I've got a temperature and humidity controlled room for storate. Temp ~ 68
degrees F and Relative Humidity ~ 45%. I'm curious if whether or not a
guitar/bass in its case should be lying on its side or standing up? Anyone
know? Does it matter at all?

I can't see how it would. But then again, I could be wrong.
You do know to loosen or remove the strings if you're storing the
instrument for a long period of time without playing it, right?

Remove the XX
Why is that? There are plenty of old basses that have had strings on them for
their entire lives - why should it matter whether someone plays them or not? I'm
not trying to flame, I'm just curious.
Cheers,
Eric
Beats me. It's just what I've always been told.
It's got something to do with the constant pressure from the strings.
But I don't know for sure what that has to do with playing/not playing it.

Basses and guitars are DESIGNED to have normal string tension on them. I
don't think relaxing the tension or taking the strings off for storage is a
good idea at all.

Lord Valve Speaketh:
Bad move, Ex-Lax. If you remove the strings, the truss rod
will warp the neck. Basses do just fine with strings on 'em
for decades at a time, whether they are being played or not.
