I saw EVH as well on Friday afternoon at the Peavey booth. Since he's
approximately 45 or so, looking 20 years older would put him at 65 in your
book... So you think he looks like Bob Dole (well,Mr Dole may be even a
little more senior than that)? EVH is slim, pretty solidly built and has
more hair that many 20 year olds I know.... However, he did look burned
out... Regarding the bathroom incident, hearsay to me since I wasn't there.
However, it seems strange that that would be the case. EVH's limmo was
parked at the loading dock right behind the South Hall exhibit floor --
approximately 50 yards away from thr Peavey booth.
>Van Halen fan but I must say I have lost respect and faith for Eddie,
Because he looks older? I hope you see that if you think age will not catch
up to you, you have some very sad news coming your way: you'll either watch
your body waste away with time or you'll die young. Better learn to accept
that and age gracefully, from a mental standpoint if nothing else.
Gil
I appreciate you comments about aging but to make a point, I saw the
Stones play a few weeks ago and they have at least 10 years on Eddie and
they looked and played great. The stones have managed to keep it all
together much longer that the many incarnations of Van Halen. I will
state for the record that my preference is the David Lee Roth era of VH
and I've gone to many different NAMM show over the past decade and can
remember when both Ed and VH were at the top of their game and now with
all of the changes and bickering and unwillinginess to let up on the
booze and drugs reduced Ed into a wash out mentally and physically, this
was apparent at this years show IMO.
For a comparison and contrast, Eric Johnson who is around Ed's age still
looks like he's in his late 20's to early 30's. Yes it's true we all will
get old but a good mental attitude and healthy lifestyle will help keep to
slow down time.
In conclusion I did not like Ed's appearance at the show, it seemed like
he would have rather been elsewhere. In NAMMS past he was much more
enthusiastic about coming to the shows and interacting with the people, I
did not catch that Vibe?
These are just my comments and observations I don't hate Ed, I just think
he should find his peace and balance. I wish you all happiness and good
health:)

Kanan, I too believe the Stones are great -- and BTW, I have never
personally been a fan of either VH or EVH himself. However, Keith Richard
is looking like a cadaver and has been for at least 10 years now... :)

True, EJ is indeed a living example that sleeping in formaldehyde does work.
But I'd say he's the exception, and not the rule.

Absolutely. All those years of hard living, hard partying, etc. are coming
back to haunt him. All that abuse takes its toll on one's body, causing
premature aging of the organs and the exterior tissues (mostly the facial
area).
As do heavy smokers.

Joe Perry sold his soul to Jimmy Page. The devil didn't want it. That

It's the drinking that does most of the aesthetic damage. Perry liked to
drink, but by his own admission he preferred drugs.

To this day, Steven Tyler will freely admit he cannot believe all the original

Who cares how Eddie looked. Let's talk about the 5150 Mach II that he
and Peavey introduced!
It appears that this amp has separate eq and a better clean channel. Any
other features? They should have made the efx loop parallel.
The 5150 II is currently only available as a stack. If they've made a
combo version, I haven't seen it yet.

And it's true, the hard living HAS hurt her appearance. That, and the fact
she's a very fair-skinned redhead. And if you had the passion for guitar she

The basic difference is that Joe Perry is sober, and has been for years.
Pictures of him during the "Toxic Twins" days are scary, and rare for good
reason.
One of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life is the reaction on the
faces of people who run into alcoholics they know after a couple of years of
sobriety. It's usually on the order of, "Oh my God..." or "Holy shit... you
look great".

Actually, she said it "sounds like bacon smells". And I remember interviews
during *her* drinking days when you *never* saw her smile the way she did the
other night.
I'm sure he meant it at the time, but for an alcoholic, staying sober is
harder than you think.
Last summer, a friend who works for a music mag went to photograph VH at the
PNC Arts Center in NJ. I went with him, so we stood in "pit row" at the foot
of the stage along with all the VH regulars. Before they came on, a lot of
discussion went on about whether we were getting "drunk Eddie" or "sober
Eddie".
One measure into the first song, it was apparent we were seeing "drunk
Eddie". Half of the regulars left on the spot. He's still Eddie Van Halen,
but if you've seen him play sober you know that when he's drinking, he's
basically a shadow of himself.
hmm, inconsistencies?

Didn't see him at NAMM, but his health has been poor as of late. He is
"supposedly" sober now, but I think all the excess partying him at the guys
did in the '80's has caught up with him. He did have hip replacement surgery
not that long ago, and he still smokes like a chimney... unless he's quit that
which I doubt.

It's got that big honkin' headstock though. I thought those didn't show up
on Strats 'til late '66 or so?
Dan
I don't know about EVH's hip. A couple of years ago, when I was working
in an OR, the word was that joint replacements lasted a decade, maybe
2 decades. They are a BITCH to replace a second time and could well
be impossible to do a third time. They don't like to replace joints
in young people (and by "young" they mean under 55 or so), unless
it is completely necessary.
OTOH, I haven't been in touch with that technology for a few years, and
it is a rapidly changing, BIG $$$$, field. They certainly are doing
some things they would not have done 3 years, ago. Maybe this
is one of them.

I was just talking to a doctor involved in one of my cases about this recently.
They call the heavy duty drinkers and smokers "sminkers". Smoking, drinking
and drugs individually can cause a lot of damage. Together, they are very
destructive. Joe does look remarkably well for all the abuse he's inflicted on
his own body.

The _very late_ '65s have the big headstock - I think it's only December '65
and onward. I have what is either a December '65 or probably January '66
'all original' Strat, the datable stuff is very late '65. That big headstock
cuts the price way down. I did the same thing with my early '69
Super-Reverb - got one where it was basically all original blackface except
for the silver faceplate.
Each Fender product has a different "CBS transition" where the suits screwed
it up to some degree. I think they started with the Strats. Teles are pretty
fine until '70, unless you're a '50s Tele partisan.
I tend to avoid vintage stuff unless it plays like butter an sounds great -
and even then I like to aim at the stuff which just misses the big bucks. It
cuts down on the price and the somewhat reduces the chances that it's bogus.
>That's right, and it's not the original neck anyway. Bonnie

By the way, my '66('65) is an odd (but good) sounding Strat. Looks kind of
funny since the three color burst is a bit exaggerated in the red - they had
solved the fading red 'problem' by that point.

I've heard and read several different stories about Bonnie's beloved guitar
('ol brown strap"). I once read in the Fender magazine it was a 1962, then I
saw an interview where Jackson Browne said it was a 1967. When I saw her in
concert last August I knew it was neither. I prefer to take Bonnie's word for
it. She said on 60 Minutes last Wednesday night, "It's a 1965 Stratocaster I
bought in 1969 for $120 at 3:00 a.m. after a gig." So I guess that settles the
misunderstanding anyone may have had.
And yes, I am a hard core Raitt fan. You, on the other hand, are a gutless

not like some musician sells his guitar at that hour to pay the rent,
usually the cash is going towards a substance of a more immediate consumption.

I know a bullshitter when I see one bullshitting, that's all it is, buster.
the funny thing is Dan Rather who has probably has made quite an effort
to hide his accent, and then there's Bonnie, the beverly hills radcliffe girl
acting like a graduate of the Robert Zimmermann 'slur your words and they'll
think you're a cool hipster musician' school of rockstarism.

I'm sure she didn't give a shit WHY he/she was selling the guitar; she was 18
years old, saw the guitar, wanted it, and bought it. What's the big deal?
As far as printed reviews go, people are often misquoted, so I will defer to
the live interviews, if there's ever a question.

She went to Harvard, not Radcliffe.
