I think you may be confused. Paul was the BASS player for the Yardbirds. The
lead guitar players were in order, Clapton, Beck and, briefly Page. Rhythm
guitar was Jim McCarty and I believe he switched over to bass to replace
Smith when he left. I believe Smith had a pretty successful career as a
record producer afterwards.

one of them became a photographer and took the band picture for Led Zeppelin
I. cant remember which Yardbird it was tho. There was a story, prolly a lie,
but you never know, that the decision this guy made to become a pro
photographer was at least partially influenced by the band's appearance in
that weird movie, Blow Up, which is largely about the antics of a
professional photographer in Swinging London in about 1966...... the
photographer in the movie apparently led a rather, um, interesting life....

Paul is a well-known UK record producer these days. I don't think he still
plays, not even with the reformed Yardbirds (run by Jim McCarty and Chris
Dreja).

SCREAM!

"Rhythm guitar was Jim McCarty"??!!

The original hit-making line-up was:

Keith Relf (vocals/harmonica)
Eric Clapton (lead guitar) [he had replaced pre-deal leadman Top Topham]
Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar)
Paul Samwell-Smith (bass guitar)
Jim McCarty (drums).

All three front-line musicians also contributed backing vocals.

Eric Clapton left in spring 1965, and was replaced by Jeff Beck.

Paul Samwell-Smith left in autumn 1966 and was replaced (on bass) by Jimmy
Page. After a short interval, Jimmy and Chris Dreja swapped roles, so that
Chris was now on bass and Jimmy and Jeff played twin lead guitars. In early
1967, Jeff Beck left, and the 'Birds carried on as a 4-piece with Jimmy Page
on lead guitar.

Actually, the confusion is very understandable here, because there
are, in fact, *two* Jim McCarty's.

One is, as you rightly say, the Yardbirds' drummer but the other is a
guitarist.

Even more coincidental is the fact that guitar-toting Jim is sort of
in the same family tree.

He played in Cactus with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice - ex-Vanilla
Fudge - who also went on to play with one Jeff Beck who, of course,
was with the Yardbirds.

The two are often confused, particularly as they have identical names,
but also beccause they're quite closely linked by the careers of
Yardbirds guitarists.

Oh - BTW - hi, Jim!

Nice to see you outside of u.k.m.g.

Ah well, that could well explain it...

Oh, I'm often to be found in alt.guitar as well as other disparate places.
