So I'll start: I presently own 4 guitars. Carvin DC135, Ibanez - 15 year
old Strat clone, Ovation - 20 year old Custom Baladeer acoustic/electric,
and a McCurdy lap steel. I play all but the Ibanez in my band. I bought
the Carvin 2 years ago, and the lap steel a year ago. Now I'm building a
Tele (well it has been a whole year, and gee...I've got this money saved
up...).
So...how many do you own?
Cliff
I confess I've had it pretty bad, and still do! Here are some I used
to own:
Epiphone Acoustic
Hofner Bass
Unknown Strat Copy
Kramer fretless Bass
Fender Mustang
Rickenbacker 3001
Ibanez Roadstar II Bass
Aria Pro - Steinberger clone
Yamaha BB350 fretless
Kramer Fretted Bass
Yamaha RBX200 Bass
Memphis Bass
Fender Redondo Acoustic
Takamine Classical Acoustic
Cimar Acoustic
60's No-name electric
Mountain Acoustic
Telestar-double neck bass/guitar
Electra Les Paul Copy
`72 Gibson Melody Maker
Peavey T-40 Bass
Carvin DC200 Electric
Some Jap 335 Copy
Zolla P-Bass
Traded, sold, or gave away most of them! Here's what I presently have:
`64 Gibson EB-0
`84 Gibson Explorer III
Bill Lawrence Strat
Carvin LB-20 Bass
`63 Danelectro Pro-1
Hirade Classical Acoustic
Ibanez N600 acoustic/electric
No-name Jap P-Bass
I am one sick puppy! I need help!!!??!!! 8~} 8~}
They're coming to take me away, ha ha ho ho hee hee.....
Dano
PRS CE Bolt-On
Roland GR303 Guitar/Synth controller (just like Pat Metheny's)
Epiphone Classical
I'd like to acquire the following:
Dream Axe #1: Fretless, with line markings, Hipshot Trilogy
Bridge, Hex pickup with hex fuzz. Why? I'm fascinated by the sounds
of Indian violinists, sarod players, and just about anyone else into
microtonal expression. Also, I like the sound of hex fuzz. One more
special feature to this axe; Infinite Guitar circuitry designed and
installed by Michael Brook for controlled polyphonic sustain.
Dream Axe #2: A semihollowbody PRS also equiped with a Trilogy and a
hex pickup for mixing in fake-acoustic-guitar sounds, driving MIDI
equipment, and hex fuzz.
Dream Axe #3: A Chapman Grand (12-string)Stick
That's all I want. Really. BTW, Becker's editorial was hilarious. I
thought immediately of G.E. Smith (of Saturday Night Live Band) and
his policy of never playing the same guitar ever again for the rest
of the show after using it for one song.
Paolo
Well, I've owned about 90 at one time or another - 38 at one time - although
I used to have a sideline buying and selling them (many of those 38 were
on consignment at the time), so that probably doesn't count.
This is what I currently (or recently) own:
1964 Epiphone Casino
1966 Fender Mustang (bought new, 2/67)
1969 Hohner acoustic (bought new, 10/69)
early 70's Yamaha FG-140 (6-string acoustic)
early 70's Yamaha FG-200 (12-string acoustic)
1974 Fender Stratocaster
1977 Ibanez 6/12 doubleneck (sold last month)
late 70's Elektra P-bass semi-knockoff
early 80's Hondo Chiquita
1986 Tokai AST-56 - probably my favorite
1989 Fender Strat XII
1990 Fender Strat Plus Deluxe (sold last week)
1993 Fender Standard Jazz Bass
Andrew
Katie Mae - Fender J.D. Telecaster
Rosalita - Fender Mexi-Tele (currently on indefinite loan...)
Helena Bucket - Ovation C157
Stella Blue - Harmony "Hollywood" archtop
Bertha - Kramer Ferrington acoustic bass

How's the tele project going, Cliff?
I currently own 5 guitars, 3 of which I use regularly in the band I'm in:
o 1972 Fender stratocaster (what a sweet guitar this is)
o 1976 Gibson SG
o 1979 Fender stratocaster (my main axe - even sweeter than the '72)
o 1994 Homemade stratocaster copy (could be my next main axe)
o 19?? Fender p-bass (used mainly for home recording projects)
BTW If the older (70s) Fender strats are as bad as many seem to think, why
are the ones I see for sale priced $600.00 - $800.00? (Chicago area, fall 1993)
Any opinions?

