Hi,

I went through "Guitar Player's" last issue with an emphasis on the
Tele-twang, however, most guitarists cited were playing
rockabilly/country/blues.
Are there good examples of Tele sounds in indie/wave music etc. using
tele's and distortion?
Apart from that, is there a neck pickup for the tele that creates a good
sound fully distorted? Mine sounds a bit muddy when played through my JCM
800 at full gain.

Cheers,
Peter

I don't think there is any shortage of telecasters in most areas of
popular music (though I can't think of a jazz musician who uses a tele
offhand). Though, I don't think tele's will ever be associated with rock
as strats are. As for bands, the Cure, Bauhaus, Cranberries, Radiohead,
Longpigs, and countless others have been seen using teles at one time or
another with distortion.

I put a one of those single coil sized humbuckers (i think the model is
little 59) at the neck of one of my teles. It makes a good work horse for
for most effects and distortion (it also has a seymour duncan Jerry
Donahue Lead pickup at the bridge, which cuts down on the overall
'shrillness' teles can have).

Lots of jazz guitarists use Teles. Ed Bickert is another one. I had seen
Danny Gatton many times playing jazz gigs with his Tele. There are quite a
few NY guitarists who are tired of fighting feedback and want to play more
modern stuff who use solid body guitars such as:

Mike Stern,
John Abercrombie,
Wolfgang Muthspiel,
John Scofield (thinline),
Randy Johnston (thinline)

The fact is that the player's concept and not the instrument are the
governing factor in jazz.

McLaughlin played Pauls and SGs a lot. DiMeola played a Paul. Now they
were mostly playing fusion and not straight jazz but I don't think anyone
would claim they weren't jazz players. I've seen a local guy in town use
a Paul with a JC for straight jazz to good effect, although he also plays
an archtop from time to time.

Darned right. If I happen to practice for the next ten years and get my jazz

Ed Bickert and Ted Greene are two _great_ jazz players in tbe
traditional vein, who come to my mind off hand, who play teles (pretty
much exclusively I think). Not only can they each be considered an
innovator but they also are whatcha might call tonemeisters as well.
Beautiful stuff.

speaking of which:

I'm interested in obscure western swing and country jazz artists I've
overlooked (you might check the Swing Set web site at

LC played with a lot of guitars over the years, although he's most known
for the 335. His albums credit many different instruments, though--Strats,
Guilds, 335's, etc. LC's not a straight jazz player, of course, but I think
he fits the bill broadly defined.

From what I read, a borrowed Tele was used on Purple Haze and Fire.
If you really listen, you can hear the Tele charactor.

Elastica, one of the guitarists in Radiohead, Blur, Supergrass (the latter
also use Burns sometimes). The list goes on...

Not sure about both using Teles as Page acquired Beck's, or one of Beck's.
Actually I thought Beck mostly played an Esquire in the Yardbirds, so
maybe it was almost a two Tele line up. Page started in the Yardbirds on
bass though. Not sure about the detailed history any more than that

This is off the subject, But I need to find a pickup guy who is familiar with
Burns Tri-sonic pickups, If anyone knows anyone please post, Also if anyone
knows how to get in touch with Kent Armstrong in the UK it would be helpful
as he is the only guy I know of that is familiar with these things except of
course for Brian May.

Kent Armstrong doesn't make the Tri Sonic pickups, though. There is
someone who works for Burns who designs the NuSonic (?) pickups, and so
on. His name is buried in the depths of one of my guitar mags somewhere,
but I'd reckon this might be the person to speak to rather than Kent
Armstrong.

Kent Armstrong (or Sky pickups) is based in Shadoxhurst, Hazeldene, in
Kent, UK, I think. (something like that).

Yes, Kent Armstrong is your man for all pickup-related stuff. I'm
pretty sure he makes replicas of the old Burns pickups as well:
