Band Name: Chump Change (inspired by the money that we make)
Home Town: Austin, TX
Year that band was formed: 1993
# of Members: 4
Names and Instrument: Rick Colaluca, drums
John Fanelli, bass & vocals
Reedo, lead vocals
David Campbell, guitar & vocals
Brief Summary of type of music:
All-original funk hard rock with progressive/technical tendencies.
The closest similar bands are Living Colour, 24-7 Spyz, Infectious
Grooves, Rage Against the Machine, Primus, Fishbone, etc. The
basic foundation is funky drums and bass with heavy crunch guitar.
Vocals are sung or rapped as best fits the tune. Our style is
definately heavy but we regularly dip into funk, reggae, ska and
"freak out" music when the mood hits us. Fast ensemble runs,
unusual time signatures, and polyrhythmic grooves are common.
Brief History:
Made up of Austin club players, the most notable being Rick
Colaluca of Watchtower (on Noise International). We've played
opening slots for Flotsam & Jetsom and Mindfunk.
We're to catch us:
We play regularly in Austin, Houston, and Dallas. We are currently
playing and trying to build a following in Corpus Christi, El
Paso, and Baton Rouge. We look to be expanding to other parts
of Louisiana and Arkansas in the near future.
Future Plans:
Our debut independent CD is scheduled to be released in early
April. Email me if you want details.....
Basic Gear:
Guitars & Basses: Kramer, Hamer, and Charvel guitars. Ibanez
Soundgear six string basses.
Amps: ADA preamps, Tubeworks power amps, Gallien Krueger bass
amps, Ampeg guitar cabs and Peavey bass cabs.
Drums: Yamaha.
FX: Lexicon, Rocktron, BBE, Boss, Rockman, Kawai, Anatek, Nady,
Juice Goose, and Vox.

Well, for what it's worth, here's a descrip of the newest and most
amateur band you'll ever run across. I imagine this post the closest we'll
come to a moment of glory! ;)
Band Name: no final decision. top contenders include Haggis Rampant,
Wolf's Head, and Ossian's Ride.
Home Town: Somerville, MA
Year that band was formed: 1994
# of Members: 7, more or less
Names and Instrument: Carl Anderson, elec. guitar
Tox Donahue, elec. bass
Darcy Burner, keyboards
John Petronio, drums
Ben Cash, lead vocals
Tania Ruiz, back-up vocals
Elena O'Malley, back-up vocals
Brief Summary of type of music:
Hard to, say since we've only learned three cover songs so
far :) (Hawkwind "Quark, Strangeness & Charm", Levellers "Sell Out", and
BOC "Godzilla") and one original song written by myself and the bass player
which we haven't taught to the rest of the band yet! We anticipate playing
basic hard rock with dips into Celtic folk-rock and blues.
Brief History:
I played guitar, and knew the keyboardist from college. I
though I should get some of my musically inclined friends to make a band.
I got one friend to buy a bass and start learning it (!) and recruited his
roommate to sing. I knew the drummer from work--he's ten years older than
the rest of the band and actually has considerable skill, unlike the rest
of us, who sound like people equipped with powerful, if unfamiliar, musical
weapons :) The catalyst that brought us together was that many of us
are/were active with the Sci-Fi club at our college, which holds an annual
masquerade ball ...
Where to catch us:
Don't blink! We'll be playing our entire repetoire of 3
whole songs at the Harvard/Radcliffe Science-Fiction Association's Annual
Masquerade Ball, February 18th, in the Adams House Dining Hall. We're a
"special feature" in the middle of the dance--if you're very unlucky we
_might_ have an encore ready by then ... ;)
Future Plans:
Well, after our "gig" :) we intend to continue learning
new covers and writing some more original songs. When we get enough
together to go for an hour or so, we'll look for space to give free
concerts to our unfortunate friends, and their friends. Maybe if we decide
we don't really suck that badly, we'll record a demo tape in the college
studios ...
Basic Gear:
Guitar: Charvel, Peavey amp
Bass: Fame, Peavey amp
Keyboard: Roland D-10, Crate amp
Drums: Ludwig, Zildijan cymbals
Mic: an Audio Technica and something else ...
By the way, if anyone has a reasonably good used mic they'd
like to sell, we could use another one ...
With the possible exception of the drums, all our gear was
the best deal we could find on used equipment (on the grounds of "our sound
is defined by whatever we can afford :) In fact, our bass player got hi
bass on the grounds that it was the only lefty bass he found in his price
range at all ...
