I'm guessing that the Rt. 66 with the Airbrake didn't work out. Or was
it a case of the MAZ just being better ?

The Route 66 sounds incredible with no attenuator. But incredibly
LOUD as well. It sounds great with the attenuator, but even then it's
too loud for what I need. I either have to attenuate the amp down to
a very low level, which affects the tone in a way I don't like, or
it's too loud. I think the Airbrake is a keeper even though I have no
use for it, simply because it's the best attenuator I've ever played
and someday I'll need an attenuator again. Finally, the Maz just
sounds better to my ears. I'd like to get a Maz 18 Jr and use that
for my overdrive and the Maz 38 for a cleaner sound. Actually, I'd
like to keep everything, but I need to clean house a bit and I'm gonna
need some cash on hand to do the house deal so I thinned the hear a
little.

I'm still hanging on to my Maz 38. But if I ever see a Naylor in a
store I'll definitely try it. I saw the Naylor booth at the Arlington
guitar show, but the dude in the booth had the amp up on a table, not
ready to play, and he had an attitude so I kept walking. The amps
were all "Texas'ed up" with conchos and stuff.
Have you ever even tried a reissue Fender Deluxe Reverb? Have
you tried one through those Fender 2X12's that come with the
Tonemaster?

Yes. I liked it OK, although it was too "brittle" and needed some
tweaking. Nothing a new speaker, some better tubes and a bias pot
couldn't fix. It was OK clean but when I cranked it up it was no
blackface Deluxe Reverb. If they were cheaper I'd probably own one
but I don't like paying that kind of cash for a PCB amp that I can't
even bias properly because Fender saved money by not putting a bias
pot on the board.

Nope. Played a Blues DeVille through a Tonemaster 2x12 and it sounded
great though.
Yeah I don't know anything about the one's manufactured post Kyle owning the
company. Would definitely look for one from that period. They're not all that
much cash in the scheme of things just hard to find I guess.

Amen.

It can't be that hard to add. I think the resissue would hang
with a band better than an original, frankly. Had a little
more upper midrange ( probably what you're calling "brittle"?).
Dunno, I've only heard one really good blackface DR. The rest
of 'em had some sort of problem or other.
I think the key here is the closed back cabinet for either. Makes
a huge difference.

I bet you're looking for a Deluxe through a closed back cabinet. Maybe
not.

Nope, never played the Mass. I've played the Scholz Power Soak, Marshall
Powerbrake, THD Hot Plate and one other I can't recall at the moment.

Most blackfaces have problems unless they're owned by players who keep 'em
running right. And Deluxe Reverb's suffer from shitty stock speakers.

Maybe an Allen Accomplice head kit? But that's $849, a bit steep for a
single channel kit head.
I've noticed that the new DR RI's have the Italian Jensen C12N vs. the
old Emminence speaker. That Jensen is a much better speaker..I put one
in my Blues Jr. and it made a huge difference for the better.

You'd be better off keeping the Rt. 66....given the price you paid for
it.
Willies American Guitars in St Paul MN has a bf Deluxe Reverb "head" that
someone made. They want to much for it, but there ya go.
Before you sell it, did you try the 5Y(whatever) rectifier in it. Less
voltage, less headroom, more OD coming on sooner.

As much as I hate to sell it, I sold it today on eBay (for a tidy profit)
and I really need the money more than the amps right now, so......but I'd
recommend this amp to anyone who can use a loud amp, it's got great tone.
It does the Dr Z thing, which means it sounds good just about however you
set the knobs.
Yeah, I saw it and knew you were going to clear a few extra bucks on
the sale. But it was still a good price to the Buyer.
Between being gone Thanksgiving week, having my son stay for a week,
and work requirements, I haven't even turned ANY of my amps on since
late November.

Yeah, with that hardwood front it's an easier resale too. And it's
still much cheaper than the list price on a new one.

I rarely play except at rehearsals and gigs these days.
