I had asked for some advice on where to buy custom guitar picks a while
back. I ended up going with www.pickworld.com . I though I would share my
experience with others so you can make an educated decision on who to go
with if you're in the market for them.

I decided to go with Pick World, even though they were slightly more
expensive than some other places on the net because they offered three pick
colors per gross. I wanted to get various colors so I could decide which I
liked best, and then purchase more of the "good colors" later. So, I bought
two gross, one gross with white lettering and three colors of picks and one
gross with black lettering and three colors of picks.

Anyway, to make a long story short, the quality of the graphic application
was less than advertised. On some picks it was shifted to the right with
the last character riding on the edge of the pick. Also, on many picks,
mostly ones with white text, part of the graphic is missing as if it fell of
after being stamped. One other discrepancy with the order is that they
substituted a pick color without notifying me. This was not noted on their
website, but they say that it is being updated today with this information
(how convenient).

As for the customer service regarding the quality issues I have, to make a
long story short, here are the last two lines of the e-mail I received from
Scott Morris at Pick World (i.e. Wilmington Fibre).

"this is the best we can do"
"It's a pick not a freakin car"

I don't care that it's not a "freakin car," if I buy a candy bar and it's
rotten, I want a new bar or my money back. Pick World is not interested in
fixing my order or refunding money. Actually, I do not want money back, I
want picks that are a professional product, as advertised. Mind you, the
attitude from Scott did not come about as a result of him and I going back
and forth with e-mail and him becoming frustrated, this was his FIRST reply
to my message indicating 1) A missing pick color, 2) incorrect positioning
on about 50% of the picks, and 3) missing graphics on at least 50% of the
picks with white lettering.

I highly discourage anyone from buying picks from "Pick World" based upon my
experience with them. They have the potential to do good work, but do not
seem interested in taking the time to do so. Aside from this, they have
openly admitted to incompetence by saying "this is the best we can do." I
can't imagine anyone wanting to purchase a product from a company that
openly admits incompetence.

I apologize in advance for the crosspost to four newsgroups, but I wanted to
warn my fellow players of the poor service at Wilmington Fibre / Pick World.

The guy from Pick World had a shitty attitude about their inferior
product.

I personally can't think of anything more useless than having custom
graphics printed on a pick, and I certainly wouldn't pay anybody money
to have it done, but I think you probably deserved much better service
from a company that provided the service, since you DID want custom
picks and they did offer the service.

But seriously Bob, if you use a lot of picks, just buy them by the gross
of whatever your favorite pick is, these custom pick are going to cause
you undue stress, and over something as trivial as a pick, it's just not
worth it.

My guess is that Bob wants the custom picks for advertising his
band, in which I case I can understand his frustration at
getting shoddy mechandise.

Talk to Greg at LegendPicks.com . I have placed two orders with him and have
gotten a great product at the best prices I have seen. And no, I am not
affiliated with Legend Picks in any way, I just got excellent service and want
to send some business his way if I can.

In some ways, I agree with you. I use the picks as a promotional tool,
however. The stress isn't really a problem since I just wrote it off and am
not going to pursue it. I just wanted to make sure that others who may be
in the market for custom picks are aware of Pick World's problems.

Thanks for the input.

Unfortunately, I was about to go with Legend, but I was referred to Pick
World by someone who said they had a "professional product." Bah! The
second reason was I wanted various colors. I definitely won't be so picky
(pun intended <g>) next time with the colors, and will most likely go with
Legend.

Thanks for the heads up on getting good product from Legend.

Hello Phillip, LB and Bob,
So what does a gross of picks cost that are custom printed? Just
curious - I think it's a great way to promote a band - damn, never tried it
but glad I read your posts. What are you guys paying? Can you get a Dunlop
Tortex pick custom done (likes my Dunlops...)?

Hello Scott,
I can't comment on any pricings, but I do know that Dunlop does custom picks
as the picks Metallica use are the green .88 mm dunlop tortex picks just
customised with their own band regalia on them.
Its fun bragging to friends that you use the same model picks at Metallica
:)
If Dunlop has a site, that'd probably be your best bet in finding out how
much they charge for custom picks en masse. I hope this has helped a bit.

