Silly hyperbole.

This is true! I have been lately listening to their self-titled
"comeback" album (don't know when it was released, but I guess sometime
in the late '90s), and it's great.

Well he is a good guitar player. But it sounds like you are jumping off the
deep end here.

I worked at WYBR/Rockford, IL, then WRRR/Rockford, IL. The band was from
Rockford (except Robin). They used to stop in to get us to play their tunes.
Rick was a nice guy...

Cheap shot, I think on my part.

They are a lot of fun to watch live, for sure, and
have made some fine records.

I disagree. I don't hear them taking advantage of current music trends
- quite the opposite. They pretty much do what they've always done,
which is catchy guitar-driven pop/rock, as pioneered by The Beatles,
The Move, and The Who, among others.

Sure, there's not a lot of deep meaning in their songs, but so what?
Everything doesn't need to be deep poetry. They've got a great singer,
an energetic guitarist who is a prolific songwriter, a solid rhythm
section, and most importantly, they rock like crazy and they're fun...
so, what's not to like?!

And as far as gettin' out... they've been doing it for, like, 25 or 30
years, so I'd venture to say that that's not their primary goal.

Isn't that the whole point of good rock'n'roll? Loud and fun?
I wish we had MORE bands like Cheap Trick. I don't WANT "meaning".

I want "Up in the morning and off to school".

And this thermos. And that's all that I want. Nothing else. Meaningless rock
and roll, and this thermos, and that's ALL that I need. That's IT. And this
paddleball game, but that's all. Just meaningless rock and roll, this
thermos, and the paddleball game, and that's all I need. I don't need
anything else... this ash tray, too, but that's all...

Props to them for finding a way to put "Indonesian" in a
rock song. And "Auf Wiedersehen" is freaking brilliant.

You would think that this would not
require explanation, yet...

<insert "Speed of Sound" by Wings here> Fine album, it is. Fine.

Hope that helped.

Well yeah, they were. Before the first record the guitar magazines and
Circus and Hit Parader and Creem and all had these ads that were just the
edge of the page, like an inch or two in. I remember Bun sitting at drums,
Nielson looking remarkably like he does now, Zander was pretty. The ads
just said "We are going to play a Cheap Trick on you". Then they sort of
arrived or whatever. Anyone remember them ads? Probably not.

Yeah. Amazing how they haven't gotten out yet. Still playing, still
writing, still recording. We should be such a cheap trick, ehy?

No, they are still releasing new albums. I have not seen
them in a very long time, but they do not appear to be
set up on the 401k tour business model.

Very few people understood the process of creating
radio friendly, hooky pop songs with some meat on 'em
as well as Trick.

I think you'd have to understand the role
rock and roll plays as cultural phenomenon in
the middle parts of the country.

Yeah they record a new studio album about every other year.
They still sell out concerts.

I dang near had a wreck when we were driving up to Austin and David
Lindley came on the radio singing "King Of The Bed"

"Up in the morning and off to bed..."
