but he also used a 330 (not bound) especially live like on the "Tube"
His amps in them days were Fender twins ( or Vox ac30's )
and he used a bit of compression (eg. boxcars maybe) and chorus (gardening)
also if there's a bit of guitar doubling he used a telecaster
Any help?

I think it was a black Rick 340 (pleaes don't quote me on that) and I know
he's used Mesa/Boogies at one point, but I don't think he would have had
the means to own them near the beginning...

I saw R.E.M. several times pre-'86 (the "IRS Years," I suppose),
and Pete Buck primarily used Rick 330s and 360s, with the occasional Tele
and a Les Paul Deluxe thrown in from time to time. And on the Life's Rich
Pagaent tour, he had a number of cheap Strat copies which he destroyed
during the closing rendition of "Just A Touch." Amps were typically Fender
silverface heads with reverb into a Mesa/Boogie 4x12; by the time of LRP, there
was a Boogie MkIII head in the mix, too. Recently, I understand he's been
using a mix of Vox AC-30s and Mesa Trem-O-Verbs. Effects-wise, I remember
some kind of run-of-the-mill chorus and an overdrive. Other than that,
his set-up was fairly straightforward.
The guitar intro of "Life and How to Live It" (LRP)
The verse of "Bang and Blame" (Monster)
Also, to my ears, he uses a mild chorus effect on most of the early stuff.
But I could be wrong...

when i was in college at south carolina, i used to watch REM play club gigs
every chance i got. must have seen them 30 or so times at least. this was
around the time murmur was released. buck was playing a black rickenbacker
330 through a vox ac-30, and a bunch of pedals. i only remember a chorus and
a delay, both ibanez (the big metal ones).
hope this helps.
cheers,
