You didn't specify that this be BIG NAME bands, so I hereby submit the name
of my band, Group Therapy, to the growing list. We do a (very nice, IMHO)
rendition on our upcoming CD "Eyes of the Whirled", due out in January. We
bill ourselves as San Diego's Best Para-Professional Garage Band.
It sure is a fun song to play! Our recorded version features the second
solo being played by a friend of the band, Mike Miller. He was a
notoriously picky tone-head, and cut several passes at it, always tweaking
the tone (Strat-Marshall pedal-BF Princeton, IIRC). I'm sure he "vetoed"
all the passes. Unfortunately, Mike died a few years ago. When we went
back to listen to the cut, we started comparing solos and found two of his
that meshed perfectly. I think we even snuck a piece of a third solo in at
the end. The result is a truly towering finish. I'm usually not a fan of
such "unnatural" techniques but this time it _works_. There was no way we
could avoid putting it on the CD. RIP, Mike.
Anyway, so how many (thousands) of garage bands cover this one?
Cheers,

Listen to Jimi play it live (Hendrix in the west I think). There is
really no need to go further.
<<I've lostthe plot a bit here. Has anyone mentioned the bloody awful version
on "Eric Claptons Rainbow Concert" yet?>>
I did, indirectly. When I was researching this, I found there were several
different versions done by Eric Clapton when he was alone and with Derek & the
Dominos. The Rainbow album did show up. I've never heard that version,
though.
P.S. I found versions from 20 different bands/artists.
There are TONS of Jimi's recordings out there. A few of his own albums
(straight studio stuff), some live recordings, and tons of tributes by other
Didn't William Shatner do a version? Or was it Leonard Nimoy?

I wouldn't be surprised after some of the versions I found hanging out there.
P.S. Actually, I think it was Spock, and he sang it in Vulcan. ;-)
The Hamsters have recorded both line and studio versions of Little
Wing. Check out

for details. I typed all the album info out yesterday and I ain't
gonna do it again ! By the way there's also an audio sample of
their Little Wing on this site. If you get a chance to see them live
you won't be disappointed.

Paul Rodgers (w/ Neal Schon) live on '93s "The Hendrix Set".
Mediocre, and this a fan of both Paul and Neal.

How about Like and Eddie playing Little Wing live?
pretty cool.
Carl
Speaking of Little Wing covers, if you could point me towards where that
Metallica version could be found it would be much appreciated.

Mark,
Not even sure it exists, about a year or so ago one of my students
played it for me and said Metallica did it and he learned it from
tabulature from a guitar magazine. I'd like to find out for sure
myself!
Frank
They have done it on a show sometime, but I don't think it's recorded. I
couldn't find it in my database, although I found 20+ vesions -- some done by
WAY lesser known artists.
