I'm going to be dropping my Earthlink account--I've had it with the
level of spam and, now, "Bob jobs" on that account.

I'll be using some sort of spam trap address once I set it up, and it'll
be obvious that it's me.

I've developed a "pop up" problem that makes me want to set this PC out on
the curb.

Go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html and download
AdAware. It will scan your machine for spyware and remove
the offending software. This will probably cure your
problem, which is probably caused by Bonzai or some similar
spyware. Probably got it from Kazaa.

Thanks Odin, I'll give it a try.

There's a recent spammer trick of using the Windows messaging service to
induce a pop-up. I don't believe you can turn it off*, and Optimum On-
line doesn't provide a cable modem with in-built packet filtering.

Carl could run a personal firewall for $50 and probably deal with it
that way.

*I'm not a Windows systems guy, so I may have goofed some detail here.

I use both Mailwasher and AdAware - both are good, they do different things.
I also use a freeware popup killer called NoAds from South Bay Software -
http://www.southbaypc.com/

Just be careful with the popup killer not to add pages you don't want to
kill. My wife added her startup page and then Internet Explorer wouldn't
load. No Ads can be disabled and pages added by accident can be removed. It
has an auto update feature to get targeted ads from their database in
addition to those you add on your own.

I think changing your provider for a new email address will just prolong the
agony until it gets to this point again. One more reason to not Yahoo.

No, but I'm looking at now.

Part of it is I'm using two providers now and I'd like to retire
earthlink.

Get a popup blocker. I've been happy since I invested in Popup Dummy
(shareware that cost me $18 IIRC). Every once in a while something gets by
it, but it's rare. It does have a bit of a false positive problem so I do
find I have to override it but that's no big deal--just hold down the control
key.

I think I'm going to. I tried the thing Odin suggested, but I'm still
getting them....not quite as often.

Firewalls rarely prevent pop-ups because most Windows users
get their pop-ups from spyware that was piggybacked onto
some other application (like Kazaa). But if you want a
firewall you won't do any better than Zone Alarm, and it's
free for single users.

Then go here http://www.panicware.com/product_downloads.html
and get a FREE pop-up stopper software. Be advised that it
will stop *all* pop-ups, so be prepared to disable it
sometimes when you want to see a pup up window on a website.
It's easy to disable, just click on the taskbar icon and it
disables then click it again and it restarts.

It's even easier to disable than that. Hold the CTRL key down and then click
on the link that gives you the desired popup. This will temporarily allow
popups.

Use Kazaalite instead of regular Kazaa. Download Kazaalite from the old kazaa
before you delete it. Also download and use Zone Alarm (free). It's a
firewall that within a day can stop all the spyware.

Popup Dummy seems to eliminate nearly all popups and it gives you a nice list
of the sits that have been getting you. I still get nailed once in a while
mostly by sites that require me to override the blocker to get at their
content, i.e., ones that have a lot of legitimate popups (if any could be
called legitimate).

But I don't use instant messaging or the like and stay away from sites that
are notorious for aggressive popups.

Hmmm, thanks for the tip. I need to put a blocker on my other computer.

MailWasher (www.mailwasher.net) does a great job of
tagging/deleting spam before you even download it. It uses lists
of known spam IP addresses, updated constantly.

Might even be able to rescue your Earthlink acct with it.

Someone else also mentioned this, and I've been using it for a day or
two. I agree it's very nice, and thanks for the tip.

I'll probably still ditch Earthlink by the end of the year, but with the
help of MailWasher it won't be because the spam is intolerable.

Zone alarm's free firewall is as good as you're going to get for free. Don't
give them any money for zone alarm pro. I was so enamored of their free
product that I plunked down 40 smackers to upgrade and lost not only the
$40, but their free version as well. I downloaded a corrupt install file and
their idea of customer service is to tell me to send them my visa number
again so I can download another (probably corrupt) install file.

Not necessarily. I had problems with Zone Alarm (blue screens, system
instability) so I tried a couple of other free firewall products. The
one I like best it Sygate Personal Firewall. It's a little more
"techie" than ZA and is a little more complicated to set up, but once
that's done you pretty much forget it's there.