Cheers,
Carl

PROFILE OF BAND (that I'm a member of)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Band Name: David Victor (that was the hardest part!)
Home Town: Danville, CA
Year that band was formed: 1994
# of Members: 1
Names and Instrument: Guitar, Vocals - David Victor
Bass & Keys - Roland JV-880
Drummer - Roland R-5
Vocals - Digitech VHM-II, Peavey SP
Conductor - Roland Sound Brush; cranky 486
Brief History:
Thought this would be fun to try, though it's a MIDI nightmare! One of
the best *sounding* bands I've ever been in! I was going to work with
a bass player and a drummer and just sequence the keys, but the chemistry
wasn't right, and the bass player left to join a big-hair band. The
drummer didn't think we could pull it off with only two band members, so
I thought it would be a kick to see if I could do it all with just one.
So far, so good!
Brief Summary of type of music and some covers:
Straitforward guitar-based pop! Music sounds like Bryan Adams, Journey,
all rmi's worst nightmares come true!! ;-)
Basic Gear: Too much junk to list (and probably boring to everyone!)
Band Name: Marshall Law
Home Town: McHenry, Il
Year Formed: Summer '92
Members: 5
Names & Instruments:
Michael Berry: Guitars/vocals
Tim Michael: Guitars
Chris "Fitz" Fitzgerald: Bass
Dave Doyle: Drums
Delton "D" Robbins: Vocals
Brief History:
Band was originaly formed in summer of '92. Two drummers and one bass
player later bring the personnel list up to date. We bill ourselves as "Classic
Rock" and cover a little of everything from Aerosmith to Hendrix to ZZ Top. We
currently perform almost strictly covers from an ever changing set list of about
50-60 tunes and try to add current popular stuff when we can. We each have a
portfolio of our own original material, but it varys so much in style that it
is difficult to develop and we are all perfectly happy doing covers anyway
(that's what the people are paying to hear).
Equipment:
M. Berry: '90 Strat plus & Hamer guitars, Marshall 2x12x100w amp
T. Michael: '79 strat & '76 SG guitars, Fender power chorus amp
Fitz: Squire bass guitar, Laney 300w amp and a *very heavy* cabinet
D. Doyle: Don't remember what kind but they're black and loud
D. Robbins: His own voice and a variety of tambourines, shakers, etc...
PA system: Peavy 6 chan amp and Ross hurricane speakers
Where to catch us:
We currently perform at a variety of small clubs in the north and
northwest suburbs of Chicago. Come out and party with "The Law", it's
always a great time! Call Tim at 815 344 9164 for further details.
Nonsense!! Hadn't he ever heard of Bevis Frond? Random English
band with Nick Saloman who plays everything except the drums which are
played by a friend of his. When they tour, they find friends from other
bands who aren't busy at the moment to fill in on the other parts.
They have a multi-album recording career built on two guys. I
kinda like them, too :)
Names and Instrument:
-Ted James -- acoustic and electric guitars, bass
-Robert Hembrook -- bass, occasional screaming
-George Pestana -- drums, percussion, foot
-Vocals - We've been through five singers. Some flaked out. Some ended
up not having the time or the drive to make this work. We've resigned
ourselves to becoming an instrumental band. I guess you could call my
girlfriend our fourth member as she provides moral support and food.
Brief History:
I posted an ad on the local net looking for people to jam with. That's
when I met up with George and Robert. We jammed all summer to various
styles including jazz, rock, blues, and country. During that time, we
managed to write the rhythm tracks for a few songs. After going through
a few singers that either flaked out or just plain didn't bother to show
up, we decided to become an instrumental band. We concentrated on
several standards such as All of Me and Satin Doll. We began to move
into surf-style music a la Dick Dale and Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.
We also have been working on some other rock-oriented songs. We now
have eight or so songs down including four originals. We've played live
twice. Once was at an open mike. The other was opening for San
Antonio's Youngin' (formerly The Smear). When we get about 15 to 20
songs down, we hope to start playing occasional gigs in and around Austin.
Brief Summary of type of music and some covers:
Surf, rock, and jazz instrumentals. We do a cool medley of the Munsters,
Ghost Riders in the Sky, and Pipeline. We're also covering REM's only
surf song, White Tornado. Only we've altered it a bit. We're also
working on some Ellington standards. I want to mix in some other
instrumental covers by the Reivers and Dick Dale until we can get more
written. If we ever find a reliable singer, then we'll start playing
vocal music as well as instrumentals.
