:30 pm; I'm planning to feature the music of guitarists Lonnie
Johnson and Eddie Lang - Have to Change Keys to Play These Blues and
some other gems. Better tune it up .... Nou

A show to pull out some of the things that I've been wanting to get to
for the last few months. Great solo by the late Patti Bown on the Cal
Massey tune; tribute to G.I. Jo Stafford with some V-Discs etc., great
new disc by Tim Warfield dedicated to his former employer Shirley
Scott (a version of The Beat Goes On that superimposes The Sidewinder
without the tag, really cookin'!), Adi Braun at the Cellar this week,
Melody Diachun at the Nu (how do you spell that again?) every Sunday,
Jerry Granelli's V-16 coming in the fall etc.

Recently picked up a great series of Chris McGregor/Brotherhood of
Breath reissues on Fledg'ling out of the UK (see http://www.thebeesknees.com/?cat=10)
and I'll be featuring them extensively over the next couple of months
- started with a Dudu Pukwana composition from Brotherhood.

Had a bit of an extended show this week; Blues Boy Bill the usual host
of the country blues program Crossroads is on vacation this week and
asked me to fill in. I rubbed my hands with glee and said - great! a
chance to play all the 1928/29 Eddie Lang/Lonnie Johnson duets on one
show! Alas I took some detours, ran out of time, and missed the last 3
above - what I could do with another 10 minutes...

But I did have a couple of calls from people asking - OMG, what is
that? You can see what all the fuss is about with the links to this
week's mp3 files from the archive, the A-Trane show starts about 32
minutes into the Part 1 file and Crossroads starts about 32 minutes
into the Part 4 file:

tune in and find out ... .... Nou

Relaxed end of summer show this week ...

Started off with a rare 1954 Canadian Ducal performance of the Uptown
arrangement of A-Train with an early Ray Nance vocal and the Paul
Gonsalves cadenza, the cd finishes with a version of God Save the
(newly minted) Queen!

Headed to the Work Song for Labour Day, finished some old business
with the 3 Eddie Lang/Lonnie Johnson duets I didn't get to last week.
That led nicely into some Beiderbecke and the excellent new release by
Dick Hyman of music by and inspired by Bix - wonderful version of In a
Mist.

More recent releases by BJ Jansen, Tim Warfield and Jeff Barone, then
a South African interlude with a welcome new reissue of Masekela's
classic and a recently unearthed Chris McGregor (featuring John Surman
and Evan Parker) lovingly presented by Fledg'ling - would that the
Masekela were handled with this much attention to detail!

Thanks to Gavin for reminding me that it was Bird's birthday with a
related performance by Nancy King coming to the Cellar later this
month. And Lee Scratch Perry in town this weekend rounds out the show
and gets us ready for school, riddim come forward and sharpen those
pencils!

As promised, Kate Hammett-Vaughan was my guest in the studio for the
first half of the show. We ended up talking about her fall residency
at the Cellar, the upcoming tribute to Lambert, Hendricks and Ross on
September 10th (http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2897)
and Nancy King/Steve Christofferson's following weekend on the 12th/
13th (http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2898). Also
managed to feature a few tracks from Kate's recently released duet CD
with guitarist Bill Coon. Fortunately, we remained empowered (and had
fun) all the way through.

Recent releases from Ben Sidran (on Hammond B3!), Aaron Parks (a
pianist with a touch and sensibility that reminds me of Ethan Iverson)
and Bruno Hubert. Also an extended piece from the ongoing feature of
Chris McGregor recordings on Fledg'ling. I've had phone calls about
these every week, they're available in Canada from Verge Distribution
(http://www.vergemusic.com).

Other nods to upcoming shows, Fiamma Fumana with the Mondine di Novi
Choir (Oct 1st, see http://caravanworld.homestead.com/), Satoko Fujii
(CJBS upcoming) and Ian McDougall (last Saturday at the Cellar).

Stay in tune ... Nou

ongoing feature of Chris McGregor releases on Fledg'ling (fabulous
stuff) and a nod to the passing of Arne Domnerus at the Pawnshop last
week. New releases from Morgan Childs, and David Murray/Mal Waldron -
an interesting rephrasing of Miles' Jean-Pierre. Also noticed that
this week was the hundredth birthday of the great Raymond Scott! Who
knows what'll happen next week ....

Had a request from a friend for some Stuff Smith so I dug up some hot
Stuff to kick the show off. Upcoming shows over the next couple of
weeks James Danderfer & Saul Berson (Cellar), Jillian Lebeck
(O'Doul's) and Hadley Calliman/Thomas Marriott (Cross-border series at
the Cellar).

Over the last month I've been featuring a hot new recording by tenor
player Tim Warfield. He includes a performance of Duke Pearson's
Cristo Redentor which inspired me to dig up the original (by Donald
Byrd) and some old favorites by under-appreciated guitarist Harvey
Mandel.

