Hi

Im a guitar teacher in melbourne Australia. I would like to ask fellow
teachers here if they are aware of any course or syllabus that a private
teacher like me can use for electric guitar that might be accredited or
used by a student as an entry into a university or tertiary institution.
I am thinking of creating my own syllabus and if need be Ill do a course
myself. Just wondering how I can get it accredited and how. there seems
to be a lack of a system particularly here in Australia

depends on playing style i guess... here in perth we've got some
certificate courses in jazz and commercial music... as far as i know they
wouldn't look too fondly on someone trying for a degree in blues-rock,
letalone heavy metal, which somepeople might want... other than that this
might be right up your alley?
as far as i know you get into the course based soley on an audition and
something akin to a musical aptitude test... after you get the certificate
you can get into a diploma course which you can use to count towards the
first couple of years of a degree (as is my understanding... i'm asuming its
the same as the classical side of the conservatory)
hope this helps some?

You see thats why I get annoyed with the system. This artsy type attitude
towards electric modern guitar . I teach both electric and classical and both
require an amazing amount of musicianship to get advanced on. I think there is a
need for a system like AMEB for electric guitar. One that will give you a good
basis for uni study . or even something that a private teacher can use. Maybe
Ill write one thanks for the input

oh i wholeheartedly agree... but i guess most electric guitarists who want
to get into "different" stuff would probably go through the jazz/commercial
streams, purely and simply because it provides ( or at least is meant to) a
decent education on music of the last 120 years or so, and plently of music
theory, harmony , orchestration etc etc... still doesn't mean its
optimal, but i guess they wouldn't really have the numbers to make a
customized stream ( though with the electric guitar? isn't it the most
played instrument in the world or something? or not very far behind
keyboards and accoustic guitar)
to my mind though, whats the value in an accredited course? i mean you can
either play, or you cant, either understand stuff or not, can either teach,
or can't etc... i mean apart from using letters after your name to placate
parents or impress your piers, whats the point? personally i'd rather hire
someone, with a genuine pasion for their music, who's got the personal drive
to discover as music as they can about music, than someone who's been fed
stuff for 4 years that doesn't always interest them, or even have any
relevant to their field...
just out of interest, did you go through the ameb(or similar) system?
how'd you find it?
Adrian