Basic Gear:
-Guitar: Fender Telecaster Thinline, standard Fender Telecaster, Fender
112 Super Reverb, Mesa/Boogie Studio .22, Boss Chorus, Ratt distortion,
eventually I'll get a Rotovibe.
-Bass: Westone five-string, Hartke cabinet
-Drums: Pearl standard set with additional roto-toms and bongos
I'd like to add a sax, keyboard, or trombone eventually. Any takers?

bass player Bass
Brief, Brief, History
Me and my best friend had wanted to be in a band since we were little.
In the beginning, when we were 10, we used pots and pans fro drums and a
3 string ukalale. We never really produced a song. Last year tho, i got a
guitar and he got drums. We are still looking for a bas player tho. A
couple of weeks ago we saw a girl at the Cougars hockey game and i thought
she looked like the perfect bass player. I will have to find out her name
and then ask her to be part of our band.
Summary of music
Well, i am into the Shadowy men on a Shadowy planet. I like them because they
have no vocals just like us.<well little vocals> I also like the tragically hip and many undiscovered bands.
Basic Gear
I have a 1958 fender guitar. It was used by the lead guitarist in Anne Murray's
band. I have a image amp. The drummer has a drum set, i really haven't looked
at the name of them yet.
Fortunately you can't see us play. The only people to hear us yet are our
parents. But if anything happens, i might post something.

Since there is yet to be input to this thread from this side of the
Atlantic, here goes:
Band Name: Stiltskin (yes, as in Rumpelstiltskin)
Home Town: Edinburgh
Dawn of Time: December 1991
Members: 4
Vocals / Rhythm guitar: Simon Coote ( Cy )
Lead guitar: Neil Gall ( Wheel ) - that's me
Bass: Mark Hamilton
Drums: Dave Magnus Knight
Brief History:
I jammed with two other guys and Dave, our drummer, for
about a year before Stiltskin were formed. When I moved
into a flat with three other long-haired heavily-drinking
student louts in 1991 I met Cy and Mark through my new
flatmates. We all met (in the pub) and went "let's form
a band !"
We had a fairly good idea of what we wanted to do then:
classic British Heavy Metal a la Black Sabbath, Saxon,
Iron Maiden, Motorhead. All four of us were (still are)
big fans of this genre.
We started booking lecture rooms at Heriot-Watt university
in Edinburgh every Saturday afternoon and practiced
constantly for about six months, writing about five of
out own songs and learning innumerable covers.
We played our first gig on 17 November 1992 (the day after
my 21st birthday) in the Edinburgh Uni student union.
Last summer we recorded a 4-track demo of (at the time)
all our own material. We are currently gigging fairly
frequently in Edinburgh.
Musical Background:
Mostly covered above, but we're not entirely British Rock
puritans :-) Metallica and Trouble are two American
bands which I would say have a fair bit of influence on
us. Covers include:
Symptom of the Universe - Sabbath
Supernaut - Sabbath
Prowler - Maiden
The Trooper - Maiden
Killed by Death - Motorhead
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica
The Eagle has Landed - Saxon
Black Night - Deep Purple
Wasted - Def Leppard
Hell Bent for Leather - Judas Priest *
* next one to be learnt !
Our own material has a definite leaning in this direction
with a decent abount of Celtic imagery thrown in by Cy.
Songs such as Drums of War, Wickerman, Wildman of Song,
Zombie Brain Syndrome (instrumental) and Sticks & Stones
have taken on an almost classic status amongst our friends :-)
Equipment:
Lead: Tokai Custom Edition superstrat-type
Washburn AV-20 - what a body shape !
Laney Linebacker 50R (classic British sound)
Rocktek 6-band EQ in effects loop for a phenomonal
lead boost. DOD Stereo Chorus, Whatsisname Compressor,
Jim Dunlop 2mm Stubby picks.
Rhythm: Tokai Custom strat-type guitar
1970's Marshall JCM 50 watt 2x12"
RAT distortion
Bass: Mark's got about a gazillion basses; mainly
a Yamaha 5-string of some description.
Peavy 75 watt - that's about all I know
DOD Classic Fuzz for Drums of War (hehe!)
Drums: Yellow. Loud.