Music films featured at the Vancouver International Film Festival (now
underway!) include:
Old Man Bebo - documentary about the incredible Cuban pianist Bebo
Valdes who turns 90 next month and who has a new recording from the
Village Vanguard to be released imminently. Bebo has lived the history
of Cuban music in the 20th century and this film follows his story
through a panoply of figures from Benny More to the members of the
Buena Vista Social Club to his son Chucho Valdes;
Youssou N'Dour: Return to Gorée - documentary about the Senegalese
connection to the slave trade told through a musical odyssey by
Youssou N'Dour;
Suden - documentary about the late avant-garde composer Mauricio
Kagel's return to his birthplace Argentina;
Gave away a pair of tickets to Suden, should have more tickets for
giveaway on next week's show.

Finally, there's a concert that I've been plugging for the last month
or so, and as it gets closer I've been getting more excited about it.
Next Wednesday October 1st at the Italian Cultural Centre is the
collaboration between Fiamma Fumana (just another Italian drum 'n bass
'n bagpipe band) and the Mondine di Novi Choir in a collaboration
called Di Madre in Figlia (From Mother to Daughter).

Here are a few video clips to whet your appetite:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEuW-twyg10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR1KWOgDwuc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU3QcsEbwZU

and see http://caravanworld.homestead.com/ for more concert details.
A documentary film of this collaboration just played the Toronto
International Film Festival, here's hoping it lands on these shores
soon as well.

Lots of stuff going on this week, Vancouver International Film
Festival is still going strong (gave away some tickets) and dotted
some soundtracks through the show for fun, with some Bebo Valdes
specifically aimed at the Old Man Bebo documentary at the festival.
Had a request for some Poll Winners which led to some other show
tunes. Cory Weeds called in to talk about the Cross Border Jazz series
copresented by the Cellar and Coastal Jazz & Blues which brought
Hadley Caliman and Tom Marriott to town this weekend – tentatively
half a dozen dates over the next year with Grant Stewart and Tardo
Hammer confirmed for November. Did a set around the new Kate Hammett-
Vaughan/Bill Coon CD with the release party at the Cellar this
Wednesday Oct 8th. And some other mixed bags, great new Ben Sidran
take on Dylan, and the two Gatos – Barbieri and Satoko Fujii’s
accordion band!

Also did a feature on the brand new Charlie Haden Family and Friends
release which reaches back before his emergence with Ornette Coleman
to the style of his family’s mid-west country radio show. There’s even
a short clip of two-year old Charlie warbling and yodeling his way
through a song back in 1939. It’s alternately a homespun (the family
voices) and a slick (the superstar friends) production; it probably
would have been stronger overall with some judicious editing but
anything that gives us back to back solos from Pat Metheny and Jerry
Douglas is definitely a keeper. Even Jack Black (a Haden son-in-law,
who knew?) puts in a surprisingly good take on Old Joe Clark! The
outstanding track though is The Fields of Athenry which features
daughter Petra Haden - the phone rang off the hook for that one – who
has been a favorite of mine since her remarkable solo (overdubbed)
acapella recording of The Who Sell Out a few years back. (Welcome to
my life tattoo!) After a few listens, even the rough edges have become
endearing – all in all an interesting visit home from one of the
music’s great wayfaring strangers.

Blues Boy Bill took the Crossroads to Kamloops this week and left me
the mule to ride, with an extra hour to stretch out with. Which was
almost enough ...

Started the show with a nod to the Canadian election this week (Vote
early, vote often!) and Coltrane's tribute to the voter who will
choose our next government. Louis Jordan made his case and Jon
Hendricks made the case for his man Dizzy, but Nikki channeled Ella's
correct choice. (We'll be singing the battle hymn of the republican
later in the month for the American election.)

Slipped in a Happy 91st Birthday tribute set to Monk, but also covered
upcoming shows of which there are quite a number. Javon Jackson with
Les McCann and John Stetch at the Cellar next weekend and this,
respectively. Ironworks shows from Ravish Momin/Trio Tarana this
weekend and Billy Bang and Jerry Granelli in separate shows cover next
weekend. Also slipped in some Jean Derome who is one of the special
guests for the NOW Orchestra's Hear It NOW performance at the
Roundhouse on November 7th.

Also, as promised, dug through some of my Laurie Anderson rarities
(her earliest mid-70s recordings and a piece from an unreleased
Vancouver show to her most recent single release) in gleeful
anticipation of her performance piece Homeland to be presented at the
Centre next Saturday October 18th. (There's trouble at the mine! Don't
wait, get your tix now!)

A few takes on In A Mist and finished with a dedication to Stephen
Harper.

Next week, first show of the Autumn Fundraiser and, as has become a
tradition, Trane to Train, taking the A-Trane to the Gospel Train with
stops at the Crossroads and the Claddagh Ring road from 2:30 til 9:30
pm. Here's a challenge to Vancouver musicians whose music I've played
in the last year to call and take out a membership, operators are
standing by ... N

As promised Grant Stewart and Tardo Hammer dropped by the studio for a
chat in advance of their appearance at the Cross-Border Jazz series at
the Cellar. We had fun talking about the series, Tadd Dameron, Elmo &
Bertha Hope and associated birthdays and tributes (see
http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/news.php?id=26471), Marian McPartland,
how Grant is secretly Canadian (quiet as it's kept), Frank Sinatra and
lots of other stuff.

Started playing some stuff that's been in the bag for a while but that
I hadn't gotten around to. Lots of fun and more to come!

December 5th to follow shortly ... N
