Help . . .

I have recieved as a "gift" from a friend a GK 400 RB head. The problem is
that the head makes sounds like I have a fuzz pedal in the effects loop. I
am running the GK head into a Peavey Black Widow 15" 4 ohm cab that has
always sounded great in the past when powered as a slave unit off of my
Peavey Combo 300. I have swapped cables and removed my effects processor,
hooked the cab up to the Combo just to make sure it is still functioning
correctly (it is), but still is sounds fuzzy. If I were going for a fuzz
tone this would be a great one to have, but I would like it clean. I have
tried various volume, boost (on/off and level), and master settings. I am
figuring that there is either something I don't know about this kind of amp
head, or it is broken. Either way, if some one could point me in the
direction of how to fix or get this fixed I would appreciate it. I have
tried asking the guy who gave it to me, but all he said was "it always
sounded ok to me". Personally I think he is a moron, but for free, who can
complain, I guess.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

On the back, you'll find two jacks labeled 'preamp out' and 'power amp
in.' Plug your bass into the 'power amp in' jack, and turn it all the
way up. If it sounds OK (it won't be very loud, but the TONE is what
we're looking for here) then you have a problem in the preamp...
probably a blown FET or a bad IC. If it still sounds crummy when you
plug into the 'power amp in' jack, then you probably have a half-wave
condition, most likely caused by blown output or drive transistors.
Either way, it's a job for someone with serious GK-fixing chops. Take
it to a tech.

Could it be that he is running only one 4ohm cabinet with the head, when
originally he had two (the speaker in the combo and the 15" cab.) I'm
not good with full stacks (only have one 8 ohm cab myself.) Who can
give more info?

GK400RB is rated 200 watts @ 4 ohms. Approximately 125 @ 8 ohms.

I personally think the amp is plain broken. They're tough, IME, but
they aren't indestructible (no amp is). Frankly, if my GK400RB broke,
I'd be more inclined to replace it than fix it. I've had it for 14
years and I tend to think if it breaks that's a sign that its useful
life is near its end. I'd just get another GK400RB (new) and be done
with it.

Now, I'm ethical enough not to give it somebody without telling them why
I'm getting rid of it. If they then want to fix and it works out for
them, more power to them. Not everyone shares my ethics in this area...