Other stuff we want to do/say:
Be more metal than everyone else. Put together.
Don't give a flying fuck what anyone thinks; we do what
we want to do.
Interesting Anecdotes:
* Dave played part of a gig with about 1/2" thich branches
off a tree for drumsticks once (bark and all).
* We share a practice room with some skinheads who call
themselves Smother Fucker.
* "What's your band called, Neil ?"
"Stiltskin."
"Oh, as in Rumpel ?"
"Yes."
* "And now a band who claim to be the most metal band
in the world... Stiltskin !"
- introduction by Ian Simpson (Simmy) at
Teviot Union, December 1992
* Bags full of leads, pedals, etc are universally known
as "bags of cack".
* All the amps, guitars, bags of cack, all the cymbal
stands, snare stand, drum stool, snare and cymbals
plus the four of us fit in my Vauxhall Astra (Opel
Kadett for Europeanss, about the size of a Ford Escort
for others).
* Ronnie is our number one fan. He's now missed three
gigs, so we may have to pass the title on to someone else.

Name of band: the 'tones
Personnel: Ralph D'Andrea, guitar
Larry Fukui, bass
Darrell McKay, Drums
Fred Horn, keys
(all sing)
Home Base: Grand Junction, Colorado
Inception: 1985
Bag: Classic Rock, mainly, although very eclectic-James Brown through
ZZ Top
History: Ralph was a retired rock'n roller making damned good money
as a geologist with a government contractor. His wife grew tired of hearing
him say, "I used to be better than that guy" so she decided to make him shit or
get off the pot. On the night of his 35th birthday, she hired a hall and
called every musician or ex-musician either of them knew for a mammoth jam
session. The rest is history. The band was originally founded under the
name "The Simpletones" because nobody knew more than 3 chords. However,
the expense of putting such a long name on business cards became prohibitive
and the name was soon shortened. The group quickly became the darlings of
the over 40 set in this small western Colorado town, particularly after
its memorable version of "Shout" caused the Grand Junction Lion's Club to
dance on the tables one night at the local Holiday Inn.
The band has been through a number of lineup, instrumentation, and personnel
changes. Larry and Ralph are the only founders left. We have been through
at least 5 drummers, although (sadly) none of them have exploded on stage.
Most recently, we added a killer keyboard player in an effort to recreate
the exciting Farfisa minicombo organ sound of the '60s. It worked.
Our repertoire includes about 160 songs from 1953 through present, about
60 of which are active at any one time. We mix and match for our audience.
We are strictly weekend warriors, playing private parties only (no bars).
We get paid well when we play. Needless to say, we don't play often
(but we don't need the money).
Equipment: Strats, Les Pauls, Danelectro, P-, J-, Peavey, and Rick basses,
old Fender guitar amps (although I build 'em too), Peavy bass amp,
CS-800, various Roland keyboards, etc. Nothing special.
Plans: Get fat, get old, play Hendrix for the other folks at the
nursing home when we land there ourselves. Teach our kids r 'n r.
Hire through: The e-mail address at the top of this letter. We'll travel,
but it'll cost ya.
Band Name: Dreamer
Home Town: Palm Bay, FL
Year that band was formed: 1983
# of Members: 5
Names and Instrument: Anita Cotti -- Lead Vocals, various shakey stuff
Bruce Cotti -- Drums, Lead and Backing Vocals
Phil Trofibio -- Keyboards, Lead and Backing Vocals
Carl Van Acken -- Bass, Lead and Backing Vocals
And me, Michael Porter -- Guitar, Bass, Keys, L.& B. Vocals
Brief Summary of type of music:
We are a Top-40 dance band, but we play a pretty big variety of
copy stuff. Everything from Whitney Houston to Whitesnake,
the Costers to Dwight Yokum to Barbara Striesand to Stevie Ray
to -- well, you get the idea. I've been with them for ten years,
so we've had some time to get a fairly extensive songlist.
We play a variety of events, from rock clubs to disco to semi-
"upscale" things, like wedding receptions, convetions, company
Cristmas parties. Our forte' is our chameleon-like ability to
adapt to most situations. You know how agents usually screw up
and book the wrong band for the job; well, we usually turn it
around and pull it off, no matter WHAT happens.
