I want to have a 4 channel, 50 watt, rack mount head built for
me by someone can do the job and will build to my EXACT specs.

Must be of Soldano, VHT, Bogner, Dumble quality.

I live in Austin, TX. So preferably by someone I can kill when it needs
tweaking..

After tons of amps, preamps, programmable EQs, why not just have the damn
thing built to MY needs, not what someone THINKS I need.

Anyhelp would be appreciated...

Kendrick amps in Pflugerville might still be making custom jobs. Give
them a call. They seem to fit your description -- except that they might
wince at putting it in a rack mount chassis (they're bigtime retro).

Theres a guy in California selling kits...they are great!
I was exactly where you're at...frustrated!
I bought an old 1966 Fender Showman and called this guy up.
We talked about what I wanted in an amp and he sent me the stuff.
You must be somewhat knowledgable in electronics but don't have to
be a genius. You do get instructions.
The Showman or a Bassman is a good basic amp to start with
and build on, plus its easy to work on them.

My amp:

I added two stages of gain (with controls),an active effects
loop, a presence control, intensified the treble, mid and bass
controls, a line out (with output control), a push pull
mid boost, a bypass capacitor ( for screaming sustain ),channel
switching, master volume and several things I can't remember now.
I didn't even have to drill any holes in the chassis!
I put in new tube sockets, new filter capacitors( of my tone
choice) and some stuff to protect the tubes from voltage spikes.
Also protection against blown speaker or broken speaker wire
meltdowns of the transformer.
I added Sovtec power tubes and "audiophile quality" Golden
Dragon preamp tubes, and I have my dream amp!

It is VERY quiet and totally versatile. I slave my rack of
effects and MIDI preamp or run it by itself.

I've owned many amps including several Marshalls and this is it!

The great thing is the kit tells you exactly how each little
resistor or capacitor affects the sound and what range of values
you can use...season to your own taste. You can leave out the
effects loop or add something else...its all up to you.

My TOTAL investment in this amp is now about $700.00. I bought
it in several stages to defer the cost over some time.
I wouldn't trade it for anything and I learned alot too.
The outfit is called Torres Engineering. If anyone is interested
email me and I'll send you the address and phone number.

See Ya!
