I'm not really a fan (so I hope I spelled his name right) but I just
heard on the radio that Rory Gallagher has died in hospital in London
after a failed liver transplant.

He passed away the morning of 6/13. A failed liver transplant (the surgery
was over a month ago) was the main cause... I was fortunate enough to meet
him, and speak with him many times by phone over the past 6 years - a very
sweet man, and a hell of a guitar player. He will be missed.

The acclaimed Irish blues guitarist, Rory Gallagher, died yesterday in
a
London hospital. Gallagher, who was 47, had been recovering from a
liver
transplant operation which he underwent earlier this year.

Over a highly successful 30 year career, Rory Gallagher sold 14 million
records worldwide and was one of the first Irish international rock
superstars.

He was born in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal but moved to Cork at an early
age.
He joined his first group, the Fontana showband, at the age of 15 but
only
came to prominence when he formed the group Taste three years later.

Taste recorded four albums together - the most famous of which was On
The
Boards (1970) - and they achieved considerable fame through their
explosive brand of rhythm and blues. After disbanding Taste, Gallagher
pursued a solo career and became a major star on the European music
circuit, most notably in Germany, with albums like Deuce (1973) and
Live
In Europe (1974).

While his career faltered slightly in the 80s, and he kept a very low
profile in the 90s, he was always acknowledged as a virtuoso guitarist
and
Irish bands who came in his wake, such as Thin Lizzy and U2, always
spoke
of him with the greatest of respect.

Rory Gallagher never married and lived alone in Chelsea, London. He
last
performed in Ireland at the Temple Bar Blues Festival in Dublin in
1992.

The editor of Hot Press music magazine, Niall Stokes, a personal friend
of
Gallagher's, paid him this tribute last night: ``Rory was one of the
greats, he was an enormous inspiration to a whole generation of people
who
fell in love with rock n'roll through hearing him and seeing him play.
I
don't think there's any way that any of the current success stories in
Irish rock would have happened without him.''

He had a lot of integrity and a complete devotion to making music that
was
authentic. He was a wonderful guitar player and an often underestimated
songwriter of great ability.''

I heard the news that Rory Gallagher died. It is a shame. If
you're a guitarist and don't know about his playing, then you've
missed out incredibly!! He had a very productive life i think,
lots of albums, some with his band "TASTE". Check 'em out,
seriously. Highly underrated. I'm really sick about his
passing, he was one of the greats. Keep on rockin', Rory!!!

Simple ..... Rory Gallagher is dead ..... RIP Rory .... We will
allways remember you .....

The only thing that we know is that Rory has a problem with his
liver... That was the reason ..

Actual cause of death was failure of liver transplant. Liver had to be
transplanted presumably because of cancer.

In other words, he drank himself to death.

Are you one of those imbiclies that believes every homosexual who dies of
cancer MUST by definition have had AIDS? Don't guess when you don't know!

Liver cancer is rarely caused by excessive drink.
More likely, in those circumstances is sclerrosis of the liver.

Like most cancers, the causes of liver cancer is unknown.

I have seen no reports saying that Rory died from cancer.
The reports I read mentioned liver failure. Rory was
a notorious alcoholic, which quite commonly leads to
liver problems.

Drink is not the only cause of liver-failure !!!!!!!

I saw him on telly about 2 yrs ago and he appeared very bloated. It looked like
he had an illness. This is not a condition that I associate with too much drink.

I expect that you are the sort of person who assumes that someone with lung-cancer
has only themselves to blame because of smoking.
Maybe when Thomas F Brown pops off this mortal coil due to illness, we can all
say that it was his own fault because he must have done something wrong to get
ill in the first place.
