A Progressive System For the Acoustic Guitar
Class Offerings: Winter '96
€ ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS -basic guitar in eight weeks
If you can snap your fingers, you can take this class: a fun, effective
program for beginners who want to get started right. Strumming, chording,
singing along; the basics of all guitar styles. Learn folk, blues,
country, and rock 'n roll oldies with efficient techniques to optimize
your practice time. Lots of individual attention and in-class play.

€ BEYOND BEGINNERS -skills and repertoire for the advancing guitarist
If you can play a few basic chords, a few simple strums, this class moves
you forward with an eclectic roundup of folk, blues, country, rock and
singalong standards. Introductory fingerpicking and flatpicking; new
chords and strums. A great refresher for the rusty guitarist. Music
reading not required. Tuesdays, 6pm. Instructor: Joe Vinikow
€ ACOUSTIC GUITAR SONGBOOK III-more tunes and techniques for the
adventurous player
Energize your playing with this ongoing workshop of intermediate
fingerstyle and flatpick techniques. Blues, country, ragtime, vintage rock
Œn roll and Beatle tunes; chords up the neck, runs, fills, licks, tricks
and theory. A good opportunity to get off a "plateau" and move forward
with your playing. Music reading not required. New material each term.

€ New! JUMP BLUES and R&B -big town blues meets swing and beyond
This class continues the evolution of modern blues into the swing and jazz
influenced hybrids popularized by artists from Louis Jordan to Gatemouth
Brown to Ray Charles. We'll explore basic moveable chord forms, passing
chords; characteristic licks, riffs and fills, and soloing up the neck
including flat keys. Special seminar: Winter term '96 only. Tuesdays, 8pm.

€ New! CHORD MELODY CLASSICS -techniques and repertoire for solo jazz guitar
An introduction to solo acoustic jazz guitar, for finger or pick style
players. This class focuses on the creative process of fusing melody,
harmony and bass accompaniment into complete, stand-alone guitar
arrangements. Chord theory, fingerboard mechanics and visualization and
original arrangements of classic jazz and swing-era standards from Duke
Ellington to Django Reinhardt. Tuesdays, 9pm. Instructor: Joe Vinikow

General Information-Class sessions are an hour in length, and the term is
8 weeks in length. Class size is limited, typically around half a dozen
students. Classes begin Tuesday, February 20th. For information on fees

Instructor Joe Vinikow has over twenty five years experience playing and
teaching the guitar. A graduate of Yale University, he holds an MA in
music from the University of Washington. A longtime faculty member of the
Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, he has been Artist-in-Residence for the
Seattle Arts Commission and the King County Arts Commission, and his work
has been supported by the Washington State Arts Commission and The
National Endowment for the Arts.
Julie Sakahara is an accomplished guitarist and longtime guitar instructor
and performer, and a founding member of the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop.
