David asked:

Syracuse, NY?

There is really nothing of note. Sam Ash is there, in Mattydale (so what).
BeBop Music in Liverpool (northern suburb) used to be good, but is now mostly
low end crapola and used stuff. Bonne Music is gone. Onondaga Music is
overpriced and limited. There's a little music store on North Salina St. in
the city that's ok, but nothing to write home about.

I was raised in Syracuse, and still have family there. It's only 80 miles from
here, so I'm there reasonably often. I NEVER go to the music stores there any
more.

David, If you're that close, you owe it to yourself to come to Rochester.
Several excellent stores; a high end acoustic shop (Stutzman's Guitar Center,
not in any way affiliated with Guitar Center, which is also here), an UNREAL
store with the largest oneplace inventory of guitars in the world (House Of
Guitars; must be seen to be believed), and two or three other really good
stores, each with a niche.

Drop me a line if you get to the area. I'll buy ya a beer....

Yeah...and of that list, all are pretty weak. I know several folks who drive
the 80 miles to Rochester to shop for musical instruments.

I'm originally from Rome, NY and I can say that H.O.G in Rochester is well
worth any trip.

Best I've seen in the nation, so far. Although, I hear that Nashville has a
couple of good ones.

Never been to H.O.G. (intend to go on my next Rochester trip tho), but have
been to Broadway Music and Gruhn Guitars in Nashville - both are stellar,
but different. Broadway has more stuff (amps, drums, recording eq, etc.) -
but has mostly everyday "player" type equipment. Gruhn's is almost
exlusively stringed intruments - high-end "players" to some true
collectibles. Both are worth the stop if you're ever in the area.

If your going to make the trip to Rochester to go to the HOG don't miss
making a stop at Stutzman's Guitar Center on Rt. 104. The HOG does have a
massive volume of instruments, Stutzman's has a good amount of quality
instruments. While at Stutzman's check out there made in Rochester line the
American Acoustek.