Brief History:
The band was put together by the drummer and keyboardist. The
vocalist joined a year later (and ended up marrying the drummer,
who originally voted against hiring her ;^). I joined after they
rid themselves of a bassist/guitarist who *occasionally* showed
up. We went through nine bassists in six years (!), then I picked
my fretlees bass, and Phil re-wrote some programs on his Prophet
2000 Sampler, and we covered the bass lines ourselves for three
years. It worked, and we made a SURPRIZING amount of music for
essentially a three-piece band; however, Phil and I were busy as
one-armed paper hangers! We hired Carl about a year ago, and he's
just odd enough to fit in this band. The drummer's into big-
band jazz, the keyboardist's a lounge lizard, the singer's into
crooners, I'm into ProgRock, and the bassist doesn't care.
With these backgrounds, we have the ability to do a lot of
different things, if we don't kill each other...
Where to catch us:
We keep pretty busy playing a couple of clubs from Vero Beach to
Cocoa Beach (with occasional forays into Orlando, like this
coming weekend) with names like Molly's, Eddie's, and The No Name
Bar.
Future Plans:
None. This band doesn't have an original thought in it's collective
brain. I've started a ProgRock band on the side (barely) to have
an outlet for my creative side.
Basic Gear:
Guitars & Basses: Fender Strats, Gibson, Hamer, Ibanez guitars.
Gibson and Aria bassas, and a Yamaha acoustic.
Amps: Pearce G-1 guitar amp, and a Galleon-Krueger bass amp.
*NO* cabinets; Everything runs Direct, even the drums.
Drums: Roland TDE-7 electronic set, plus Octopads.
FX: Roland Echo and an Alesis reverb. All of us have our own FX
for the instruments.
Others: 4 Monitors, 2 Peavey 3020s bi-amped for mains, and a Sunn
programmable lighting system (which the singer operates
with an ADA Midi pedal). We have a 16-channel board, but
the Keyboardist mixes the keys himself, since we run sound
from the stage.
================================================================================I must say, this is kind of interesting, reading these band resumes. You really
start getting a handle on where everybody that you've been talking to is
coming from.
---Michael...
Names:
Becky Ott - vocals
Jason Goldman - guitar, vocals
Jim Burrell - guitar
Alex Neudeck - bass
John Hof - drums, vocals
Mike Bevers - sound guy
Music:
Crash the Buick is a classic rock band. We cover artists like Neil
Young, REO Speedwagon, Jefferson Airplane, Tom Petty, and Melissa
Etheridge. We also play a great list of originals.
History:
I was brought in to replace their previous guitar player/singer.
While classic rock wasn't my first choice, the fact that they were
willing to play my originals carried alot of weight. After I joined,
we brought back the old guitarist for a while. After he left, we
finally got Becky on lead vocal. Trust me, she sings *ALOT* better
than I do;-).
My history: I've played in rock bands, a reggae band, a jazz band, a
punk band, a couple of duos, and lots of solo gigs. This is the
first time I've ever played "Smoke On The Water" in a band;').
Equipment:
I play a Vantage Avenger (twin humbucker solid body) and an ES-335
through a Digitech GSP-21 into a Peavy Musician head/Fender 4x12 cab.
Jim plays a Fender Strat into a Fender amp (I forget what kind). His
main effect is a wahwah.
Alex plays a Fender Squire bass (I think).
I have no idea what kind of drums John has.
Plans:
Well, we need to get out alot more. I've started a duo on the side
to get another outlet. We all have day jobs, so the LA scene is
safe.
Band Name: Lemming
Home: Ames, IA
Band formed: We've been together for more or less 3 years.
Names: (well this could be changing soon)
Jason - vocals
Nigel(Neil) - guitar
Dana - guitar
Naught(Mike) - bass, vocals, songwriting
Flip(Aaron) - drums, vocals
Wolf - new bassist/sound guy
(Jason may be leaving us soon after graduation from ISU, so we're thinking
about switching Naught(Mike) to just vocals and having Wolf play bass)
Music:
We are and strive to be 100% original. We have been known to play
a cover or 2 during a set in the past, but our best music
is our original stuff.
Some Songs We use to Cover:
Where is my Mind -- The Pixies
State of Love and Trust -- Pearl Jam
Rockin' in the Free World -- Neil Young
Strength -- The Gear Daddies
Shoplifters of the World -- The Smiths
Grey Cell Green -- Ned's Atomic Dustbin
etc etc etc......... we were into obscure Alternative covers....
Some Titles of the Songs on our First Tape:
Hey Spacey (this is the set ender/ it rocks!)
