First of all I think, along with the strong majority of guitar
players, that the Fender Jazzmaster is one of the most elequent
guitars ever produced. Very smooth styling without the sharp
angles.
Have you ever played one? It has a very nice cut-away on the
back which makes it very comfortable to play. And the sound...
the sound is amazing. Sure it has become some what of a fad
guitar for modern rockers but it still has a kick ass sound.
No guitar sounds as good after sending it through several layers
of distortion or reverb.
Alot of people would do alot to own one and I think that you've
really not given the guitar a good look. The tabacco sunburst
model that Swervedriver uses is very nice IMHO, the tortoise
shell pick guard is classic and would give the same effect on any
guitar. The guitar in the ad that you refer to is just as
beautiful and for sure is worth a whole lot more that your piece
of wood. What do you own anyway? or think is an attractive
guitar? By the way, I own a '66 Jazzmaster.
And I guess I can help you start to learn more about these
amazing guitars by informing you that the two dial knobs on the
top of the guitar are another set of tone and volume pots, and
that the sliding switch next to them just switches between the
two sets. The lower toggle switch that selects the pickups does
not function with the upper set of tone and volume pots tough.
By the way, since we are both fellow Pumpkins fans( I saw them
last Friday in Philly ), did you know that Billy before turning
to his now soley used Strats, used a Fender Jaguar, which looks
identical to the Jazzmaster with the exception of a smaller
pickguard that exposes the tin shielding.

I'll admit that it sounded pretty good. That about the only time I could ever
pick out and individual guitar part from a band. (It also helps that I was
only about 20 feet fom the guy too!) He was tearing into that whammy bar in a
big way.

No doubt. That's a nice looking guitar (color and all that). The guy in
Swervedriver's was kind bashed up at the bottom wasn't it? Looked like it had
a lot of wear. Just an observation.

I think the only thing Billy used at the Raleigh show was the yellow Strat that
said "I love my mom" for the first song only, and the then the silver one with
the SP logo on it.
I guess it's a matter of opinion. Some people just need to have their eyes
opened a little to see good in something.

But. The bridge/tailpeice was _awful_. The bass strings would get all
sorts of wierd double tones/buzzes/dead notes. In fact, despite all I
or my guitar tech could do, I ended up having to trade it off because I
couldn't surmount these problems.
Of course, now I wish I had it again.