I belive it's $60 for 144 both sides printed. About the same as walking

I paid $45 a gross (144 picks), but I believe Legend Picks is $40 a gross.
Plus, as was my intention in posting, I would steer ANYONE away from Pick
World because of their inferior product and poor customer service.

I believe you can, but they would be significantly more expensive. Dunlop
offers custom picks for most of their picks. Check out www.jimdunlop.com

That's something I didn't mention to Scott. The $45 I paid was for single
side printing. I believe it's $40 at Legend for single sided.

With all the input regarding Legend, they seem to be a good choice next
time. They've only got three colors, black, white and tortoise shell,
right?

Given those 3 choices, I'd go with white. They're easier to find when
you drop them, and if you toss them out into the audience, you want them
to be able to find them and pick them up rather easy.

If you do the math, Dunlop is $.275 per pick the Legends price is $.277.
The difference is you get 144 for $40 with Legends and have to buy 200 from
Dunlop for $55. Good deal either way but I am such a Tortex fan that I am
going to have to get the Dunlops.....but first, I need a band...just
kidding.

Hello Pete,
I think you just did "start" a new thread about band names. Here's a
few from moi:

Bent & Amused.

Deep Sky.

Peaceful Conspiracy.

Fun Lust.

Showusyour_____!

Fitzskrubber.

Fat Willie. (I'm not kidding - I think it's a great name for a band - LV
could be on the CD jacket somewhere.)

I'm going to go down to the local club for some playing now. Hopefully my
playing will be better than my suggested names - what the heck Pete, the

Thanks Scott, that thread with my initials in it was losing steam, so I
was starting to get..., wait another band name:

"Depressed Buttons"

or that shocking new band, "The Ungroundeds"

or the band that owes their name to Rich, "Tranny Toasters", and if the
band is still going as long as the Strolling Drones they could change it
to "Granny's Toaster".

I think LV had a solution for that, spray it with that stuff we used to
spray into the room to get rid of the pot smell, Ozium. But I don't
know, that was for getting rid of cigarette smell wasn't it?

My reaction to meldew would probably be to remove the grill cloth frame
from the amp, make sure it's good & dried out and vacuum the cloth &
clean it up real good, then spray it with Ozium, and make sure the area
in the amp where it sets is cleaned out real good before putting it back
in.

No, I haven't tried it.

Okay then. Here's my first version of that tune. To
keep with the high-gain, heavy guitar theme I had to
drop the word "spray". Whenever I thought about
tunes with "tweed spray painting party" in them, they
kept sounding like something the B-52s would do.

If anyone else can come up with new verses, or
even better, a whole new tune with the "spray"
intact, please feel free to chime in. The Hack
Butchers need your help.

[Chunky, detuned rhythm guitar throughout, vamping
on the I chord (chromatic slide up into the I on the
downbeat). If the lead guitar player can handle the
harmonic complexity, shift to the V chord for the
guitar fills, otherwise just stay on I. ~100 BPM.]

"I got a amp, a lovely vintage amp
And I soldered it all over the place"

[Open position guitar fill, lots of pull-offs.]

"I took my iron, them A.G.A's was cryin'
Now it's ready for the final disgrace"

[Guitar/bass/vocal unison on "ready for the final
disgrace", then the whole band drops out for four
beats. The drums mark this off with two 1/4 note
rests and two 1/4 note flams.]

"Tweed paintin' party
My bass was gettin' farty
I can use another gain stage, lord"

[mid-boosted, 12th position guitar fill, lots of bends
with "auditorium" setting on the digital reverb]

"Tweed paintin' party
They say that I'm foolhardy
Now the resale value's hittin' the floor"

[Guitar/bass/vocal unison on "resale value's hittin'
the floor", then play guitar/bass unison descending
lick. Four dotted 1/4 notes followed by two 1/4
notes. Repeat and fade while drums and lead
guitar go nuts]

Well now, that was fun,

I've never actually had a B-52s record, but before I quit listening to
the radio, I heard "Rock Lobster" and "Love Shack" (it's a funky funky
shack) so many times that I can still hear them. If those songs enter
my head now while I'm trying to concentrate on something else, I'm going
to be pretty darn upset.

Damn! I knew that was going to happen. I was starting to forget.

But I'm listening to Capt. Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica", so I'm
safe.