All the World is an Ashtray
Today <-- (not to be confused w/ Smashing Pumpkins version
in fact, I believe ours was done before theirs)
Bad Apple
Misery
Bruise (not on our first tape, but it rewls!)
Another Friend
Open Confidence
Centipede
-- and a few more I can't think of.
I would guess we have about 12 new songs that weren't put on the
Bigr Than a Bred Bocks tape. For the most part the new ones are
all better :)
History: Well, how bout just the history I can remember :)
The band started out with 5 people, 2 of which are no longer around. We
switched lead singers and lost 1 guitarist. We played with 4, me being
the only guitarist for over a year.
We cut our first tape this last summer. Our bassist works at
the M-Shop (a local bar) so we used his resources to help us.
We set up for a live show and mixed from the Shop's 24 track mixer down
to a DAT deck. It sounded decent enough so we went ahead and ordered
400 tapes and dubbed them up ourselves. We got the liner printed up
locally and have since been selling them at our shows.
We haven't gotten out of Ames as of yet. We have played People's
Bar and Grill twice, played Lumpy's once and the M-Shop twice. The
second time we played at the M-Shop we opened for House of Large Sizes!
It was a sold out show and simply was the funnest time I've ever had
at a show. This was about 3 weeks ago and House had just signed with
Red Decibel records (an offspring of Columbia), so we were pretty
excited to be opening for them :) We are looking into getting a
booking agent so we can psuedo-tour around the midwest. (Any advice
would be apprieciated)
Right now we are incorporating 2 new members into our band. Since
Jason will be leaving ISU when he graduates we needed a new lead singer.
So Mike is taking over that job. We got Wolf to play bass for us and
Dana joins me as another Guitarist. From our last couple of rehearsals
it sounds like we will be much better :)
My history: I've only been playing guitar for about 3 1/2 years now. Being
in a band 3 of those years has accelerated my skill development. :)
I am totally self taught (no formal lessons anyway) and from what everyone
else says, I seem to have developed my own style.
Equipment:
Nigel (Me) -- 1992 Black Samick "Les Paul" Copy (it's really not that bad)
-- Peavey Bandit 65 amp (getting a new Marshall soon :))
-- ART SGX 2000 Effects Processor
-- X-15 Foot Controller
-- Samson Stage 22 Wireless
-- And a Furman sitting in the top slot of my SKB rack :)
Naught(Bass) -- Westone Bass (not sure what model)
-- GK 400(i think) amp , much better than his old Sunn
-- Some kind of Peavey 12 band equalizer
-- Peavey 1812 cabinet (1 18", and 2 12")
Dana(Guitar) -- PRS Custom (the one with the Dove's) (I'm Jealous)
-- Fender Head (not sure of kind or specs)
-- GK 2x12 cabinet
-- Boss effects pedal (not sure here either)
Wolf(Bass) -- Fender P Bass
-- Peavey Head
-- Ampeg Cabinet
Flip(Drums) -- Not real sure of Drums (real old but sound great)
-- Mostly Paiste Cymbols
Plans: We plan on doing our next tape in the studio and getting a CD
pressed. Along with this new CD we hope to be touring around the
midwest, and who knows maybe a bit further out. Other than that we hope
to be churning out original music and having as much fun as physically
possible.
If you want a copy of our tape, e-mail me and I'll see what I can do. :)

Stuff we play: Anything you don't normally hear from a bar band.
History:
Pete is the one that got the different, and I mean DIFFERENT people together
to start this band. Pete comes from a slightly alternative background, Diane
is a thrash/heavy metal head, Chris is Captain Regae, Steve is a Punk drummer,
I'm big into folk and progressive rock (Yes, Tull, ELP...), Mike was born a
decade too late and missed the 70's, and Kevin is an ecclectic mix of all of
the above... the more obscure the better <g>.
It started out with just Pete, Diane, Chris and myself playing covers.. a
couple of Tull songs, a Marley tune, a couple songs by They Might Be Giants...
a mix of everything from everyone's background. We picked up Kevin and his
flute after a couple of months and that added a lot to our sound.. he's a great
improvisationalist, even if he doesn't know it.
Another band in the area broke up and we jumped at the chance to give Mike
something to do with his time and he was happy to join, making us one of the
bigger ensembles in the area (Seven people! Yikes!). We've been playing
together for just over a year, but unfortunately Diane is graduating at the end
of this year and is going to be moving away, leaving us nursing the loss of a
great vocalist (wadda voice!).