Opinions expressed herein are my own and do not necessarily reflect
the opinions of my employer.
It's good to know that I'm not the only one out on the edge. My tastes
are a little less eclectic than some of the others in this thread. I end
up with several copies of the same guitar, mostly so I can mess around with
pickups. As of this writing,I have thirteen, including a lap steel. Of
the thirteen, only an acoustic, a bass, and my '56 Duo Sonic never see band
work. Actually, the acoustic went to one gig, but someone else played it.
(I joke that I belong to the Guitar-of-the-Month Club.)
Not much has been written about a related condition -- Amplifier
Acquisition Syndrome. This is an equally debilitating condition, made even
worse by the fact that amplifiers cannot normally be hidden under a bed, as
can a guitar or guitar case. As of this writing, I have five, including a
dinky little bass practice amp. Other than that amp, all others see band
work, except for one, and that is mostly because I just got it.
My living room is decorated in early Fender, Gibson and Marshall style.

I even pressured my very own brother into my addiction. Now he comes over to
my house and all we do is play guitar. I spend all my time at work on r.m.m.g
and putting myself on guitar listservs and searching ftp sites for tab.
Hopefully my boss won't find out. Sometimes I get home late because I stopped
off at a music store on the way home - then my wife wants to know why I smell

So that leaves me with 10 guitars: most electric, a bass, and a few
acoustics including a classical. I love them all too much to part with,
except for an Alvarez acoustic that has pretty wood but sounds tragically
shitty. Makes a good party guitar though, you wouldn't mind if it got banged
around a little. Might give it to a nephew when he's old enough. An SRV
Strat is squirreled away for investment value, so I can't say I'll *never*
sell one... And if an axe gives you trouble or doesn't suit you I suppose
it can make way for one that's better. Or for some electronics.
*Don't forget* to will your guitars to a friend or loved one, so they'll
be in good hands when you head for that big gig in the sky!

Like you Tim, my '79 natural colored Strat is my favorite guitar. The
sound is excellent, and its maple neck is very forgiving when I haven't
picked up an axe in weeks. Got it for US$600, but from a friend. Me and
Beavis think the bullet truss rod and large headstock are "probably, like,
pretty cool." This 'friend' is dangerous, he often has to liquidate
guitars and amps and I come running with cash in hand. Got all but a couple
through him.
I definitely have too many, especially for my hack abilities; but, it's
a disease that feels so good...

I too suffer from GAS!
Guitars I own:
1945 Gibson ES300 ( Christmas present from my wife!)
1963 Fender Jaguar
1964 Fender Jaguar
1967 Fender Jaguar
1966 Fender Telecaster
1964 Femter Duo Sonic II
1967 Rickenbacker 360/12
1960's Framus Tele Copy
1980 Yahama Acoustic
and 2 strat copies that I have made into clocks
Guitars I had:
1966 Fender 12 string
1965 Fender Mustang
1965 Fender Music Master
1980's Gretsch Electric
Amps I own:
1945 Gretsch Tweed
1960's Gibson Skylark
1964 Fender Band Master
1980's Super Champ
I confess that some of my guitars were not bought with the guitar's best
interest in mind. If this offends you, I apologize. My GAS is mixed with
an occasional flair up of GDS---Guitar Destruction Syndrome
So now is the time to stand up and confess, eh?
I have:
'67 Tele with factory Bigsby (thanks to all who helped confirm it is legit)
'85 Schecter Strat single,single,humbucker w/coil tap (factory made--no kit)
'61 Les Paul Jr. SG body--1st year!
'73 Fender Musicmaster Bass
Two old, most likely cheap archtop acoustics (look great on a wall)
I had:
Yamaha 6 and 12 strings
Cortez Les Paul copy (first axe--horrible)
Epiphone Riviera Beautiful 335 copy--played lousy
Here comes the offensive part:
some kind of green sunburst hollow body with the name Blackjack on a plastic
nameplate nailed to the headstock
smashed on stage at a gig one night. It was hanging out in my
basement and it occured to me that instead of being ignored it
might want to go out with a bang.
Then I realized that this could be habit forming when:
A guy brings a '65 Harmony Rocket (hollow body, 3 pickups) to a job,
(he knew what I needed), and I gave him $25 bucks for it although it
only just played and only one pickup worked. It lasted exactly 15 mins.
(That was the shortest time I ever owned a guitar)
I feel terrible. I have abused innocent, working musical intruments.
I am evil.
If you are going to do this, I advise against it.
It is an awful waste.
I also recommend hollow and semi-hollow bodied guitars since they break
easier and with a better....display (?) for lack of a better word.
(Perhaps "impact" would be a better word--no pun intended)
I feel better having confessed. Thank you.

