I was just wondering if there were any left handed people who play right
handed, like myself, just because it feels more comfortable.

I can't actually imagine playing left handed, it seems so weird.

Even stranger, are there any right handed people who play left handed?

Though I'm primarily a keyboardist, I can play guitar (rhythm to be exact, I
can't solo worth crap), I am a lefthander though I just became accustomed
to playing RH guitar. In fact, I never even *knew* there were LH guitars
until a little while after beginning lessons at age 10. I just thought it was
the only way.

I've been told that LH playing RH guitar is indeed the *correct* way, as the
left hand, the dominant hand, is used on the fretboard, which is
technically more complex than just strumming or picking.

Yup.. Im a leftie who plays RH, but then I do a lot of other things both ways
round so Im not a real "militant" leftie ;-> I also play a lot of keyboards
in my band so both hands get plenty of exercise. It also avoids those ugly
headstock crashes with the other guitarist when you're playing on those
delightful "postage stamp" pub stages..hmmm.

I'm a rightie who plays lefty ... (I was forced to write with My right
hand even though I'm really a lefty or at least ambi ...) and I do most
other things with My left hand ... hehehe

I hear this every day... If this were true, why wouldn't right
handers play opposite of how the do now?

where is the scientific proof that handedness isn't a 50/50 thing,
with longstanding social and religious pressures to be right handed?

As the WORLDS largest dealer of vintage left handed guitars, I have
looked for years for some evidence that it is more than the
randomness of birth that makes some of us 'wrong' handed...

Any real info out there? There are over 1.5 million left handed
guitarsists in the U.S. alone. In Japan it's gone from being frowned
apon to being 'cool'...

Yep, I'm one (I've got two friends who are also lefties who play right
handed, and one friend who's mostly a righty who plays lefthanded (honest!!))
I started playing right handed because I already played violine right handed
and it never occured to me that one could play the guitar left handed.

I'm a lefty playing righty. I didn't really have much of a choice in
it though. In college, all my guitar player friends had right hand guitars.
Couldn't afford to buy one of my own so I had to learn off what I could
borrow.

For unknown reasons though, I can only throw a frisbee with my right hand.

I'm a lefty but I play right handed guitars. There was never any doubt
that playing right would be the way to go. Let face it, when you learn to
play guitar you have to teach *both* hands to do something new. In fact, I
thought I was at an advantage because I had much better coordination
with my fretting hand.

If you play lefty guitars, that's fine. But I would consider it bad advice
to tell a new guitar player that he/she shouldn't play right handed guitars.
90+% of guitars in guitar shops are right handed models, especially the
used section.

Yes, there are plenty of us lefties out there who play a normal guitar. I
personally can't imagine why a right handed person would play the way they do.
My most dexterious hand is on the fretboard, where I think it belongs. But,
that's the way the instrument WAS when I started. There probably wasn't one
left-handed guitar in the whole town of Ashland, Kentucky when I was growing
up, so I never THOUGHT of playing otherwise. And anyhow, how many left-
handed trumpets or bassoons have you seen? Why are guitarists so particular
about this? When you start, you can't do diddly with EITHER hand, anyway...

Good thread, this...

I started out playing right handed, due to the Nazi bias of my first guitar
teacher. After about 6 months of tying my hands in knots, I turned the
guitar (ratty acoustic) upside down and suddenly everything made sense.
I play lefty now, and can't even conceive playing righty any more.

More strange things:
- I play lefty guitar and bass, and automatically transpose things visually
(if I'm copying something from a righty player, I don't have to think about
swapping things around - apparently, most people have to consciously
do this)
- I'm not particularly left handed (use a pen RH, tennis RH, basketball LH,
throw LH...)
- I play Chapman Stick RH, purely due to not being able to find a LH
Stick, and have no trouble with it

Hmm, maybe a trip to the psychologist is in order...

Not really to do with guitar playing, but here is my list of handedness:

Guitar RH Squash/Badminton/Tennis RH Pool/Snooker LH
Soccer Either foot Basketball Either Writing LH
Blackboard writing Either Throwing RH (discus LH!)
A strange combination, just to show that people are not completely one side
dominated.

I'll join you for that one, although it would appear that we are not as strange

Do you restring upside down, or just flip righty guitars over? I've only seen
a handful of folks do this without restringing. Maybe that's why it's been
like starting over completely from scratch when I've tried it for giggles.

RE: any lefties play righty?

It seems that most left handed people don't do everything with their left hand
the way that right hand people use their right hand for everything. I am a
lefty that picked up a guitar and started right handed in the 60's out of
ignorance. I had no idea that I could play left handed so I started out right
handed. I later switched to left handed in the 70's when I got serious about
playing guitar as an experiment. I had my classical guitar restrung left and
tried learning that way. It seemed my brain was furthur along than my motor
skills and I wound up getting frustrated. I tried for about 6 months and went
back to playing right handed. I've never felt like I missed anything for not
playing the same hand that I write with. I've always wondered if 'handedness'
is only determined by which hand you write with. I do things with both hands
that could be construed as being 'right handed' such as bat, use scissors,
drum, etc. I do however seem clumsier that your average joe, something which
the statistics bear out. I've heard that left handers have a 10-year less life
expectancy that right handers and most of the toll is taken from
car-accidents. Any actuarians care to confirm this statistic ?

I'm a lefty who plays right handed. Only because the only guitar I could
get my hands on when I started playing was right handed. I don't think it
really makes a difference which side you play on when you start. It's
uncomfortable and awkward either way at first.

I've felt more comfortable left-handed than right. Only thing I do left havded
is write. I do everything else right handed. However when I first picked up a
guitar I've felt more comfortable playing right handed. Because I was had a
righty guitar I just le
arned how to play right handed. I think if you write left-handed you should
play left handed because you wrist is stronger in your left hand from all the
writing and drawing you do. I can't control and coordinate my right hand as
well as my right. So to co
mpensate for this I use a lot of hammer-ons and pull offs when improvising
rather than picking each note. I guess in the end it works out because I put
more feel into my left hand so I can play more expressively I think than I
would of the other way around

This arguement keeps coming up. While it may be true that fingering the
fretboard may be more complex in terms of many more possible positions and
combinations of fingerings than the picking hand, I find that the real sound
of a guitarist comes from the picking hand. This is definately the more
expressive hand. It plays the gentle arpegios, the hard strums, the
fingerpick styles, the fast leads, etc. The left hand can fret a straight
G chord but the right hand (for normal RH players) COMPLETELY determines
what is heard (well, for the most part anyway). To me it makes sense that
this function is performed by the dominant hand. This becomes increasing
apparent the more advanced one becomes as a player due to the subtlies
involved. All of this is IMHO of course.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

I started playing left-handed before I even had a real guitar.
I used to "strum" along on a broom stick to Ricky Nelson records
back in the early '60s. Using my left hand to strum just came natural
even though I had no roll models - this was before that band with a
left-handed bass player came along.

I find it quite easy to follow what right handers play. It's like watching
myslef in a mirror. What I find difficult is having to visually transpose
chord and tab charts.