We've started writing originals and having some success with them. Even
though we all have different musical backgrounds, we all have something to add
to a song that combines well with the other elements. We scare ourselves
regularly 8-) ("I would have NEVER thought of putting a bass line like that in
there! Great job, Chris!" "Um, I couldn't think of anything else that would
fit?")
We sometimes get paid, mostly if we play for large organized events (We've
played on campus once and out at the local state park once, both school
functions). Mostly we just love to play and don't care much if we don't get
paid for playing at a friend's party, just as long as our expenses are covered.
I describe us as less of a dance band, and more of a sit down and listen
band. We play music that we enjoy LISTENING to and playing. Since we didn't
start with making money as our main goal, we were able to do this and keep
ourselves happy.
Equipment: We don't have money. Period. We use what we've got to
the best of our ability and get away with... for one gig
we planned on stealing a garbage can from next door and putting
it back when we were done.
Don't ask me about drums. You hit 'em with a stick, thats
all I know. Steve's got two toms, a snare, a high hat, a ride
cymbal, a crash cymbal, tamborine, cow bell, and a bass drum.
We also use anything thats not bolted down as percussion
including bean cans, wood pieces, and a sliding screen played
by itself or with a comb/brush.
Mine: Fender Gemini II acoustic, GK Backline100 amp.
Mike: Fender LaBrea Acoustic with a Dean Markly pickup,
Fender Amp.
Chris: Homemade bass. GK amp with homemade cabinet.
Mixing board: Something on loan that was made before
I was born (Thanks Imani!).
Speakers:Two EV 100Watt speakers, two homemade monitors
(Thanks again Chris!)
Plans: We're playing a benefit concert with another local band here this
coming weekend for the Calumet Theater in Calumet Michigan. After that, who
knows. We might pack it in so that the graduating people can spend their time
studying and looking for jobs, we might also keep going as best we can...
We've got a couple of songs at the college radio station that have been getting
airplay lately, maybe we'll keep going if it doesn't seem to be a quickly
passing fad.
Come up and see us sometime! 8-)

When "wide open spaces" brings parking to mind, die.
Personnel: Ron Hart, guitar, keyboards, vocals, flute, sax, percussion
Eugene Bowser, guitar, vocals
Beth Ireland, bass, vocals
Bruce Perez, drums, vocals
Location: Utica, NY
Inception: 1993
Music: I suppose alternative with a hard country twist
History:
I started the band in January of 1993, with the guitar player
and myself. We have been thru two drummers and recently aquired a bass player,
who adds to are effort a great deal. We play all our own stuff with the
exception of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", anyone remember that one.
:-) I have been blessed with aquiring great personnel. They writing is
outstanding, I mean like real good. The music we have had to work on since
this is the first time we have tried to play music. After one year we are
moving real quick and hope to have a good recording this summer. Although our
music is quite simple, our sound is quite unique. I pin that on our
non-traditional learning method, which is: "Pick it up and Play IT."
Are only "weak link" is our drummer. I don't ever think we will
find someone who is as as serious as us. The important thing about are band is
we have all benn good friends for a long time. Are music is very personal, and
letting a "stranger" in is not an option.
Thanks for reading,
Ronny
Home Base: Chelsea, MI (Just west of ANN ARBOR)
Inception: 1989
Music: Heavy Metal - in the thrash/power style ala Sepultura,
Pantera, Anthrax with some Maiden/Sabbath influences and
twists ala Anacrusis.
Band History: Battalion plays all original music. Most tunes are started by
one of us then finalized as a group. We play out as often as
we can in Michigan, Ohio, Illionios, and Pennslyvania.
We have two demos completed - "BATTALION" and our latest
"EXCESSIVE FORCE". Sales of our first demo were pretty good.
The next demo has not yet been widely released due to lack of
cash. We hope to raise the money soon or beg for charitable
contributions.
My history: I have been playing guitar for 11 years. Only really got
serious about playing and learning about 6 years ago. I
noodled around with some friends in basement bands, until
forming BATTALION in 1989. While I love to play/listen to
metal, I also enjoy a variety of other musical styles (jazz,
country, classical, new age), especially if they feature
great guitar playing. Currently I'm listening to alot of
technical/progress metal/death stuff like Athiest, Cynic,
Carcass along with old favorites Al DiMeola and Paco DeLucia.