I have never come across a 70's Strat that I liked. AllI have tried have felt
hideous and sounded mediocre at best. I have heard that CBS occasionly fucked
up and made a good one, tho. They aren't horrible, but I think a new American
Standard sounds, feels and plays better for less than what people are asking
for 70's strats. The notion that I should pay more because its old doesn't
grab me. Pre-CBS strats have somewhat of a reasonable explanation for the high
prices--there was more attention paid to the guitars and the standards of
quality were higher.
Ah, the ravings of a strat fiend.

he got it from a friend. It is a lovely handpainted puke yellow with
a pitted black pickguard and a screw (flat head wood) as the top
strap support
This one isn't really mine but I bought it:
? Can't remember Classical Guitar - I bought this for my girlfriend last
month since my Yamaha was "too big" for her to get her arm around. It
doesn't see much action. I don't know how many times I've been to the
store to drool over the stuff they have there. Maybe if I spent more time
playing I'd be worth a damn. Oh well....

Dobro 60D squareneck (early 80's)
ESP Telecaster
- woods are about the only original parts left
- Duncan Alnico II Pro Tele pickups
- Schaller tuners + strap locks
- CTS pots, CRL 3-way switch, bone nut
Yamaha CS-525E electric nylonstring
- slim, cutaway, 14-fret neck
- onboard preamp w/bass, treble, volume controls
what I'd like to have:
a long list, this one :^) a good OM and dreadnought would be nice,
then again, I watched this Norman Blake video last night and Nancy had
this 00-45...*sigh*
An archtop of course, Collings, Benedetto, Cruz ?? Semihollowbody PRS,
style O National, Scheerhorn resophonic for those Jerry Douglas-licks,
better Telecaster...now this could go on and on and on...I'm hooked..

Gee.. How are those of us who don't have enough money to buy new guitars
suposed to satisfy our guitar acquisition syndrom?

I started with a Cort thing that would go out of tune if you breathed on it.
Since I'm sensitive to mistunings, this annoyed me so much I splurged out on
a custom guitar built to my specs.
Completely hand made, neck and all.
Blackwood body, with American Maple and Queensland Maple core.
Rock Maple neck with 2-octave Rosewood fretboard.
Hard tail, with Sperzel locking nuts and zero fret.
Three EMG 89s (active single/humbucker pickups).
DIN plug for direct pickup outputs.
The DIN plug lets me mix volume, eq, and effects on each pickup separately.
A bit of a wank, but why not? :)
All I want is that Ensoniq DP-4. Though some of the new boxes out now look
pretty good. I've been on an effect box hunt for the last 3 years, and still
haven't found anything I like except the DP-4. Pity it costs $2500.
after reading this thread for a while, i decided my perfectly
decent guitar was no longer any good and traded it, with a
few hundred dollars, for a new tele plus. this is the
sweetest tele i've ever seen...transparent black finish a double
pickup on the neck, etc.. $440 with a 150 trade... sweetest guitar
i've ever played... damn all of you ...:)

Exactly what I was wondering too. :^) I don't have $$$ to buy new
guitars but I listed 'what I'd like to have' because somebody else had
done it too. Ahhh, daydreams...
We've got to kill this thread!! Not because it's boring or anything,
quite the opposite. The problem is I'm a dirt poor grad student who can't afford
anything more than new pickups for my rapidly aging Ibanez, and all these
posts make me drool all over the keyboard!!!
I really want an SG, but I'm trying to hold off until I can (almost)
afford it and until I get substantially better as a player.

Pete S. You call that blocking? 'Cause I don't. I call it a
bunch of old ladies waiting for a bus. Now let's see
Go N.Y. Giants! some blocking or I'll staple you to an electric fence!

How about y'all (sorry, that's the Kentucky sneakin' in)? If you had to have
only one, WHICH one would it be?
