Marshall amps: EL34's vs. 5881's

Some of the new Marshall amplifiers are shipped with 5881's. As I
remember, this is similar to a 6L6GC with a different base. The 5881's
amps I've heard don't sound drastically different than the older EL34
ones. Is there a major design or sonic difference?

Also, what are the common modifications people are performing on the
JCM900's? They seem to sound real midrangy, or at least "non modern"
sounding if that makes any sense. Based on the schematics I've seen,
there is a fair ammount of solid state stuff in the early gain stages
that could be diddled with...
