I figure he must be using the neck pickup,
with .11 or .12's....????
Ron M.
He uses the Fender Buddy Guy Signature Strat with Lace Sensors.
It's jsut about the same guitar as a Clapton Strat. I don't know what
string gauge he uses..he may go heavy and tune down ....
He used to use a Marshall half-stack, but I don't know what he
is using these days for amps
Clapton once said that Guy was the best .....for what THAT is worth.
Hendix was a big Buddy Guy booster, too. When Buddy Guy isn't showboating he
can really tear it up. When he's showboating, he's a fun guy to see. Either
way is good by me.
If you haven't heard it, find yourself a copy of Junior Wells' "Hoodoo Man
Blues". Tremendous stuff.
Dan
It was obnoxious how loud he was, but it was a great show. I guess you
can get away with that only if you're Buddy Guy. He was very gracious
to his sideman, Scott Holt. Buddy left the stage and let him lead the
band through three tunes. Good stuff.

Okay... okay... i know this. It is worth one person's opinion which
is worth exactly the same as any other person's opinion.
We should consider oursevles very lucky to be able to witness
pioneers of the electric blues king and guy at work. They're living
pieces of history, beyond music, and the concept of "best" can't apply
here.
I'll always wonder where luther allison would have taken the
electric blues had he not died young, since he had one foot in the
tradition but he didn't seem to be bound by it. He wasn't "best"
either, but he seemed to be going somewhere with blues music. I think
it would've been nice to know where that might have turned out to be.
At this point BB King and Buddy Guy are doing far too well by being
their own respective "industries" to mess with taking the music
anyplace new. As it should be, i suppose. If anybody earned it they
did. I don't like to imagine the dues they must have paid.
Now, what the heck kind of rig does buddy play through?

Jesus, are we talking about the same guy? I've seen Buddy several
times, and he has to have one of the rudest, most in your face guitar
tones I've ever heard! And I love that! He can bring it down and play
it nice and mellow, but his real thing is just cranking it up and going
for it. You're right, he plays Strats, probably his signature model,
but usually with lace sensor pickups. He used to play thru Marshalls
for a while, but every time I've seen him in the past few years he's
played thru 2 Bassman style amps. I don't think they were Fenders, but
not sure. I think they are made by Kendrick or Victoria. Whatever they
are, they are loud as hell.
As for BB being shrill?? Again, are talking about the same guy? I'll
just assume you are trying to get a rise out of people with that one!
If you get a chance to see Buddy live, check out his back up guitarist,
Scott Holt. Fantastic player. He can come close to stealing the show,
which is a hard thing to do when you're playing in Buddy Guy's band. I
think he has his own records out now, but haven't heard them. Anyway, a
great player, and a nice guy.

Well, I find that his sound is pretty bad. He ought to ditch those
lace censor pickups.
BTW, Who's Hendix?
Cheers,

His call. I guess I kind of agree.
> BTW, Who's Hendix?
Some Canadian, plays lots of Gypsy jazz, I think...
Jeez, didn't know I would get this kind of response. I've been
listening to a lot of both Guy and BB the last couple of weeks,
and this is just what I've noticed. Guy can and does produce some raunchy
stuff when it's called for, yes, but a lot of his work is also
smooth and mellow. It seems like King, on the other hand,
ALWAYS sounds so high-pitched and screechy, it sounds like
somebody whistling.
Again, listen to Guy's "Five Long Years" as an example. Then
almost anything by King. Thrill is Gone, whatever. Hell, it
sounds like the theme from Lassie....
I'm basically burned out on BB. Sure, he's a God and all
that, and I appreciate what he's done for the guitar and for
the blues, and I know he's a super-nice guy, but in the end,
it all comes down to what's coming out of your stereo
speaker. And lately, I end up taking a BB album out before
its finished. I just get tired of that "wee-wee-weeee~~~~eee"
over and over and over.
Sure, he pioneered that vibrato, and it's politically correct
to say BB has "that great vibrato," but it's not that great,
it's just a vibrato, for heaven's sakes.
Ron M.
Maybe you need a better stereo! ;-)

Sacrelige!!! You'll go to hell for that!

Is today "opposite day"? BB King has a fat, thick tone, never "screechy".
maybe you aren't sure what a fat tone or a screechy tone sounds like. Buddy
Guy has recorded some of the most harsh, screechy tones ever recorded. I
like both players, and I'm not particularly a fan of either's tone, but you
seem to have the fundamentals confused.

Are you talking about BB King or Albert King?

Your stereo is broken

Are you referring to the fact that BB frequently plays a note an octave
above the scale he's riffing in? That is a BB King "signature", but the
fact that it is a higher pitched note doesn't make it shrill.
> Sure, he pioneered that vibrato, and it's politically correct

No it isn't. It's true.
> but it's not that great,
Yes it is.
> it's just a vibrato, for heaven's sakes.
It's *the* vibrato. BB King's vibrato is "just a vibrato" like a Rolls
Royce is "just a car".

Gold Lace Sensors.

.010 gauge. He used to endorse Ernie Ball strings, but I
don't know if he still does.

That's a first.
>I figure he must be using the neck pickup,
I think he spends a lot of time in between.
Yeah, when I saw him just a few days ago he played the Les Paul the whole
time except when he broke a string. Then a roadie brought out a polka-dot
Strat, but as soon as the Les was repaired he went back to it.

If you refer to his overbending, I think it's on purpose.

You'd think after 50 years or so of playing professionally
he'd be hitting the pitch he wants...

Do you know what he thinks about you
white boy?
Something to think about
Yeah, Moik prolly knows that--he's just mocking Carl, who never
understood the over-bend thing