Equipment: Chuck - Marshall (hey, what do ya know!) amp,
Ibanez 540s guitars, Digitech effects
Tony - Hartke amp, Ibanez guitar
Kevin - Peavey amp, Charvel/Jackson guitars
Bill - Pearl drums, Paiste cymbals
Lee - what ever he can get his hands on
Plans/goals: Distribute new demo "EXCESSIVE FORCE". Play where ever we can
and actually get paid for it (that would be a new concept for us).
Get signed by a major label, have one member of the band OD and
be elevated to worship status. Grow old with long hair.

Brief Summary of type of music:
The Flu is an original guitar pop rock band in the Crowded
House/Midnight Oil/Elvis Costello/Blue Rodeo vein. The Neurotics is a
schtick-laden 60's and 70's cover band with weird wigs, fake Liverpool
accents, and better-paying gigs. In each case, we all sing lead at some
point or another. Plenty o' harmonies.
Brief History:
Sebastien, Alistair, and I were in a very bad cover band called The Juan
Valdez Memorial R&B Ensemble starting in '89. Al left in '90, and the band
changed into The Love Bugs, which survived until the spring of '93 and had
minor success playing college gigs and a Sunday night house gig in
Vancouver. In mid-'92, Seb, Al, our friend Dennis, and I started The Flu,
writing songs in our basement, and gigging first at a place called Sandy
Cove in West Vancouver on January 2, 1993. We've played the usual original
venues around Vancouver, but nowhere else yet. Dennis (married,
high-pressure job) left last summer and was replaced last fall by Dirk, who
had the name The Neurotics from his previous cover/originals band. We took
the name for our cover gig. We are currently planning on going full-time
with the two bands in mid-May.
Where to catch us:
Currently, only around Vancouver, but anywhere we can get. We plan a
brief Western Canadian tour this summer, and may dip into the States, and
possibly jaunt to Hawaii. Also, we do some street busking to attract fans
and make money.
Future Plans:
As I said, full time by May, a CD or two cassettes out in April, and a
live of starving musicianship.
Basic Gear:
Guitars & Basses: Fender STARcasters (two!), Fender Strat, Rick 360.
Amps: Vox Buckingham & AC30, Mesa Trem-o-Verb, Fender silverface
Super Reverb & Princeton Reverb, SWR Studio 220 bass amp & Fender
cab.
Drums: CB Percussion kick & toms, Pearl free-floating maple snare, Sabian
cymbals, Pearl & Tama hardware, Remo heads. No electronics.
FX: Used to have a Boss ME-10 on the guitar. Now use Boss Overdrive, Ibanez
Tube Screamer, Dunlop Cry-Baby Wah, and sometimes a Mesa V-Twin preamp.
Others: Usually house systems, but Dirk has a 12-channel Yorkville powered
mixer, small Elite mains, and a Peavey second power amp. Shure
mikes.
Oh, and Twizzlers. We always give out free Twizzlers at our shows.

History/Trivia: The band was formed two months (yep) ago. Basically, I
had made a name for myself locally as a solo acoustic
performer, for the songs, the voice & playing guitar much
harder than should be allowed. I won awards, etc. and was
gigging, but kept trying to explain that what I *really*
wanted was to be playing w/a band again. I formed a band
last year, Dimestore Genies, but it fell apart as I was
about the only one actually interested in playing,
rehearsing, etc. <sigh>
Back to the acoustic gigs, and put out feelers for more
players, for a trio this time.
My friend Dillon calls up -- formerly of local
semi-legends Lyrics for Lunch; he and the drummer from his
just-broken-up funk-rock band were interested in jamming
with me. The combination seemed bizarre... but since
we've all played in bands playing about every style of
music you could name, from Metal to Classic Rock to
Alternative-whatever... it just worked. We played our
first gig 2 weeks later.
At the moment, we're playing around Miami & Ft.
Lauderdale, and we'll be in the studio in the next couple
of weeks cutting demos. In the next couple of months
we should be doing some weekends in Tampa and/or Orlando,
and we'll head up the East Coast for a week or so this
summer.
Anyway, comparisons have been made (personally, I never
know how to describe what I do -- not objective at all) to
Smashing Pumpkins, Lemonheads, Replacements... makes
sense, basically the same influences. I dunno.
Basically, energetic, melodic rock with some twists and
turns. Life is too short for boring music.
