Turin Brakes, two of them, don't remember their names. Outstanding stuff.
ZZTop Mescalero. Great record, sounds like real rock and roll. Get it now.
Almost but not quite ready for prime time nearly mixed 7 or 8 songs from Ani
Difrancos' next one, I think coming in January. Nice stuff, she is back to
herself and and a guitar and some good songs.

I have a pre-release copy of that CD... The one I have sounds like a bunch
of outtakes or rough mixes. And they sound like a shell of their former
selves (especially Billy)... Either my copy is an early and VERY rough mix
with outtakes, or you and I have a really different take on what what this
thing sounds like. I know our buddy g-mane gets some recording and mixing
credits for that CD, but I'd REALLY like to know if what's on my CD is what
they released, because if it is, Billy and the boys been drinkin' way too
much!
IMO, and all that...

I have a regular old bought it copy. Paid full retail too.

No, this doesn't sound like that.

Vocally you mean? I don't hear that, but that could be me.

I don't know. I wrote "sounds like real rock and roll" mainly compared to
some of their more keyboard/sampler driven stuff. This record ain't so much
all that stuff. There wasn't anything wrong with that other stuff, I just
didn't like it as much as this kind of stuff.

I haven't personally heard too many early whacks that sound much like the
finished one. If you have a not done master or whatever, they probably
hadn't had it in the car yet, so it won't sound so great anywhere. At
least, in my experience that is.
It's exactly the same. Other than the MP3 audio quality issue and
there's a hidden track on the retail version. Same mix though.

Honestly, I don't own much "free" music cuz I don't really care for screwing
the artists, but this I got for free.

OK... Then, what I have must be a car copy.

Vocally, and musically... Some of the vocals are just plain bad, and some of
the guitar playing is just plain bad. You know, I do a bit of my own
recording and I leave some stuff in that I could do better, but some of the
stuff on my copy I would have let NO one ever hear. Some of the guitar parts
have SO much distortion and gain and so dang compressed that I was really
highly disappointed. Personally, I just wish they'd go back to Tres Hombres
and borrow from that. That's before BG had to be tuning down to C# sludge
and then adding all kinds of distortion pedals to get "his sound".

Right, I did notice that they didn't rely on all the sequenced parts this
time and that's what made me want to hear it. But it also seems that every
single tune has a cartoonish flavor that was cool if there were one or two,
but every song? I loaned that CD to a friend months ago so I can't just re
listen to it. he's also a very experienced guitar player (in "our" age
range) and feeels the same way I do. then again, Tres Hombres will ALways be
my favorite, so there's that!

Well, then if there were indeed early whacks, then this is one of them. I
thought the CD had potential, but not in they way it appears on this
particular CD. And the songs themselves still left me wondering why they
just don't tune back up to pitch and play. The sludge is killin me indeed!

Well, Rippo... You would know... Did I just get too picky over the years?
I don't want to slam one of the bands I grew up with and loved but... How
they left some of those solos and vocals in thete is far beyond me. Maybe I
should just get my own copy and listen just to see if I'm just not nuts.

Ok by me. I haven't heard any just plain bad guitar playing. Some major to
minor moving around that I might not do myself, but nothing overtly bad in
my opinion. Vocs all sound pretty good to me I guess.

Yes, they are quite the poke-fun-at-something every song kinda band. Have
been a long time.

I haven't listened to it with an ear to learning it yet, and I haven't sat
down with a guitar and this record yet, but I didn't really hear much of
anything way tuned down or anything. That could be because I don't care
what they tune to, I still learn it in standard.

Well, I just think that BG has mucked up his sound over the years. Whatever
it was that I used to love about BG is gone and has been gone for years.
Nothing has ever sounded better (guitarwise, and IMO) better than the first
4 or 5 albums. Les Pauls, Strats and a bunch of beautiful sounding
Marshalls, etc... With todays mastering techniques, his tone could be larger
than life with the simple rigs and tuning he used to record with is all I'm
saying.

It left after El Loco. And hasn't been seen since.

Amen. Oh, don't forget the Teles/Esquires.
