At 60 watts, the Vintage 30's have a lower breakup threshold. Additionally,
they are a little warmer than the G12-80's, IMHO.

Another contributing factor to the excessive brightness problem might also
be your tubes. Try replacing the preamp tubes first with some Sovtek
12AX7WBs. I've found these to be extremely warm sounding. TIP: Order one
or two more than you need (they're cheap) so you can return any that are
dead out of the box. The ones that test out good will last a long time with
good tones.

I have a Rivera S120 that came with G12's and was painfully bright. I
switched to the V30's and it softened the high end quite a bit.

I remember reading the initial review in GP about the Tonemaster. Their
concern was that it was way too bright with anything other than the
Vintage 30's. In their rebuttle, the boys at Fender admitted that
they voiced the amp with and espescially for Vintage 30's. GP
concurred that the V30's warmed the amp up quite a bit...

To me Vintage 30's are almost the perfect speaker for a 1-12 british
sounding combo. They have a ok bottom, they have a warm tone, they have a
good clean when not overdriving, they are bright but not harsh, they are
all these cool things. But everytime I crank on them they start to give
me some funny sounds when i overdrive them. Up around the 12-15th fret on
the High E and B they will add a squaking, Kazoo like tone to the note.
To some people this is great, to me I think its a little annoying.
Especially when your just cooking and you are climbing up and you reach
for this high E bend and halfway through the bend you hear a kazoo! I
have noticed this with different heads and different vintage 30's.
Also they seem to go dirty all of the sudden, they dont transition clean
to dirty as smoothly as i would like. Any buddy know of a speaker that
might get me what I want. I have never try'd a Classic 80.

Thanks Perry
